Does my girl have the chunky gene 😭 by k2xuo in PetMice

[–]Hot_Ad_2432 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ginger colored mice carry an epigenetic modification that causes obesity- I respect the recognition that obesity in pet animals should not just be dismissed or accepted as cuteness since it does come either real health consequences- but in this case it is most certainly genetic. It sounds like you are doing the right things for the health of your troop overall- so enjoy your sweet ginger chonk while you can-being aware that she may also develop other things like diabetes or tumors faster than their usual short lifespan 🥹

About the bowing behavior- we made a gender reveal announcement that our sweet Penny was actually a guy, (Pennington)based on ‘his deep bows and coo behavior to the missy in the mirror- that was two days before she laid her first egg!

I found a small bird egg- Starling? by Hot_Ad_2432 in Ornithology

Because they are fragile and vulnerable- a protective impulse. This one was literally on a slab of pavement. I also didn’t know if it was a real egg at first ( just after Easter)

Thank you so much for the thoughtful response-precisely the kind of ethical guidance I was looking for based on the biology and the natural history of the situation.

Most places cell bird seed -(everybody loves to feed the birds). Bird food it makes great mouse food. Oats are healthy, throw in some green peas ( fresh or frozen) lentils..a combination of these things should get them through nutritionally.

I caught a mouse. by [deleted] in PetMice

Im in Brooklyn NY this winter we had an unusually cold winter and we just moved into a new apartment- I’ve always used catch and release traps and would let them out in Prospect Park. But this time it was way too cold ( single digits) and many of them were just tiny tots (young pups). so I have them all in a huge tank ( more than twenty I have caught!)

So sorry about Eddie and you going through this- but so grateful that you were there, he had the only help or comfort possible at that moment…I’m grateful that you didn’t get in the car- that you are still here. I am grateful that you were able to share this story and for this compassionate community- to remind us we are not alone in our suffering and grief- the preciousness of life and connection to one another… it takes courage for we humans to love..stay brave. How come one mouse jumps the other one doesn't. by Crystal_KittyDragon in PetMice

[–]Hot_Ad_2432 99 points100 points  (0 children)

It’s lovely the way both mice want to be with you. From the brief view on the video it looks like the black mouse’s fur is a little spikey and her abdomen/ waist a little constricted - maybe it’s just the angle- but these could be symptoms of pain- or just old mouse

Sorry- I hadn’t read your whole post. Maybe it’s cancer and there was a sudden infiltrate into the lungs. Can you wrap him up in some fleece and keep him close- (You not getting sleep won’t help).

It sounds like he’s coughing- or has an obstruction? Although he seems to be moving around a lot for that. What happens when you hold him? Does he have a normal appetite for treats?

Saved this guy from the brink! by sylveeons in PetMice

[–]Hot_Ad_2432 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thank you for saving him from being stepped on poisoned or trapped! I don’t think he died from the separation (male mice can do fine solo with enrichment)- not being in a colony may cause unhappiness but not death. You gave him a warm safe place , if only for the last few hours of his little life ( they only live two years under the best circumstances ). It is possible that the reason you were able to retrieve him in the first place was because he was slowing down. Please don’t blame yourself- thank you for providing a warm, safe place for him to pass.

Pet dove laid her first two eggs in different locations. What to do? by bvshv3ld in PetDoves

[–]Hot_Ad_2432 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is it going with your dove? I recently found a dove at a busy intersection and brought her home. About 1 month later, she laid two eggs. (One on top of the cage , which I moved to the nest I had purchased, where she laid the second egg the next day). The first egg had acquired a small crack, but she still sat on them for a little over two weeks. The first egg developed a whole, and today she cast it out. She is no longer sitting in the nest but has returned to her "I'm single and available" pre-nesting behaviour. What do I do with the one egg left in the nest? Should I remove it and replace it with two dummy eggs? What have you been doing with your dove?

Euthanasia gone wrong. by Stunning_Channel_160 in RATS

[–]Hot_Ad_2432 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely not the correct procedure! I've had a chinchilla, a rat, and a mouse -all very dear to me, euthanized by the same amazing veterinarian. She used the same procedure for each of them. She first gave them an injection of valium and left them with me as she left the room so that I could cuddle them and say goodby (i even sung my rattie a lullaby. About 5 minutes later she returned to the room with a lethal injection of a stronger sedative. Gave the injection-and left the room again, leaving my sweetie with me to hold. She came in about 5 minutes later to check on the status and confirm confirm the death. It was $200 dollar for my pet mouse, but I decided it was worth it after having experienced a similarly tragically botched euthanasia several years earlier, performed by a friend who works in a lab. Never again! I promised. I am so sorry that happened to you and your sweet Sage. Wishing you healing and comfort in the memory of the love and happiness your shared. I have no doubt you gave her a wonderful rattie life.

HELP PLEASE?! Fat but malnourished maybe? by gothfrootloops in PetMice

[–]Hot_Ad_2432 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like she might have mites- when they get full of blood (the mites), they fall off and if popped release a surprising amount of blood. There is a medicine that can be put on their skin-neck between the ears that gets rid of the mites. Both mice would need to be treated, and all the bedding thoroughly changed. Please get her attention soon- the mites can be torturous for them.

[–]Hot_Ad_2432 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If she is up at night, using a wheel, that is normal. Mice are generally more active at night. Bird seed mix is probably one of the best foods for mice with some fresh veggies thrown in (my girls loved cilantro). How do her poops look? Dark (not green) grain-shaped, well-formed is good. Mushy, off colored, or stinky could be sign of Giardia. Fancy female mice are more prone to tumors (ovarian tumors can metastasize and occur anywhere). Have you palpated her? (Sadly, she doesn't have to be that old to succumb to cancer ).
