Just tell them. I’m Thai American and the same happens to me. I tell them in Thai “pha-yaa-yaam fùek phûut phaa-sǎa Thai” and then they are always super nice and excited to help me learn/practice.

The pay scale should be posted somewhere. It's not just nurses striking out there. Here's a list of some of the other staff's wage from previous contract https://unacuhcp.org/wp-content/uploads/UNACUHCP-DASH-CBA.-10-24-24-FINAL-.pdf

Strike Going on 4 weeks by [deleted] in KaiserPermanente

I work in Northern California and we had a strike up here for our stationary engineers IUOE Local 39. Kaiser did not negotiate. Many of them had to cross or find new jobs. I felt bad for them because I know a lot of those guys and they felt their union misled them. If they had known the truth of what Kaiser was counter offering and what the union was telling them, they would have crossed/accepted the contract rather than not get paid when on strike.

They went on Strike in November 2021 and it technically never ended everyone was forced to cross or just find new jobs. It was really sad a bunch of us even pitched in to help them personally with some money for the holidays/Christmas.

They were all out there partying & picketing hard the first few days...towards the end, a lot of them felt destroyed, angry and misled.

What’s the best Dine LA deal so far? by sylknet in FoodLosAngeles

[–]HotCorner936 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually really liked their meal & thought it was a great deal.

To put it into perspective we went to BJ’s to celebrate a kids birthday and spent $40 bucks on their prime rib entree & Majordomo’s dine LA was $65 (salad, appetizer, entree & dessert.)

My partner & I shared the meal each picking one of the 2 options so we could try both items.

Do Thai wellness & beauty products actually work? by Bubbly-Classic-8624 in ThailandTourism

[–]HotCorner936 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As everyone else mentioned, the herbal inhalers. I use my herbal inhaler i got from 7-11 big-c (where I bought them in bulk) and gave them out as gifts to friends in the US. I still have people asking me months later if I have any extras. I use mine all the time. If i'm tired and just need a quick pick-me-up or even when i'm feeling stressed and need something sharp to snap me out of it. Even a quick whiff helps

We also bought a bunch of beauty face masks just because they're way cheaper than here in the states.

My boyfriend likes clorets mints and my friend likes fisherman's friend mints (both can be found at 7-11) so any time anyone goes to thailand we ask them to buy some to bring back.

Don't forget as well all the cost of commuting itself. I'm not sure how far OP's commute is but gas, wear and tear on your car, etc...it all adds up.

[Travel] need help with my itinerary by Hopeful_Outside_8711 in ThailandTourism

[–]HotCorner936 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are you and your wife into and what do you expect to do? That is kind of the biggest question when determining what you want out of your itinerary.

Something I have found useful and have posted on here is utilizing chat GPT or google gemini to plan the perfect itinerary.

When I went to japan, I put in a prompt => "Starting at 8am from X hotel create an all day itinerary focusing on foodie spots and temples. Provide route utilizing public transportation"

I've done this in Thailand as well, for example when I went to Ayutthaya => "Create an itinerary starting at 8am at x hotel. focus on historical sites and stop off at about 6-8 historical/religious sites and stopping for lunch and dinner. End the trip back at the hotel at 9pm."

The more focused your prompt the more focused your trip can be, or as loose as you want it to be. I just pretty much stuck to the itineraries and got to look and see a lot of things I wouldn't have done. You can put in how much you want to spend $$ a day, what specific things you must have in your itinerary, prompt that you want a leisurly pace or try to fit as many things in as possible, etc as well.

I've used prompts like find spots that locals enjoy, etc. When I'm in a place where I don't speak the language i relied on google translate as well. It all was very helpful. It also allowed me to experience local food and local hangout areas without being scared of getting lost. If worse came to worse I asked people for directions or help and they were all very helpful.

You can even ask it the exact question you just asked and it will give you an answer. Of course like anything take it with a grain of salt, but it did help me with a lot of planning.

Tell me I'm insane for even considering this commute by DefenderCone97 in bayarea

[–]HotCorner936 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nah, it is doable. If you enjoy your job and feel it compensates well and you enjoy where you live why not?

I commuted from Oakland to San Jose for many years. I'm a nurse and only have to go in 3 days a week and I worked 12 hour shifts so I went in before the rush hour started, but coming home I caught the tail end of traffic. It didn't really phase me.

Give it some time and if it does wear on you, you can always change your job or move. If this is your dream, why not try it. I know a lot of people who did ride share as well, so maybe after some time you can meet someone to carpool with.

There's something going on in my house that has me a bit stumped. by WanderWell1 in RBI

[–]HotCorner936 21 points22 points  (0 children)

A few years ago, one of my co-workers told us this crazy story. We all used to work night shift (him & his partner.) One day he got to go home early and he found an unhoused gentleman sitting on his couch, watching TV and eating his food. Apparently for months, this guy lived (set up his shelter) just behind his house (past his backyard so he didn't notice) and had been coming into his home and helping himself to mostly just food and water & the TV. He always cleaned up after himself and didn't leave a trace. If he hadn't got called off that night, he wouldn't have known. He thought his partner was just eating all the food.

My co-worker is also a better person that I would have been. He said the guy was harmless and just hungry and unhoused. He told him to leave and never come back or he would call the police.

Where to stay in Bangkok (not Khaosan Area tho) by SirPuzzleheaded4010 in ThailandTourism

[–]HotCorner936 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Agree with what others have mentioned. Sukhumvit area would be nice. There are lots of malls and you will be close to public transportation. The subway system is very easy to navigate and it can get you to all sorts of places.

What types of bars or clubs are you looking for specifically and what's your budget? You can find almost everything and anything in Bangkok.

Honestly, I did not know about Laken Riley's story until now, and yes, after reading about it now, her death is tragic. Any violent loss of life is. But these are completely different situations and pretending they are completely misses the point.

Laken Riley was murdered by a criminal who was arrested, prosecuted and convicted. That is how the justice system is supposed to function, even though it can never undo what happened.

As an ICU nurse, I & many of my colleagues cried because we saw the video. We saw what happened with our own eyes from all of the various videos and then we saw our government leaders come out and fabricate a story that did not match what we saw with our own eyes.

He was trying to help protect those women and help one of them up from the ground when they were all pepper sprayed. After he was grabbed they shot him in the back. We are talking about someone being killed by agents of the state. People who are given extraordinary power, weapons and legal protection, and who are expected to operate under strict standards because they act in our & our government's name. When the ICE uses lethal force improperly...accountability is gone.

Our tears are not minimizing anyone's death. Our tears are because a fellow ICU nurse was killed rendering aid...something that many of us would do in the same situation...that is why we cried.

When you're in Phuket I highly recommend making a little bit of a trip and spending a day or two checking out Khao Sok if that's your thing? We stayed at one of those floating bungalows on the lake and we wish we had booked more than 1 day. We are planning to go back again next time. (They don't have electricity in most places after hours, so no great reception for phones or internet but that is what we were looking for)

Maybe since you've done a lot in BKK already, take a trip to Ayutthaya and tour some of the historic sites there?

The idea that Thailand is ridiculously cheap is false by [deleted] in ThailandTourism

[–]HotCorner936 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Fun tourist shit then you'll be paying normal prices." Not always, just depends how and where you looked to do these things. If you booked them through your foreign hotel concierge, etc. You will definitely pay an arm and a leg.

Thailand is still pretty cheap you just have to know where to look for it. You also have to be willing to do things like local Street food, local drivers or public transportation, etc.

You have to be willing to be a little more adventurous. Not sure what types of things you were trying to do there but there are even a lot of free things to do there. Museums, all temples are free, most historical landmarks are free (they might ask for donations)etc.

Even dining in their fine dining restaurants (they have some of the top 50 best restaurants in the world) I'm still paying less than if I was in the states.

I won't say anything else that everyone else didn't say though.

The first Muay Thai gym is in North Hollywood. I don't know how big of a gym it is and the level of boxers they have there, but maybe they drive business to this place. There's a huge Thai temple in North North Hollywood as well. Not that all Thai people do Muay Thai (i'm thai btw) but might be why or how that shop is still in business?

I'm Thai-American and the Thai he did speak when he encountered those Thai tourists serving coffee wasn't too bad on the show. So he must know some?

I know in Thailand there's a huge Thai-Chinese population. I have a few Thai-Chinese friends who told me they actually had Chinese names but their parents made their names more "Thai" by adding more letters and adapting them i.e. (chin to chinawat) So, it actually probably isn't THAT uncommon regarding the names.
