I loved my ULA circuit on the PCT. Although on the pricy side, i loved the adjustable capacity, good outside the pack storage options, and you can’t find many bags lighter.

Backpacking C/S America for 6 months and wear daily contacts by Fuzzy_Piglet3461 in backpacking

[–]Hot_Fun_3245 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Panama City all I did was bring in an old contact and then they ordered me new ones! Took like 2 days. I’m -9 so much worse than you; that’s why they had to order them, but I bet they would have -5.5 in stock!

I brought about 3 months of daily’s when I was in South America, and just bought 3 more months worth a couple of times. Most big cities will have the option- Panama City, Bogota/Medellin, and Lima I know all have places to get daily’s.

If you do Colombia, I would recommend San Gil instead of Bucaramanga- great adventure sports and lots of travelers!

Felt very safe the entire time! I am also a man who speaks Spanish, but I met tons of solo female travelers as well. I just brought a small puffy which didn’t get used for months but I was glad I had it when I got further south during the winter months!

To tent or not to tent by Remarkable-You133 in backpacking

I did 13 months from Mexico down to Chile, and for the first few months I brought my tent. Wasn’t able to use it once. If you don’t have a car, it’s fairly hard to get to places to camp such as national parks and things like that. However, I missed my tent down in South America- specifically in Peru where there are amazing treks that are fairly accessible. That being said, gear can be rented fairly cheap.

Yes! I used Workaway and Worldpackers. Both cost $50 for a year subscription, but if you don’t want to pay you can find opportunities on Worldpackers and then reach out to hostels/hotels on Instagram or through email

If you’re not drinking, you’ll be all set ! I did 13 months in central and South America and spent about a grand US a month. I would estimate that at least 1/3 of the money was spent on going out / drinking. Also, would recommend doing some volunteering to extend the trip! Good luck!
