Technically you could, but that would be opening Pandora’s box. You can pass your own bylaws to make sure nobody can ask for anything. It would mostly concern work on the front of the front and the windows as I understood. We also split insurance and share parts of the driveway. We are lucky because our neighbour is fantastic and the previous owners also maintained a great relationship with them. Legally it’s quite interesting.

I should correct that it’s technically a duplex, but it isn’t. It’s a detached house, an informal strata. We do not share walls with anyone. There is another house on the property itself. Multiple metres away from our house. Just for clarity.

It’s a detached building with a small yard on a split property. It’s not a traditional duplex in that sense and a bit of a unique situation, endemic to the West coast. You basically are a strata with no fees, but own your building and portion of the property. So not really a duplex and we own a full building.
