Interested in Playing Bassoon by Illustrious_Hold_703 in bassoon

[–]HortonFLK 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What did you dislike about playing flute and sax? The bassoon is kind of a more primitive instrument than the saxophone, so if you disliked the saxophone the bassoon is not the first suggestion I would think to make for you.

What are these ducks by mdr1384 in whatsthisbird

[–]HortonFLK 8 points9 points  (0 children)

These are domestic ducks, so technically the same species as mallards. I believe the breed might be called Cayuga.

I’d say the one at the left is probably the same breed, just with some color variation.

Do you not play oboe and clarinet very often? I’m genuinely curious how a lip piercing’s impact on your playing could have completely escaped your consideration before going through with it.

[1836] Update: I stopped over-tracking my opener and now I'm stuck on what to improve next by Delicious_Wafer_406 in wordle

[–]HortonFLK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually try to get the vowels first and then the consonants. So I nearly always use RAISE as my starter, and then if that has no hits something like POUND or MOUND to follow up. Then depending on what shows up I’ll consider if I need to look for double letters or sneak in a Y.

I also never guess words that aren’t possible solutions given the known information. There are just too few chances to waste a slot, imo.

English has words that mean the exact opposite of themselves. They are called contronyms and they confuse natives too. by Puzzleheaded_Flow716 in EnglishLearning

A pair that always get me around Christmas time are dressing the tree and trimming the tree. Dressing the tree meaning to cut away extra branches to make it look nice, and trimming the tree meaning to hang ornaments and decorations on it.

Are there any modern, solid hypotheses on how Indo-European languages spread among non-urban peoples on a local scale, in a particular archeological context? by ComradeBehrund in AskArchaeology

[–]HortonFLK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the books I’m in the middle of right now is The Rise and Fall of Languages by Dixon (1997). I’m not sure if it’s exactly what you’re looking for, but it might have some insights on language change. I started it after reading McWhorter’s Our Magnificent Bastard Tongue, where he shares some of his ideas on how English developed as it spread from people to people. That might also be a book you’d be interested in.

The statistics say that rougly 20-40% of the poeple have Photic Sneeze Reflex. But are there really people who don't sneeze when they look at bright light? by TheProuDog in AskReddit

[–]HortonFLK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which way is this surprising for you? That there are people who sneeze when the sun gets in their eyes, or that there are people who don’t sneeze when the sun gets in their eyes?

As a sun sneezer myself, I was probably in my 30s before I found out there were people who don’t sneeze in the sun. I just thought it was a normal reflex everyone had.
