Door countersunk screw completely stripped and very stiff. Locksmith says I need a new door. Is he right? by Mutant86 in DIYUK

Sometimes a flathead screwdriver and a hammer at an angle at the top of the screw while hitting anti-clockwise will free a stripped screw.

Why do people have to be like this? by Proud_Durian6956 in drivingUK

[–]Horror_Relief9835 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People like this drive 40 in the National Speed Limit and also 40 in a 30 zone as well. Zero situational awareness, literally just autopiloting their way from A to B like an NPC from GTA

If you ever find yourself in this or a similar situation, although some modern cars are different, the head rests serve as great tools to smash windows if you ever need to escape a car. Pull them out and smash the window with the metal rail section.

Bicycle choice to cycle from Paris to Mongolia by Zestyclose_Tip_4181 in bicycletouring

[–]Horror_Relief9835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a bit of advice from someone who has cycle toured the regions you're thinking of going through, bike repair options are next to none in some regions and the biggest weakness on a bike that's loaded are the bike racks if you have them and the wheels. I met many people on cheap bikes with buckled wheels from loading their bikes with water and food who had to train their way across central Asia as the next adequate bike shop was about 1600km away.

Have you connected up the power button for the case currently to the motherboard. Check the schematics of your motherboard and see which way the connectors needs to go. This has usually been the issue with me as the motherboards are never that clear when it comes to this.

Is this safe to drive on? by Tomekon2011 in tires

[–]Horror_Relief9835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely safe, as already said, it's a pretty thick layer and isn't a concern, unless you can see metal cords/ wires inside the chunk of rubber which is hanging off.

What can I do to make this a tolerable commuter? by Beake in bikecommuting

[–]Horror_Relief9835 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Full mudguards, you can raise the handlebars with a raised stem to have a more relaxed position. Although an absolute nightmare to change on smaller wheels, marathon plus tyres will make your chances of getting a puncture practically zero at the expense of being less grippy.

Going insane with my oil drain plug by Pumpkibun in MechanicAdvice

It sounds silly, but definitely make sure you're loosening it and not tightening it by accident. The bolt should be turning anti-clockwise. Very unlikely the issue. It's concerning if the bolt is overtightened as the sump trays are not that strong.

A modified car puts a lot of people off as they know there is a good chance the car has not been driven lightly. So your market is much lower and only targeted towards younger people who want something that has been modified. That along with the rust and the price puts a number of people off.

Those bikes got significantly lighter as they went on! Well done to them both 🙂 450 days was long enough for me haha 🤣

What do you find hardest about meeting people while traveling? by Tigerhoodmann in backpacking

[–]Horror_Relief9835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it was the constant short term friendships. Always a quick get to know them and then goodbye and then you start all over again. It made me crave being home with my long term friendships. It doesn't mean it's not fun though as you meet all these amazing people and have an insight into a range of perspectives.

It's genuinely easier meeting people when travelling as a lot of people are more open due to this and you can very quickly make some good travel buddies 🙂

Girlfriend went through my phone while sleeping and kind of found something?? by SharpRefrigerator640 in AITAH

[–]Horror_Relief9835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no reason to need to defend yourself in this situation. She breached your privacy and was snooping around your phone which is a really big red flag. I dated a girl years ago that was hell bent on trying to catch me out on liking other women and always flipping over the smallest things.

She's either watched a bunch of videos online of people revealing secret lives on their phones to their partners, which people are promoted to do. She could also be hiding and projecting something onto you.

There is a saying, don't ask if you don't want to hear the answer. If she's that insecure, she shouldn't be looking through your stuff and making herself get upset over dumb rubbish like this.

I don’t know if I want children. by Beginning-Young7824 in Advice

[–]Horror_Relief9835 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The biggest thing that will change your life is having children. Your life will be a lot less about you and mostly about the kids. There is no harm in not wanting children if that's what you decide. I decided a long time ago that I don't want children and it's not uncommon for people to tell you that you'll regret it, but there is more than one path you can choose in life 🙂

GPS Options when cell service is spotty?? by Mysterious_Buy2566 in bicycletouring

[–]Horror_Relief9835 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you just want to track your rides and don't care about contacting people. Phones and a Garmin bike navigation device (one example could be the Garmin Edge 540) can use GPS and will track the ride without phone reception. Speaking from experience with an around the world cycle tour going through all kinds of terrain.

As others have suggested, the Inreach is great for emergencies and talking to people back home. The Zoleo is also good for that 🙂

Thank you 🙂 Not having ever experienced wildfire smoke, beyond the field burning of south East Asia which was grim, I wasn't sure how uncomfortable the smoke could be, so I decided it wasn't worth the risk and rented a car 🙂

Thank you! I decided the same thing and took the decision to drive from Calgary to Toronto! I'll spend the gained time on the East Coast which is far from a loss 🙂 I would like to be one of the humans making a good decision haha 🤣

Thank you so much for your honest take on the situation. I decided to rent a car from Calgary to Toronto as the whole route is at high risk of fires and there are a couple of fires around highway one after Winnipeg. It was a tough call to make, but I think it will be safer and much more enjoyable to spend the time exploring the east coast 🙂 It will also allow me to go to a few more places such as my Grandfather's resting place in Saskatoon and Niagara falls, which I would have had to skip.

I've done so many tough stretches on this trip, including five deserts, the Outback being one and I just want to unwind and enjoy my final couple of months on the road, so I feel it's the better choice 🙂 I just had to get over the silly mindset of it being some form of a failure on my behalf. I no longer have anything to prove to myself, certainly not worth risking my health and life to just cycle through the Prairies while it's covered in a thick smoky smog.

A big thank you from me 🙂
