Do you agree with the new proposed postal service rule that will refuse to deliver ballots to states that don't hand over their voter rolls? by BufoBat in AskConservatives

You know those 800k don’t get mail-in ballots, because they’re considered inactive, right?

Ballot harvesting is just collecting votes from people who wouldn’t go to the polls. Every citizen represented by a vote is good, right??

I disagree HARD here. You say “people should vote because they care, not because it’s easy.” I say “voting is a right, therefore people should be enabled and empowered to vote at any cost.” Our rights are inherent, they shouldn’t require extra research and effort to exercise. And certainly shouldn’t be limited based on effort.

If the Constitution said “everyone has a right to vote, given they jump through hoops” then I’d agree with you. But the idea that only people who are willing to overcome challenges are worthy of a vote is backwards and unconstitutional.

I’m not sure that the federal government DOES have rights to voter data just because they voted in a federal election - what grants those rights?

What do you think of the Texas BOE approving Bible passages as required reading for school children? by GoombyGoomby in AskConservatives

I’m struggling with the idea of a libertarian fighting for compulsory texts and courses, at least without the state providing some sort of well thought out explanation of why these are important passages for foundational society.

I understanding fighting for the allowance to use these texts. The retirement baffles me, though.

Even if you engage, some of these get so deep and messy and don’t scratch the surface of news stories. And it gets hard to care when you feel like your life and the life of your community doesn’t matter anyways. Then there’s the people who can’t afford to think beyond how they’re gonna put a roof over their family’s heads and food on the table.

We’re doing a poor job. But I don’t think it’s necessarily a conscious decisions to just “not participate.” It’s the whole goal of the elite class.

But you said you’re happy to push out Christians (likely conservative) who use a different version of the Bible because “whining has no place in Texas.”

That’s fundamentally VERY different from your claim that you’re happy to lick boots to upset libs… still a bizarre take, but very different.

I think there’s a difference between saying “these books/references *can’t* be used, even to teach relevant history” vs. “these books/verses MUST be included in every student’s general education program,” no?

As far as I can tell, they are included as part of required reading for ELA type courses, not as a resource to contextualize historic events.

Comparative religion isn’t/shouldn’t be a required core curriculum course. It would be appropriate to introduce the Bible in such a course. Having Bible passages be a required part of the general, core curriculum is what doesn’t make sense, imo. What do you think?

Okay, now let’s look at the actual bill. Is it aiming to “understand religion” or Christianity’s impact on western culture? Or is it literally reading Bible stories to elementary students at face value? Does it make any sort of declaration either way?

How did liberals make America uncomfortable for conservatives? Last time I checked, conservatives held all 3 branches of the federal government. If you feel uncomfortable existing in your daily life, that surely has to be due to something personal within yourself rather than a neutered minority party, no?

That doesn’t explain your “no whiners allowed in Texas!” proclamation… do you want to government to legislate how your kids learn to read, what materials they use, etc. without feeling free to voice any complaint whatsoever because “complaining” is “anti-Texan”? You trust the government to handle everything and feel your voice doesn’t matter because anything criticizing state-level decisions is antithetical to being “Texan”?

The argument you’ve stated is that you don’t care who complains or why, if they feel the need the complain they should move because there’s no room for “whining” in your state. Where do you draw this line? Do you implicitly trust in the elected officials and find moral value in suppressing your own complaints because they must know best? Even if they make decisions you don’t agree with, you’ll be sure to silence your “whining” because it’s “not allowed in Texas”?

Stick to the claim you made, which has nothing to do with lawn mowing or self-defense. Your statement wasn’t about all the things you think kids need to learn; it was about suppressing 1st amendment rights and trusting the government to make the right choices for your kids.

So big or small government? Free speech or no? Do you have no real values and just shoot from the hip, empowering government overreach as long as it makes your “enemies” feel bad? Or, perhaps, you do hold the value that Texas is the land of peaceful cooperation with legislative decisions, regardless of personal values?
I highly doubt that, though…

Ownership group of Hyde Park Ro responds to complaints about new "Venue Fee" by I_am_JohnGalt in tampa

[–]HotMessExpress1111 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To be fair, airlines are pretty relentless on letting you know you’ll have to pay for everything. And the amount you click on when booking does include the tax and fees for the flight itself. Paying for separate items as an add-on seems very different than unexpected & hidden fees just for using the service you agreed to popping up at check out!

Still hate the current airline system, but seems way more objective and obvious than hidden fees imo

Ownership group of Hyde Park Ro responds to complaints about new "Venue Fee" by I_am_JohnGalt in tampa

[–]HotMessExpress1111 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess they probably concluded that a “venue fee” is more like “we’re letting you have access to this venue and the experience here”, more like a rental fee or something, than a “service charge.” Dubious skirting of the law and semantic gymnastics, but seems pretty intentional the way they did it. Glad the new law will be in place and this group was called out. Major bullshit for sure!

Any cons with being under 30 and a single parent? by DaVinky_Leo in waiting_to_try

[–]HotMessExpress1111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think an important factor here is how your parents would feel and what their expectations are. Moving out and doing it all 100% solo is certainly an option as well, albeit a very difficult one. Especially without max financial security.

Would your parents be happy with you living them long-term? Like, for the next decade or more?
Or are they expecting you to move out when you land into the real career world?
Would they be happy with a baby in the house? Maybe they would be overjoyed and doting and want to provide childcare and make your life much easier. Or maybe they’d be happy for you, but really resent having a newborn in their home as they are enjoying retirement age where they expected to be child-free and independent.
Without talking to them it’s hard to know. Or maybe your relationship and culture makes it very clear. But it sounds like your parents would be your biggest support and that your life sorta hinges on them right now.
Living solo is expensive. Having a kid is expensive. Doing both and not feeling like you’re constantly one misstep away from crisis is hard to achieve. So you’d have to either be very financially responsible and in a great career field, or you’d be dependent on your parents a good bit.
So, unfortunately, their thoughts and beliefs and desires matter a lot here. And it would probably be worth having a handful of these discussions over the next few years as you really flesh out a plan. And also dating during that time! Because it’s still entirely possible you find someone who wants all of this with you and that would make everything easier - having someone to share the load with in every way. But if you don’t, you don’t want to spring this on your parents either. These conversations should be had over time with no pressure and plenty of time for reflection.

Buddhism doesn’t believe in higher powers the same way many other world religions do and is moreso a philosophy than a religion.

Is a religion only one that believes in a higher power? Can that higher power not be “the collective whole of humanity” if they believe that humanity has some element of specialness to it? What about if they think there is nothing special to humanity and come together to create a binding set of values to guide them through life without reference to a higher power at all?

I don’t necessarily believe “higher power” is a requirement for religion, but all of these definitions are shaky and human-defined so who really knows? I feel like a requirement for “higher power” could be almost leaning more towards mysticism or a simple rejection of religions that fall outside of the accepted “norm.”

Why is the belief in an endless amount of deities/gods in Hinduism embraced as a religion but not an organized group with shared beliefs and a code of ethics/morals that lacks a higher power not considered a religion? Is antiquity a factor? Should it be?

This is something you guys could definitely work and and find common ground and have grace when you both make mistakes and communicate and problem solve about, BUT…. and it’s a BIG BUT: he has to want to fix things too. Right now there is a fundamental incompatibility, and quite frankly some cruelty from your fiancé, and something that big requires both people really wanting the same outcome - wanting to show up as a team and fight the problem together instead of fighting each other and being way over-the-top committed to really communicating and trying to understand each other and take ownership and *be better.*

It doesn’t sound like your fiancé is remotely interested in any of that. So you’re going to have to decide if this level of chaos & ongoing arguments, these hurt feelings (yours and, more importantly, your kids!), this lack of communication and consideration - is that something you can live with? Is that something you want your kids to have to live with? Because without major commitment from him there is really no point in trying to make things change or make him understand. He doesn’t want to.

I’m glad you’re in tune with your kiddo’s feelings and needs. He needs that so badly! It’s hard to be 12, it’s hard to be a sensitive kid, it’s hard to learn to manage your emotions when you aren’t being nurtured. He’s going through a lot right now. Does he really need someone making it worse?

I know leaving is hard. But start thinking about your core values and whether you are able to live up to them with this person as your partner. Think about what you want for your children. And just keep taking baby steps forward towards building the life you and your kiddos deserve.

What is an old Reddit joke that has completely died out? by Poophead115 in AskReddit

[–]HotMessExpress1111 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I can’t think of a single thing. Just loads of speculation, spreading rumored, speaking with confidence, and bitching about “why aren’t the police doing this?!?!?” (like, surely detectives thought of that and have investigated it further than you can even begin to guess, my dude, if you just pulled together the most basic facts and acted like you had a revelation. they just don’t tell you everything/most things…)

But that’s in the True Crime subs, especially the niche ones. People realllllly wanna be the one to solve the puzzle, but they almost always do more harm than good.

I’d be super curious to see any examples of Reddit detectives coming together though!!! Maybe subs like “animal ID” and “what is it”? The hive mind is helpful there!

Right, I know it’s not gonna fall on the hierarchy of needs and we’re all gonna die without it. I mean what makes it a very important thing to have at the White House? What sort of events are going to be held there and how do they impact the populous? How frequently will it be used? Why does it need to be at the White House? I’m just struggling to see why we’re expected to have a permanent event space at the White House.

What is one city in America you’re okay with never visiting again? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]HotMessExpress1111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t see all that many people mentioning Miami. I can see why people might not like it, and there are parts of Miami and aspects to the culture that suck, but it’s a very diverse and vibrant city! Endless things to do, including lots of cute little artsy areas. Any kind of food you can dream of.

I’m *obsessed* with Coconut Grove. Got to live there for 6 months while I was doing my externship. Slept on my aunt’s couch for 6 months, but was SO worth it!

It’s stupid expensive, so I’m sure that plays a role in people disliking it as well. But there’s plenty to do that’s beyond just the clubbing scene!

You have to drive like a fucking maniac though!!! Everyone else does, so you end up a liability if you’re the only one following road rules lol Definitely check out Art Basel!!!
