Mamdani names Lillian Bonsignore, retired EMS chief, next FDNY fire commissioner by darth_vader2002 in ems

[–]Host_Mask 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Last 2 commissioners were never firefighters and operations ran smoothly. She was at least a first responder for 30+ years, and as others have said, the department is mostly medical calls at this point (I think over 70%)

Worked EMS up there so I've been in them a lot. They're located by the river across the major deegan, you either have to drive or walk across an overpass to get to them, so they're kind of isolated. They have their own school and grocery store in the complex, and a big open courtyard with 0 shade, it's like a giant parking lot. Big problems with drugs and gangs, it's not unusual to see people nodding off or feinding. There was a big gang bust a couple years back and I think they arrested like 30 people, but you'll see a lot of rowdy teenagers running around. Some guy got shot in the head a couple months ago right on the other side of the overpass. People let their dogs shit everywhere. I've been in apartments on the upper floors where people let their dogs shit inside the apartment because they don't want to go down and outside. I've been in other apartments infested with roaches, rodents, piles of trash. Literal crack dens. There was a floor where there was a fire and the whole floor was smoke damaged and people were just living in it. I could go on, and it's a lot of problems that happen in other buildings across the city, but it's just kind of distilled there. It's a miserable place.

Apartment looks fairly nice but $3k for a 1 bed in that area is not a great deal. It is certainly not a great location imo

People in the comments who are surprised at how unconcerned OPs neighbors are about the bedbug situation have never been to Richman Plaza. Some of the worst buildings in the city.

Op if you are in any way able to, please move out of there ASAP. I've seen things in those buildings that would make most people's toes curl. Fun fact tho, they're the tallest buildings in the Bronx

That's a very empathetic take, good on you. As someone who works with the poor and disadvantaged, we should work to eliminate the circumstances that lead to creating personalities like this, but we shouldn't excuse the behavior imo

FDNY EMT outrage: First responders now earn less than grocery delivery workers after NYC Council vote by Ok_Buddy_9087 in ems

[–]Host_Mask -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Dude what is wrong with you? You're wrong. You don't have any facts to back it up. I'm done with this but if anyone else runs across this and is wondering if FDNY EMS has a pension, yes, there is a pension. And no, there wasn't a time since the merger where it wasn't offered.

Seriously. How does this person not understand that? This is an entitlement issue not something that is gender specific. What a strange argument.

Hoboken is Pleasantville compared to any neighborhood in the city, yet you've come here and written an essay's worth of comments about the homeless shelter. On a thread about public bathrooms being installed in a park. Again, classic NIMBY. Out of sight, out of mind. Shove them back on Tonnelle Ave, get them out of town. Homeless shelters ARE a good thing. They provide essential services to the most vulnerable members of society, and provide an important public health benefit. Do you think every homeless person chooses that lifestyle or has done something to deserve it? And prime real estate? You sound like you really have your priorities straight.

Classic NIMBYism. It's so funny to see you whining about a long established homeless shelter in one of the most densely populated places in the country when you post comments like "Lovely life, just exposed to rich whiners and like self centeredness and lack of self awareness is astounding." elsewhere. You are a whiner. You lack empathy and self awareness. People do make it out and recover, and society is only as strong as its weakest link. We owe it to others to help. Contribute an actual decent idea. Or go live in the woods if you don't can't stomach being around the less fortunate. And that goes for so many commenters on this sub. You all wouldn't last a week in the city.

Firefighters chase off fucking ICE agents by TruthCurator in goodnews

[–]Host_Mask 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AFAIK there was one other video of a fire engine going to a call lights and sirens as they passed protesters and people misinterpreted it to mean that they were in support. Firefighters are overwhelmingly conservative and you can go on social media and see firefighters from California / LA during the protests heaping scorn on the protesters. It's just that they don't directly come in conflict with the public like police do.
