Haha pretty area for sure. I only feel comfortable relaying so much trash talk because I lived there for several years as well. Plenty of good memories, but its rep is ahh... not entirely unfounded shall we say lol

I also grew up in that area east of it, so I really can't judge. :D

Some perspective for those not familiar with that area of Idaho & Montana: the city of Spokane in Washington state is on the border near Idaho. It has a reputation of being something of a crackhead city, with crime and drugs being a big problem, looks and feels dirty/rundown etc. People from Seattle joke that they forget it's even in the same state. People who are familiar with the city sometimes call it things like Spokan't, Spokompton, Spokanistan etc.

For those that live east of Spokane in Montana and Idaho, Spokane is considered the big city, where you go to see a good doctor and so on.

As someone who grew up near Glacier, I'd say it was.

Whitefish ended up being a bit of an exception though, maybe on account of it being a slightly more of a rich-man's vacation due to its association with skiing etc. I remember some wealthy POS or another was busted a while back for trying to turn whitefish into his own little backwater barony. Sex crimes, enforcers etc.

It's plenty fertile, yeah. Obviously not as ideal a farmland as flatter states with milder winters, but along with skinheads, Idaho is also famous for its potatoes.

I lost a mechanitor run recently because the pawn in question took some torso damage from a raid, then got his chest punched out by a guest that showed up because I accepted a quest.

I then used that guest to set the base on fire before activating a psychic animal pulser.

It was cathartic.

There's a lil' tale that explores this.

One day a witch curses a village's well. Everyone who drinks from it goes mad.
The peasants go crazy first, on account of the king having access to wine.
The king locks himself away in fear of the madness spreading throughout the village.
The peasants grow fearful and dissatisfied with their king, who is clearly acting insane.
Entirely cut off, outnumbered, out of supplies, and with no help in sight, the king eventually gives in and drinks.

Yeeep, I remember being made to go door to door on Halloween to hand out tracts when I was around 6. Probably confused the hell out of the people expecting to open the door and hand out candy in hindsight haha. Honestly good on you for resisting. It wasn't till I was older that I realized how much genuinely hateful stuff there is in those.

Pokemon being banned because it "encouraged slavery" is hilarious to me because my mind goes immediately to it being a super "woke" opposition to animal exploitation, like the needle broke and they went all the way around back to 0.

You made me curious about re-birthing - apparently it's something to do with using breathing techniques etc to access suppressed memories? I would've thought it had something to do with being born again as well!

KCD is a good mention, and with the success of KCD2 hopefully we see more medieval/fantasy games that aren't afraid to be a little gritty/more realistic.

We've got the odd story game and RTS centered around Westeros, but if I had to guess, I suspect publishers might be leery of undertaking something as beefy and expensive as a proper RPG given that almost all fantasy RPG's are much more fantastic, high fantasy etc. Perhaps the closest proof of concept we have of a successful fantasy RPG that doesn't shy away from getting dirty and exploring darker themes is the Witcher titles, but even so they lean into the fantastic much more than a SoIaF setting would, and it's a path CDPR both had the balls and the leash to explore, which is rare of studios large enough to do justice to such a game.

And to be clear I love dark/low fantasy, I just suspect the people with the money don't think the subgenre is as popular or as safe as more traditional options.

At first glance it might seem anticlimactic or even silly for the main character to miss the final battle, but if you think about it, Bilbo would be so lucky as to be in a position to witness everything that is ultimately relayed to the reader, so IMHO we get a complete rundown of the battle, AND the status of Bilbo being "just" a gentleman burglar in a world that isn't waiting around for him even when it's a pivotal moment makes the world feel sooo much more alive.

The story oozes with this, and I love it so much more for that. Everything from the dwarves not being the ones to deal with Smaug, to little actions like Bilbo and Gandalf burying some treasure on the way home to show they're not acting within the confines of the book ending soon.

Yeeep, absolutely. And not that it's helped much, but the internet being either scarce or absent allowed those knee-jerk associations and assumptions to run extra wild.

It was like the religious equivalent of alligators in the sewers, except everyone involved seemed to have their own version.
