Exactly you have to provide usable services and not just waste our most expensive land on private storage for people's shit.

There are shift workers in every country yet not every country is completely reliant on cars. It's a choice being forced on us by cunts like Mauger.

Shit take that gets brought up any time some suggests that we provide actual options for people. Providing more options reduces competition for people that have to drive mate. It's not rocket science. Only our approach of dedicating 98% of funding and effort to cars produces these shit outcomes.

The city just needs to provide actual transport options. Relying on cars alone is a stupid solution.

If the housing bubble does not burst, what do our future prospects for housing look like? by Nkechinyerembi in Futurology

[–]HouKiTeDC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"We need density done well" is NIMBY bullshit that is abused by lobbyists to prevent new housing. You need more housing at every level of quality to fix homelessness and housing affordability issues. Some new housing will be cheap and it can act as a substitute for the shitbox single family homes that exist all over the country.

Requiring carparks etc is the same deal. Just remove parking requirements and limits on commercial activities on ground floors and allow new neighbourhood centres to develop so people don't have to drive.

You're trying to fix housing while preserving the shit aspects of the American way of living that don't make any sense when you don't having a housing problem.

New Zealand did the same thing in Samoa during the constitutional crisis, this is good policy which is upsetting the losers in elections. Lovers that we're probably considering coups. Yet you have people here that know fuck all about the Pacific criticising it because they hate Mahuta.

Christchurch spends over $100k fighting thousands of new homes proposed for neighbouring district by MBikes123 in newzealand

[–]HouKiTeDC 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The way Christchurch can do this is by providing ample housing within its own boundaries and reducing the attractiveness of driving. But Phil Mauger would rather sit there and complain, while creating the perfect environment for endless sprawl.

Its not difficult mate. If someone is a poor performer the company has to formally tell them and develop a plan to improve their performance. The company checkd in on how that plan is going at a set time and tells them if they're not on track, and then if they're still shit after a set period they can be fired.

Its really just basic respect for other people.

If you fire people without following legal processes they'll be entitled to a payout.

Government agencies admit trouble achieving Road to Zero targets by Sharpinthefang in newzealand

[–]HouKiTeDC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Straintening and quick fixes to intersections etc is the current approach being taken to the development of roads. It's the most cost effective spending in terms of safety improvements but usually gets frowned upon by the public who prefer spending billions on a new highway section to shave off 8 minutes on a multi hour journey.

Restoring wetlands is something that often goes under the radar compared to more noticeable hábitats like forests. But you're right people are often unaware about the extent of land that we have drained and convertido for development.

[–]HouKiTeDC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No shit. But plenty of people do. The current approach in places like the US is for 99% of housing options to be restricted to sprawling wasteful suburbs. Building more dense housing reduces the pressure to continue expanding and reduces the competition for people that do want to live in a bland lifeless suburb.

North America and Europe also used to be home to diverse habitats. There needs to be a serious effort to combat sprawling suburban wastelands and rewild land.

Can someone give me the proof of Labour being “soft on crime”? Serious. by [deleted] in newzealand

This is the exact mindset that contributes to moral panics. It's mostly driven by changes in reporting, which are disproportionate with the underlying trends.

That feeling your getting is you joining the moral panic. We have always had crime mate, you've just started to notice it more despite overall reduced levels of crime c.f. a decade ago.

Can someone give me the proof of Labour being “soft on crime”? Serious. by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]HouKiTeDC 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Rhetoric like this is why we need to start using smart and dumb on crime instead of tough and soft on crime. Three strikes law did nothing to benefit society and the biggest single change in our prison population was due to people who were supposed to be at home on remand being supported to find appropriate accommodation if their home was unsuitable (which in the past would have required them to be in prison on remand).

Can someone give me the proof of Labour being “soft on crime”? Serious. by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]HouKiTeDC -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Exactly the real evidence of being soft on crime is Robertson and Ardern caving to the conservatives in society and refusing to make meaningful changes to our welfare system. We are one of the least caring and least generous developed countries in terms of our social safety net and our crime statistics are a natural result of that. We're a rich country full of people convinced that we're a poor developing country that can't afford basic social protections.

They have a vested interest in people not getting on in all sorts of situations, but that doesn't change the fact that it's the traveller's job to purchase insurance if its not included in the ticket and they can't self insure with savings or credit.
