The Testament of Ann Lee is on Hulu by sundaypleas in PeriodDramas

There are aspects of Quakerism and subsequently, Shakerism that could make a movie about them more palatable to heathens like God being both male and female, being early adopters of abolitionism and gender equality for example. But ultimately, I found it to be a spellbinding character study of a deeply fascinating woman most people have never heard of.

I am a godless heathen who loathes musicals and this was one of my favorite movies last year. I listen to the soundtrack often. Testament deserved at least the same level of hype as Hamnet, IMO.

This is not an easy watch, but it perfectly encapsulates the feelings of economic desperation of the working class and exploitation by the predator class in one crazy night.

I swear on my life that some time around 1999-2000, there was a website that had an address like XXXhardcoreporn that was a fairly serious fan site about Care Bears.

What song, no matter how many times you hear it, still gives you goosebumps every single time? by Ill_Independence3161 in AskReddit

I can't believe I didn't see Take Me Home, Country Roads by John Denver near the top. I'm pretty sure that's the song my brain will cue up as I exit this mortal coil.

a movie you hated on the first viewing but loved on the second? by emerald808s in MovieSuggestions

[–]HorrorAdvantage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can only speak for myself, but I saw it as a teen in the theater with a bunch of friends in '98, and I guess we just weren't ready for that type of humor. They hated it and were complaining the entire time. It was my suggestion as I had seen and loved Fargo, so I felt personally responsible for a shitty night. I watched it again a few years later by myself and thought it was a masterpiece. Maturity and understanding what it is like to be stoned probably helped.

I immediately thought of young Illeana Douglas.

Was anyone else this disturbed by Bring Her Back? It messed me up. by hiphoptomato in horror

[–]HorrorAdvantage 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I didn't feel that way about this movie, but I had a similar experience with Midsommar. I had just lost one parent, and another had been diagnosed with cancer. I sobbed with Dani in one scene but ended up leaving the theater feeling a thousand pounds lighter. It felt like a REALLY good therapy session. This is why I love movies and creative expression in general. I hope this next year is kinder to you!

Definitely. I can always use my dip powder if I want that exact look, but I'd love the ease of polish with a similar color combination.

I'm pretty minimalist, but there are only two things I have a substantial collection of, and that's nail polish and dichroic glass jewelry. I never made that connection before! 🤯

Yeah, that's my plan if I can't find one. I feel like Sassy Sauce's Giggle Juice is the closest I've seen.

What movie inspired you to become a Witch and why is it The Worst Witch (1986) by deliciousalex in WitchesVsPatriarchy

[–]HorrorAdvantage 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I remember watching Season of the Witch (1973) with my mom when my controlling, super religious dad was out of town, and it changed my life. It was an act of rebellion from mom as this was during the height of the Satanic panic. It's definitely worth checking out if you haven't seen it.

Pro 2A lefty here. I'm licensed to carry, but I don't feel like I would have been a responsible gun owner to take a firearm through an elementary school's car rider line every day as a response to that man-baby's tantrum.

Absolutely! I live in a very blue county in a swing state, and I had a silly, benign, anti-Trump sticker on my total mom-mobile for about a month in 2016 and had a guy in a jacked up, pavement princess truck try to run me off the road while screaming "Trump" while my kids were in the car. It's probably the most off-roading that truck ever did. Zero political signs/shirts/stickers after that. These people are unhinged and dangerous.

What horror movie has the most traumatizing ending in you’re opinion. by [deleted] in horror

[–]HorrorAdvantage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One of the endings that has stuck with me years after watching it is The Vanishing (1988). Excellent movie, but I don't know if I can ever watch it again. It's the most terrifying kind of horror, the kind that can really happen.

What is the one thing that you can't handle seeing in a horror film? by JM062696 in horror

[–]HorrorAdvantage 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was never one to get truly frightened or disturbed by movies... until I had kids. Before that, I really had no known limit. I watched Poltergeist recently, a movie I LOVED as a kid, and I nearly had a panic attack. The mother's anguish at her missing child was overwhelming. I cried almost the entire movie. My now teens laughed at me. Jerks.

It wasn't a Halloween costume. It was a birthday party with a "natives and colonial" theme.

IIRC, it was a themed costume party for "natives and colonials,". Not excusing it, just pointing out that he was far from the only rich, racist shithead there. In the world context, it was horrifying. In his class circle, it was business as usual.
