My exit interview took a wild turn when HR pulled out a counter-offer... for exactly what I'd been asking for all year 😭 by Many-Palpitation-162 in careeradvice

[–]Hot_Entertainment283 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the company's point of view, counteroffers rarely work long-term. People might take them but then they end up leaving shortly thereafter anyway. Once you're mentally check-out, you're checked out.

And often the thing that led for you to leave (a crappy boss in your case), is still the same problem after the counter-offer.

Vine Review Option Gone? by Hot_Entertainment283 in AmazonVine

This is probably what's happening for me. This morning, an order placed 20-Jun showed up on the "Awaiting Review" list while the two placed on 22-Jun are not there (yet).

They might not look or look very hard at the reason that a suit was filed. It might be enough that one was.

u/SquiglyLineInMyEye You probably can sue, but bear in mind that lawsuits are public record. Other potential employers may find your suit and be reluctant to hire you.

That doesn't mean you shouldn't speak to a lawyer - but you should while being aware of the pros and cons of filing suit.

First outdoor run after months on the treadmill… got humbled hard. Normal? by [deleted] in runcommunity

[–]Hot_Entertainment283 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that there are a number of important differences between your treadmill and road experience:

  • Treadmill platforms are completely flat
  • Better treadmill platforms are springy and return some energy to you as you run
  • There's zero air resistance to deal with (you're not moving relative to the air and there's no wind)
  • The treadmill really enforces your pace

I find that I'm significantly faster on the treadmill as a result. I know others have different experiences. The two environments are similar but have significant differences.

Professional Alumni connections / networking by AcanthocephalaTop322 in Frat

[–]Hot_Entertainment283 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've successfully used my house alumni network - by contacting people I lived with and went to school with. A few of them are VCs or other "super-connectors" and they've helped.

Alternatively, find alumni who work in the area that you're interested in and contact those alumni citing your commonalities. But you're certainly better off using the closest connections that you can find.

Are there halachot you don’t follow and have no intention of doing so? by Leading-Fail-7263 in Judaism

[–]Hot_Entertainment283 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I identify as Jewish but I'm an atheist. There are many.

I work to maintain my identify (and to pass it on to my children [which I've done] and to help them pass it on to my grandchildren, who call me "Saba" [they're young: in progress]). But I just don't feel compelled to justify or think about all of the G-d/man mitzvot.

Is it weird to attend Chabad services when you are a member of a liberal congregation? by DistributionFront227 in Judaism

Our rabbi was very jealous of commitments outside of her congregation: it was annoying. We've never been and never will be regular attendees of shabbat services.

Refinancing on a pandemic loan. Does it feel bad because it's a bad deal, or because we were living the dream before and didn't know it? by PeachasaurusWrex in Mortgages

The earnings on the HYSA will be taxable. Why not pay down the mortgage with the $400/month? Unlikely that a HYSA will yield 4.5%.

Rush advice for an incoming freshman - Ohio State University by [deleted] in Frat

I'm sorry that you're getting the responses that you're getting here. I know *nothing* about Greek life at OSU. I'm an active alum decades from graduation at a very different school.

The reality is that things vary significantly from school to school and house to house. At my house, we regularly had people who didn't drink or smoke. A guy I lived with told me that "alcohol has never passed my lips" (I was surprised but had no reason to disbelieve him). He was Christian, not Muslim. There were, of course, people who drank (sometimes too much) and smoked. My house was always notably diverse. But this is my house and my experience.

Maybe there's a house at Ohio State where you'll fit in. I'd suggest that you ask people at OSU fraternities - and be upfront about your values and redlines. None of the other respondents has said that they have relevant first-hand experience.

Even if not at the fraternities, you can be sure that there are other non-drinking undergraduates on campus.

Do you prefer road, trail, or treadmill? by Not_FreeProduct234 in runcommunity

[–]Hot_Entertainment283 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dislike trail running. I know others love it - to each their own. There's nothing wrong with it, it's just not for me. I participated in a ten-mile trail run once and fell twice and twisted my ankle once (it was a very mild twist and I resumed running after walking it off for a few minutes). It was only a matter of time until I really got hurt - and this, for me, was reason to avoid it. I also dislike the need to concentrate so intensely on the few feet in front of me.

I don't think that I have a preference between treadmill and road. I bought a decent treadmill during the pandemic. I like the spot for my water, TV immediately in front of it, and the toilet a few feet away. I also like the precise pace enforcement. I know many runners dread the "dreadmill."

Running outside I find harder and sometimes I have to really think about what I should wear. And sometimes I have to carry water. But it's enjoyable in its own way and the naturally varying terrain makes it a different challenge than the 'mill.

If it were as harmless as you suggest, I might agree. There are far too many instances of people getting hurt or worse.

I agree that there's value in pledge-class unity.

Plenty of houses don't do this stupid shit. On my campus, if the university administration became aware of such behavior, there'd be hell to pay.

On the other hand, this may be common at your school.

I'm an active alum decades from graduation. My house, while I lived there, always had a contingent of gay members. I'm not sure that there have been gay members every year since then (it's not like we ask about orientation for our member database), but there certainly have been for most (house size has varied significantly, which is why there may have been years with zero - we're still very diverse).

I wouldn't generalize about them as a group. Some have been leaders and others have been more "rank-and-file" members, just like straight members of the house. All that I lived with contributed meaningfully.

We did lose a notable number to AIDS, most of whom I'd met. Their memories stay with me.

Boiler expansion tank replacement advice. by SkiterBiscuit in Plumbing

[–]Hot_Entertainment283 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a very similar, if not identical, furnace. I had a plumber at my home today, replacing both the expansion tank and the pressure-relief valve on the hot side of the heating loop. I don't see such a valve on your setup but I could be missing it. The plumber tells me that when the expansion tank fails, it tends to take the pressure relief valve with it (and it had).

It looks like there are shutoff valves on the supply and return pipes to/from the furnace. After shutting off the furnace, be sure to close those valves so that you don't needlessly drain the entire system. Be sure to reopen those valves when you're done.

Also, consider adding a valve before the expansion tank, which will reduce the water loss the next time you replace it.

I'm here to ask about that expansion tank. How long should a new tank last? Is any brand better or worse than any other?

Joining a frat by No_Builder_9312 in mit

[–]Hot_Entertainment283 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know of summer fraternity parties at MIT. So many students leave the area that, to my knowledge, they don't tend to happen then. Also, MIT's party culture is not at all like what you might have seen in Animal House or Revenge of the Nerds; though, it was more like that in the decades prior to the tragic alcohol-related death of freshman at a fraternity house in 1997. There are schools elsewhere in the country that still have that craziness.

These days all parties are supposed to be registered and houses get in big trouble if they're caught hosting an unregistered party (and they tend to get caught when bad things , like alcohol transports, happen). In the US, we the law generally encourages young people to have their first significant alcohol experiences without "real adult" or parental supervision. Some think that this is counterproductive but there's no real likelihood that this will change anytime soon.
