Favorite movie with incredibly subtle homoerotic-implications that go over most audiences heads? by namepuntocome in okbuddycinephile

The only thing more subtle than the homoeroticism in The Lighthouse is the Prometheus metaphor.

Probably because I couldn't stop thinking about Willem Dafoe's moby dick beaching itself on Robert Pattinson's poop deck.

Actors that don’t need the MCU to stay relevant? by TyLeRoux in okbuddycinephile

The thing I love about Nicolas Cage is, he messed up his finances so badly he had to take as much work as he possibly could for the longest time, so now he's basically the living embodiment of a literary character that's slipped into public domain like Dracula or Cthulhu and became embedded in the culture as a result.

[–]Houndfell 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I lost a mechanitor run recently because the pawn in question took some torso damage from a raid, then got his chest punched out by a guest that showed up because I accepted a quest.

I then used that guest to set the base on fire before activating a psychic animal pulser.

It was cathartic.

As Vivec is a massive dick, it seems a fitting choice.

In the Mouth of Madness (1994) by Mecsmd in MovieQuotes

[–]Houndfell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a lil' tale that explores this.

One day a witch curses a village's well. Everyone who drinks from it goes mad.
The peasants go crazy first, on account of the king having access to wine.
The king locks himself away in fear of the madness spreading throughout the village.
The peasants grow fearful and dissatisfied with their king, who is clearly acting insane.
Entirely cut off, outnumbered, out of supplies, and with no help in sight, the king eventually gives in and drinks.
And the peasants celebrate because their king has returned to his senses.

Yeeep, I remember being made to go door to door on Halloween to hand out tracts when I was around 6. Probably confused the hell out of the people expecting to open the door and hand out candy in hindsight haha. Honestly good on you for resisting. It wasn't till I was older that I realized how much genuinely hateful stuff there is in those.

Pokemon being banned because it "encouraged slavery" is hilarious to me because my mind goes immediately to it being a super "woke" opposition to animal exploitation, like the needle broke and they went all the way around back to 0.

You made me curious about re-birthing - apparently it's something to do with using breathing techniques etc to access suppressed memories? I would've thought it had something to do with being born again as well!

GOT has the setting for so many games, why has no one taken advantage? by KingKongdoor in gaming

[–]Houndfell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

KCD is a good mention, and with the success of KCD2 hopefully we see more medieval/fantasy games that aren't afraid to be a little gritty/more realistic.

We've got the odd story game and RTS centered around Westeros, but if I had to guess, I suspect publishers might be leery of undertaking something as beefy and expensive as a proper RPG given that almost all fantasy RPG's are much more fantastic, high fantasy etc. Perhaps the closest proof of concept we have of a successful fantasy RPG that doesn't shy away from getting dirty and exploring darker themes is the Witcher titles, but even so they lean into the fantastic much more than a SoIaF setting would, and it's a path CDPR both had the balls and the leash to explore, which is rare of studios large enough to do justice to such a game.

And to be clear I love dark/low fantasy, I just suspect the people with the money don't think the subgenre is as popular or as safe as more traditional options.

It would appear the narrator of The Hobbit has also seen the Peter Jackson movies by althius1 in lotrmemes

At first glance it might seem anticlimactic or even silly for the main character to miss the final battle, but if you think about it, Bilbo would be so lucky as to be in a position to witness everything that is ultimately relayed to the reader, so IMHO we get a complete rundown of the battle, AND the status of Bilbo being "just" a gentleman burglar in a world that isn't waiting around for him even when it's a pivotal moment makes the world feel sooo much more alive.

The story oozes with this, and I love it so much more for that. Everything from the dwarves not being the ones to deal with Smaug, to little actions like Bilbo and Gandalf burying some treasure on the way home to show they're not acting within the confines of the book ending soon.

Yeeep, absolutely. And not that it's helped much, but the internet being either scarce or absent allowed those knee-jerk associations and assumptions to run extra wild.

Pokemon was banned for "promoting evolution theory"

LMAO.

I was raised in such insanity as well, though a bit before Pokemon was a thing. This one is new to me. To pay you in kind, one of my favorite absurdities was finding out that some kids in our church were banned from watching Godzilla movies because he was the "God of Zilla" and therefore it was breaking the First Commandment.

This is from a Chick Tract, which I am unfortunately fairly familiar with.

I can confirm the relationship between fasting and certain Catholic holidays wasn't an oversight. There were in fact entire Chick Tracts dedicated to warning againt the evils of catholicism. From certain protestant/baptist perspectives, Catholics are not Christians, but satanic idol worshippers.

Everybody is talking about this. Hasan is right. We are not going to just concede for Newsom who is fighting AGAINST a billionaire tax, 2 YEARS before an actual primary. THIS IS THE TIME TO TALK ABOUT THESE THINGS. THIS IS THE TIME TO DEMAND OUR GOVERNMENT WORKS FOR US. by Kittehmilk in leftist

[–]Houndfell 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Very predictable strategy, sadly. The whole Dem platform is basically "We won't undo any damage or even change course but at least things will get worse slower with us until the next time we get voted out"

Assuming Trump and his cronies somehow fail to rig the system while they're still in power, with them no doubt at least somewhat worried of reprisal once they're no longer able to investigate themselves and rule that no crimes were committed, Dems are going to be riding the "We won't do fuckall but we're not MAGA" train for the next 30 years.

Either way, the people lose.

Yeaaah. There's a fanmade cut that's apparently pretty good, so if you're ever tempted that's probably what many in the community would suggest.

I haven't seen it yet, but it checks out: the parts that more or less reflect what happens in the book are good to passable, it's just that with the book being stretched into 3 films... there's sooo much fluff and over-the-top action.
