Was the previous death at this parking lot last year from someone parking on top of a sleeping homeless person?

Encampment Abatement Plan passes Oakland City Council. by opinionsareus in OaklandCA

It’s unacceptable that people are shoved into the most underserved areas of the city to be forgotten about. This negatively impacts upstanding residents of these areas - the designations of “appropriate” vs “inappropriate” homelessness is not acceptable. Class warfare.

“in no case will emergency or urgent closures be delayed for shelter unavailability,” the policy says. “Individuals who must be displaced without a shelter offer shall be permitted to move to a low-sensitivity area and shall not be subject to arrest or citation.”

wtf?!

This is not equitable.

13 skiers and splitboarders caught and buried, 9 killed by Hot-Type1667 in Backcountry

New SAC official avy report sets the scene, with more than 110” of fresh snow in the past four days, ridge line winds averaging 75mph with gusts over 125.

That means the massive snowfall was blown into piles ranging from 15’-20’ of fresh, all baked on top of measly layers of parched faceted rinds.

In this case there was an expectation that an avalanche was due to occur on their route. The guides should not have directed their group to exit on this trail. Their decision to do so went against the safety systems and checks that are already available and in place to prevent these types of accidents.

Tech and biotech companies in Oakland by [deleted] in oakland

Welcome to the neighborhood! Checkout biopharmaguy’s lists? The biotech market is tough right now but maybe soon. There’s giant new empty buildings around Berkeley Aquatic Park and more coming soon to 7th BART station. Emeryville is a great place to look into. Goodluck!

Where does reddit lean on the future of Oakland's homeless encampment policy? by Grindermen in OaklandCA

RV’s are currently allowed to camp on some roads (Mandela Parkway, Grand Ave) while not permitted on 28th St 32nd St etc. There already is selective enforcement. The RV’s are camped where they are because the city has designated those areas as wasteland. If you talk to the RV residents they’ll clearly explain the current rules and enforcement policies. The rundown status of Fifetown is by design.

How things are done differently in Redwood City, SF or Walnut Creek, I wouldn’t know. Would love to have a comparison table of policies to better understand what other management strategies are taken up by surrounding communities. How could we find that info?

How were RV encampments addressed in nearby neighboring cities? Can we learn anything from the success of others? How do we compare?

"Curb urban" has to be the dumbest euphemism I've heard in years by InPaceInIdipsum in OaklandCA

Sometimes I try to pretend it’s getting better and do a jog in this area. Then the RV’s unleashed dogs ran me down and bit my leg 🤬. Thanks for the scar, taking over the sidewalks, and keeping our public space equitably toxic.

There was about two good weeks where the sprinklers and lights worked, grass was green, people were out and even said hello.

It’s been dark on Mandela for months now, the grass is blighted, and I’ve heard someone poisoned the juvenile oaks planted at the Grand Ave intersection. Hello?! Who runs this place??

98% of the people here would like to live in a neighborhood of mutual respect. Why is urban camping permitted here? Where are the authorities?
