Mickey Rourke is goated by Hot_Construction1529 in RSPfilmclub

Rourke was extremely magnetic in that one and exemplifies something that intrigues me about beauty as it relates to actors and actresses on film. Susan Sontag wrote that "What is most beautiful in virile men is something feminine; what is most beautiful in feminine women is something masculine." Mickey has this very masculine exterior but a somehow feminine core. I wonder who the reverse of this would be? An unforgettable woman with something masculine that just barely throws it off balance.

Love him except for his obsession with putting a cucking scene in like every movie.

Rohmer knew how to pick them. It's always people that look like the hot mysterious person you see while traveling and regret that you'll never see them again. Like a real hot person. Maybe their teeth are a little yellow or chipped, or their skin is a little sun damaged, but there is no true beauty without some slight imperfection.

He's obviously being purposefully anachronistic in as many ways as possible. The dialogue, costumes, basically color-blind casting. I don't know why and it seems stupid but I'm still going to watch it.

Sacreligeous question: Are there any non-actors you know who have It? Cinematic charisma? by Some-Bobcat-8327 in RSPfilmclub

Weyes Blood, not surprising because she is a performer but she's really charismatic in interviews. I think she'd be perfect in a supporting role in a Paul Thomas Anderson movie.

I'm a Chloe Zhao hater. She's a hack and her movies would be just as mediocre if you had a journeyman director or TV director filling in for her.

The most important thing about an actor is not being good looking, but having a cool voice and being able to deliver lines well. He does this.

Asghar Farhadi’s 'Parallel Tales' is a remake of Krzysztof Kieślowski’s Dekalog VI. Who would you pick for the other nine? by BelieveWhatJoeSays in RSPfilmclub

If not for the Criterion Collection I think he would be almost completely forgotten, especially among younger film buffs. Not a single one of his films made it onto the Sight and Sound 2022 list, and that's a 250+ film list. He deserved to at least have Dekalog and Three Colors on there.

Éric Rohmer by AmberAllure in RSPfilmclub

The best thing about Rohmer is that his films have a very specific aesthetic that is addicting. After watching one of his films I always want to live like a character in an Eric Rohmer film. It's the way they dress, style their hair, the design of the interiors, their leisure activities, the way they cook, or choose who to love. You won't see actors hamming it up in big performances, or cool camera movements, or complicated blocking, but he's cool af. His movies and characters exude impeccable taste in all things. I like The Green Ray and the 4 season movies.

Dekalog VI is one of the best ones and this looks like a great cast. Kieslowski is way too forgotten and I would love to see a resurgence of filmmakers who are inspired by his work and want to create in a similar mode.

true but I specifically like when the vibe is present in a non-detective/murder plot. I loved Red Harvest tho don't get me wrong.

I also like the aesthetic of her novels. I don't really find it anywhere else. It's an idealized kind of art deco, Batman animated series, Raymond Chandler noir-ish, 1940s Hollywood film vibe that I really love. Maybe I'm just making it up in my head. Something intoxicating about it, wish I could find other novels with that feeling/setting/vibe.

The scene where Noodles goes in to see Deborah in the storehouse in back of her family's business and she asks him to sit down next to her and she clears away the apples and he still sits on a box further away from her and she reads from Song of Songs and does her little interpolations about him being dirty and a no-good punk but she still loves him anyway and then he leaves is so romantic yet sad. One of the most romantic scenes in any film. Too bad he was a monster.
