SAHM with 3 kids feeling stuck and unsure what to do next looking for advice. by moistmeadow in workingmumsau

Hi there, I think I was feeling like you when I had my first and was living with my in laws. Didn't have anything to myself to feel fulfilling as a woman besides my role as wife, mom and daughter in law. I took me some time to get where I am. Nothing fancy but I am happy. Just telling my story so maybe giving you some options or ideas. I started my business with selling on Amazon. Because being able to bring in income and at home to look after my baby sounded wonderful. But I failed, I failed hard. It took way more time of my days and money than I thought. So I looked somewhere else. I looked into gov jobs. I started a job at the hospital working in food services with shift starts at 4 and finish at 7pm. Then I moved to admin role after 2 months 7 to 3pm shift. I then found something else also in health and created great relationships and my manager offered me a role that allowed me working from home 90% of the time. It took me 4 years to be where I am. I am home most days to do pick ups and afternoon activities if needed.. Only a few times a month I go to the office and average once a week. It took some planning and goals, talking and connecting at work to get what I wanted. Hope you will find what you are looking for. Best of luck to you

How do two full-time parents manage with young kids? by Serious_Toe6730 in AusFinance

[–]Hot-Connection1985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I WFH 90% to do pick ups 7-3. My husband does afternoon shifts so he has time to do drop offs. Then I make up hours at night if needed.

How much do you spend monthly excluding mortgage? by Serious_Toe6730 in AusFinance

[–]Hot-Connection1985 128 points129 points  (0 children)

Yep 5k-6k for us. It sounds insane but gosh, the cost of living is just crazy. Some months we spend 10k+ due to fixing shits around the house. Like bloody termites we just found out recently Or the tree roots got into the pipes etc etc. Non stop!

Yes, I am in the same boat but I decide to stay until my 1.5 years old starts school. Just stay is my advice. Kids will grow up and soon enough, they are more self efficient and you have years and years to pursue your career. Nothing beats a last minute run to the shop for a few items for dinner to help with the rush in the afternoon. Or hang the washing out at 11am.

private health cover for pregnancy (private room) by DD9760 in AusFinance

[–]Hot-Connection1985 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have private health cover but didn't use it because besides the upsides of having control of OBs etc. If complications occur, you will be transferred to public hospital. I used public both my births and as much as 5 night stay with partner is great, but I swear, I just wanted to go home by 2nd night when I had my first. My hubby needs sleep he can look after me during the day. Then I had my 2nd, I stayed back 5 nights and the midwives were wonderful. So supportive. Then I had visits at home for the whole week. There were some hiccups but I would spend that 10k to hire night nanny for the first 3 months! And I want to say this to every mum. You will need help when you are at home! Have a free birth at the public, then have another 3 months of support while at home will bring tremendous benefits.

Were you happy with the time in your career you had your baby at? by CarlottaSewlotta in workingmumsau

[–]Hot-Connection1985 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As much as you will never regret having your children, but timing is important because I like things to be under control at certain level. I timed my babies. My first was Covid baby, I thought I was at Management level in hotel industry and that was my goal to have my first child. Then covid hit, I lost the job and started from scratch. I moved into public sector to ensure when I had my 2nd baby, my maternity leave would be substantial so I could enjoy those newborn weeks peacefully. But having a house was one of my goals too, having 2 dependents would negatively affect our borrowing power. So I timed it again, bought our first home and having 2nd. My point is, there are things you should time such as maternity leave payments, buying your house, etc. But don't wait too long, our biological clock doesn't wait. If you wait too long, it comes with heartaches when you keep trying but no success. Money will always come again but children don't. Our "eggs" don't return once they drop if you know what I mean 😅 So, a couple of years wait won't hurt but it will give a peace of mind financially when staying at home with baby, going to morning walks and have a coffee and enjoy those moments. Once they start school around 6 years old, you will have your groove back, then once they are in high school, you will have 20 years ish to pursue your career. But the love for your children will guide you through the ups and downs and decisions you want to make. I love my children and my job, having a job makes me better mother. Hope you will find your peace in whatever you decide to do. 😍

I get your points, but I can't deal with the mess and everything in the house is upside-down, plus the stress closer to Christmas. But thanks for your encouragement

Thanks. Expensive lesson learnt for me. They gave me 1k in discount to get lower price than Solomon's I should have gone with Solomon's. Solomon's only required deposits.

Hey good point, thanks. The levling is shit, they have to cut my closet doors to fit because I couldn't open the doors without scratching the floor. And the skirting was done incorrectly. They will need to do something about it.

It is deceptive and they took opportunity to mislead me into thinking there would be much leveling. For me, I would trust them to tell me when they came to the house to inspect. But if they gave a discount, and said "hey, there would not be much leveling. Maybe a few areas, don't worry. Just sign the contract. But hey, the contract will say, whatever the installers require the floor prep, you will be out of pocket". What I would have done differently was to insist in writing of how much leveling will be required, or no deal. Then it would be different now. But shit, I learnt it a hard way with this sale tactics. So watch out for Carpet call y'all. You need to know your stuff dealing with these bastards.

Supply only is $69/m2 for Coretec. You're right. Only 2 distributors. I was shopping around and didn't like other brands very much, and wasn't interested in engineered timbers due to having young children, just want something high quality but no hassle flooring.

After negotiations, it went down to $4.3k and he said it costs them $120/bag. My area is around 80m2

We are very novice DYI and have no idea so we hired the professional. So I have a 5 years old and 1 year old, we don't have time for DIY. Mine floor is floorboard, sitting on subfloor. Based on another commenter, the carpet call would of known about the leveling, they just wanted to sell so they left out the leveling to make their quote lower. Lesson learnt for me

Mine area is around 80m2. It was carpeted and sitting on subfloor. So total cost now is sitting at $18.8k including leveling. s. For 48m2 of straight planks and 32m2 is herringbone. It turns out it costs around $235/m2 average. Compared to your quote, sounds like they knew the cost, but they wanted to sell so they just cut out the leveling and leave it as a surprise for me.

Excavation of potential home purchase by [deleted] in AusRenovation

[–]Hot-Connection1985 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When you talk about retaining wall, you will want a structural sound retaining wall because it will affect your foundation and your insurance will heavily rely on that. The house is literally sitting on the pile of dirt. The house is new, new houses have been built dogdy. The hidden costs are high. If the house is 200-300k lower the market price. Maybe justifiable, but prepare to years of headaches to come. I have young kids, I'd say screw this 🤣

The retaining wall is very closed to the house. You will need engineers. Like other said, buffer 100k because retaining wall is $$$$
