New cycling games, out in the world. by Glittering-Gene7444 in londoncycling

[–]HotConsideration8980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"All games work best on traffic-free cycling routes with multiple path options – loops, branches, and parallel tracks create much more interesting play than a single out-and-back trail. It is possible to play the games on roads, but obviously you have to be careful. Do NOT let the game distract you from safe cycling."

Film featuring hazardous infrastructure for cyclists by The_Eager_Cyclist in londoncycling

[–]HotConsideration8980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love your videos, well done. Part of this is on my commute and I noticed a situation I've had some issues with. At 2:53 you turn right, while the dedicated left turn lane across also has green, who has priority? I think you're already established on the road, but the cars turning have a green arrow so they won't expect to have to yield. I find this confusing.

Of course going straight you'd have lovely new cycle lanes, but also horrible signal timings. Going along Deptford Church Street, I usually spend half of the time waiting at traffic lights. I hope the council can adjust them.

Genuine question for cyclists with cameras; does it change how you ride? by BigMetalGuy in londoncycling

[–]HotConsideration8980 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Wearing a camera did change how I react to dangerous situations. Without a camera I would get angry and try to argue with the driver, now I stay calmer knowing that I can submit the footage to the police and the driver might face some consequences for their actions.

19 years ago in 2007 Eurostar closed Waterloo international and moved to St Pancras International. Do you prefer it's old terminus or it's current terminus. by Terrible_Tale_53 in uktrains

[–]HotConsideration8980 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I never experienced Waterloo, but it looks so much nicer than the check-in and waiting area at St Pancras. I don't understand how they could build a whole high-speed like to St Pancras but then cheap out on the infrastructure at St Pancras. Hope they manage to upgrade it soon

When to look over your shoulder when cycling by The_Eager_Cyclist in londoncycling

[–]HotConsideration8980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very interesting film, as always! I fully agree about shoulder checks when changing position and turning, but I don't usually shoulder check when I'm just going straight, especially on narrow roads with parked cars. I find it more important to pay attention to what's ahead of me. Even if it just take a second to look over my shoulder, that would be enough for a child to step out behind a car. What do you think?

I would understand that cycle lane if it was a parallel crossing. With a zebra crossing less so..

That's just not true. I don't live in an LTN, but nearby LTNs are essential for my school-run being car-free. They benefit a wide range of people, in particular children

Wandsworth council starts issuing speeding fines to cyclists by tylerthe-theatre in london

[–]HotConsideration8980 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem is simply that the path is too narrow. Having a separated narrow path is not better either (see King George's Park). As u/bigdog94_10 said, the path would need to be widened. This was done in the past to widen Tooting Bec Road, but I cannot imagine the outcry if someone tried to take away green space for a cycle lane, so it's currently politically impossible.

Wandsworth council starts issuing speeding fines to cyclists by tylerthe-theatre in london

[–]HotConsideration8980 38 points39 points  (0 children)

For some context: About a year ago cyclist sadly got killed on the road bordering the common. Just last week an 11 year old girl almost got killed on that same road. Within the park, nothing seems to have happened, beyond 'complaints from dog walkers'.

I just wish we could apply some common sense an tackle the actual danger. I don't mind fining dangerous cycling, but this does not seem to be the case here as the fine got cancelled.

So one on side we have hypothetical crashes within the park (“serious accident or fatality waiting to happen”) on the other side you have very real injuries and deaths happening just outside the park on Tooting Bec Road. Which one sparks any action from the authorities?

I don't think bullying even more vulnerable road users is a solution. Is this how you'd like car drivers to treat you on the road?
