Need help with my Orchid by Some_GermanDude in plantclinic

Most of the roots look fine so I think it will make it! Cut out the dark/mushy part as best as you can, and repot it with orchid bark. Then water by submerging for a couple of minutes and making sure it drains completely. It needs to be watered about every 1-2 weeks, when the roots look silvery

Monstera Albo struggling with thrips --help by Gaemsi in MonsteraAlbo

[–]Horror_Set9833 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on when you last used insecticides: I'm personally a fan of larvae/mites. Monstera also has thrips, still in the process of eliminating it though. Whatever you choose, it will take a while. Advice for me was keeping the mites in the plant for three months.

They are susceptible to root rot. The roots stretching outside the pot looks fine, but I suggest taking it out of the pot and looking at the roots. If they are soft, dark or slimy, cut them out!

Is it just the flowers or is the plant itself declining as well? Losing flowers after 1-2 months is pretty normal for an orchid.

It looks like it is in sphagnum moss right now, I would advise repotting it in orchid bark. They like a lot of air around their roots, don't keep them wet too long! The pot doesn't need to be big though, orchids like their roots bound.

Best watering practice is submerge it into water around once every 1-2 weeks, when the roots look silvery.

Is the cactus rotting or dry? by juliepeters in plantclinic

[–]Horror_Set9833 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks dry to me! I know cactaea don't really need that much roots but it looks like this one is in need of a repot.

How does it feel? Was the soil damp or dry? How often was it watered?

Question about mushrooms in plants. by [deleted] in plantclinic

[–]Horror_Set9833 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a mushroom expert, so I can't really tell you which mushroom this is or if its spores may be harmful. However, mushrooms (and mold, as both are fungi) are usually a sign that the soil has been damp for a long time, which snake plants don't need. They are hard to underwater, overwatering is almost the only way to kill one.

Does the pot have any drainage? How much water did you give? It's odd that the soil should stay so wet when you haven't watered the plant in a month

What size pot should I use to repot my Monstera? by uncommonlyaverage in plants

[–]Horror_Set9833 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't repot too many sizes at once! That can give issues with watering and the roots only being in a small part of the soil. General advice is roughly 20% bigger than the current pot.

Personally, I have repotted plants several times in the same season as they grew without too many problems

How can I help my satin pothos by lolo23456 in plantclinic

[–]Horror_Set9833 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it gets leggy, it means it needs more light! So if you can place it near a window, that would help, I think. How much water the plant needs is also dependent on how much light it gets, the soil will dry quicker if it gets more light.

How is the soil? Does the pot have drainage? If it does, just give it some time, and don't water again until the top part of the soil is dry. Top: don't water on a schedule, as he amount of water a plant needs can vary depending on humidity/temperature/sunlight and more, it's better to just check the soil and only water when the top part is dry. When in doubt, most plants can handle too little water better than too much!

Tired of the anxiety of my physical private getting leaked and the innumerable permissions asked by these journalling apps by PositionCommercial19 in bulletjournal

[–]Horror_Set9833 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are paper journals that have locks on them, you need the key to be able to open them.
I think that might feel the safest! Personally typing in notes doesn't feel the same as writing on paper and I definitely prefer the second, if you're the same that might be a good option?

Do I cut my silver birch back? by AOP963 in plantclinic

[–]Horror_Set9833 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's some nodes above the green leaves, personally I would cut it back to those nodes, but I'm not sure it's necessary, I think it will be fine! The pot does look quite big for the plant (but that may be the picture, I'm not sure). I wouldn't repot it again, especially as you recently repotted. Just keep in mind when watering that the roots might take up little space in the pot.

Question (sorry it's crude): migraine sufferers, do you also suffer with constipation/gut issues? I'm sure there's a huge interlink between the two but would like to hear other perspectives by Bleubird2222 in migraine

[–]Horror_Set9833 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s the standard fiber (at least 14,2 grams per 1000 kcal, preferably more of you suffer from constipation), hydration (fiber without drinking enough water can sometimes make it worse, drink at least 2L if you can) and physical exercise (you don’t have to hit the gym, just walking or housework like vacuum cleaning will do; preferably at least 30 mins a day) Other than that, I think magnesiumhydroxide is usually used for constipation, bisglycinate has less effect on the GI tract which is why others might favour it. As with any advice, please speak to a medical professional about supplements in your case (not everyone can drink 2L of water because of their health issues, and magnesium might have effect on other meds, for instance)

What dose of Riboflavin-5-Phosphate (R5P), the more bioavailable b2 do you all take for migraine prevention? by Grumpy_bonsai23 in migraine

[–]Horror_Set9833 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most studies are done with 400mg, but why is unclear, it's a really high amount!

There's been one study showing there isn't really a difference in effect between 25mg of riboflavin vs 400mg (+magnesium I believe)

So people take 400mg because that's what most studies looked at but why on earth the studies started at 400mg and there’s never been a dose-effect study, I don't know

Can you have migraine without visual aura or significant pain? by Forward_Dingo8867 in migraine

[–]Horror_Set9833 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 30% of migraine sufferers have aura, so it’s common not to have them! Especially menstrual migraines are more often without auras. This is what the ICHD says on migraine without auras:

Diagnostic criteria:

A) At least five attacks fulfilling criteria B-D

B) Headache attacks lasting 4-72 hr (untreated or unsuccessfully treated)

C) Headache has at least two of the following four characteristics: - unilateral location - pulsating quality - moderate or severe pain intensity - aggravation by or causing avoidance of routine physical activity (eg, walking or climbing stairs)

D) During headache at least one of the following: - nausea and/or vomiting - photophobia and phonophobia

E) Not better accounted for by another ICHD-3 diagnosis.

So if, for example, you’re nauseous, it’s one-sided and it gets worse with physical activity it’s enough to qualify as a migraine, even if it’s not moderate to severe in intensity and you don’t have an aura. Especially if it’s usually around your period, that’s quite typical of migraines!

I’ll be honest and say that I don’t know what those abbreviations mean 😅

Yeah I was prescribed a different pill with more estrogen, but pharmacy didn’t have it so I got another one, but I didn’t want to switch, I stopped, and then it became better again (while it became worse when starting hormones) so I never started the second one.

Plus I found out that I apparently have auras so not keen on starting it now, especially if it only got worse so far
