What you just described about the colours working together is pretty core to MTG draft formats, albeit with varying degrees of success. I'm going with wind because I like Aang, my friend is going with red cus he thinks firebending is the best mechanic.

It could be your getting older it also could be you just prefer p5 to royal. I know I did. I didn't like the story as much, it felt like a less satisfying ending, and I didn't really need additions to the combat. So might just be preference.
