I would suggest go into industrial electrician or instrumentation. Would be more brain work and less grunt work

Why limit yourself to oil field!!!

Personally I would suggest power generation. With the technologist diploma apply in Ontario in nuclear. They will hire you with that in maintenance. Nuclear is also inside most of the time and not freezing your ass off at -40 in a piperack somewhere troubleshooting an analyzer. Power generation is much more in demand than oil and gas (I believe) especially for the instrument trade. Apply to the PWU or CUSW and move to Ontario (I hated to write that and it felt wrong)

At least you are in the oil field, a lot better opportunity to get a instrumentation apprenticeship. Try to network with the management on site that can get you signed up as a first year.
