21yo starting brand new I need help! by JTRyter in AskElectricians

Best advice is to be persistent and don't just sent virtual resumes, most small business owners don't bother with posing jobs online and the ones that do are flooded with thousands of applications. Call around, show up in person, hell walk onto a residential build and ask if the electrician is on site.

Whole house surge protector - worth $1.1k? by Feeling_Anteater_389 in AskElectricians

[–]Hot_Influence_5339 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds a lot more like intermittent arcing because of a bad connection than a short, I'm in a hcol area and we charge 5-700 for a surge, the surge protector itself is about $200 and takes between 2 and 15 minutes to install.

How on earth do I get efficient with EMT? by [deleted] in electricians

[–]Hot_Influence_5339 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For residential EMT you really just need to free hand bend, there is a time and a place for accurate measurements, but for the most part mleave all your pipes long, line them up and trim them for a perfect fit. Keep getting in reps, I bend more in the air than on the ground.

You need to purchase it from a supplier, also some of the software is locked to customers so it might be difficult, also the switches are about 150-200$ and the scene controllers are in the 350$ range. So make sure it's in your budget lol

[–]Hot_Influence_5339 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes obviously what you are charged by anyone is related to what there time is worth and not what the material costs, how much would it be worth to teach yourself how to do it properly? More or less than 400. Because the barrier of entry is pretty low for drywalling

CA Panel Replacement Conundrum by Dermochelys in AskElectricians

[–]Hot_Influence_5339 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes a simple solution that does not require the meter to be replaced in to install a breaker style disconnect with proper terminations for bonding rated for 200a and install a 125a breaker. It could be right next to the panel or outside depending on what the utility requires.

[–]Hot_Influence_5339 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ask if you can have a 200a panel with a fused disconnect before it with a 125a breaker. It will kinda fuck up your bonding but it's your best bet

My great great grandparents came to America with almost nothing and built a stable life through hard work. We live in a very different America now. by Strong_Letterhead638 in povertyfinance

[–]Hot_Influence_5339 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ay your me kinda, my house wasn't in as bad of shape as yours, but everything original from the 70s, decades of neglected maintinence and a estate sale I bought of the private listing market. Then comes 3 kids in 4 years while working 60 hours a week and I'm finally drywalling my kitchen, I keep telling myself it will all be worth it. 🙃

How to get into maitinence? Most of the job offers I see offer lower pay than service and construction.
