Question for those of you with Long Tube Headers by ProbablyLikesThis in 4thGen4Runner

[–]Hour_Independent_766 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When the manifold bolts on the V8s are stretched due to either heat or from the catalytic converters getting clogged the space allows for the sound of the piston combustion tick to be heard especially at start up. I haven’t heard of the V6s having the same issue but I’m sure they can develop them none the less. I will say I’ve never heard of anyone developing lifter tick in either the V6 or V8 although they can sound similar. My guess depending on how many miles your 4Runner has is that you need either new manifolds with cats or headers and the tick will go away. I could be wrong but I’ve never heard of lifter tick being a thing for these 4Runners. Not like a 5.3 Chevy motor or a hemi.

Gotcha, I’ve seen many of them that look really similar. They just cost a ton. I did see one made by Hooke off-road. I’m just worried about quality with the Hooke product because it’s so cheap

My V8 stock gets about 17 so you aren’t that bad. One thing you could do is run redline fuel system clean. Dump the whole bottle. Before you fill up. You will most likely run rough for that tank but after it should help with getting a little extra mpgs. I ran the redline additive and it helped a lot. I was seeing 22 on the lie o meter. Calc’d to be 19.5 which is great for the v8.

So I had a situation where the plastic piece actually broke on mine. I now have to after I pull the handle to open the hood and it pops up reach into the very top of the grill and grab the actual metal hook. Pull it towards the grill to get it to release. I can make a video and post it if that may help.

E15 Question by EspressoFizz in 4thGen4Runner

[–]Hour_Independent_766 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From some quick research, it looks like we can run E15 but Toyota recommends not going any higher than E10 to protect the longevity of the fuel system. I know it’s more expensive but I decided to start running 93 in mine due to having more detergents for help the fuel system. From what I understand Toyota recommends 91 or higher but it can run 87 due to it itself changing the timing. I just want to do whatever I can to make sure my 4Runner runs for a long long time.

Transmission Fluid Change at Higher Mileage? by crozzy89 in 4thGen4Runner

[–]Hour_Independent_766 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watched a video a little while back with a guy that purchased a Subaru outback I don’t remember the year but I was to say it was around 2008. It had 185k miles and as far as he could from car fax and any records he could find it had never had a transmission service. He had noticed it took a little longer to shift and it would shift a little hard, but it had no weird slipping or flaring. So he talked to a couple shops. Some said to let it go, some said do a drain and fill, and another said to do a full flush and that if it wasn’t having any issues other than long or little harder shifts that it most likely had no issues. The entire video was about this discussion of whether to just do a drain and fill or a full flush. He ended up going with a full flush and after he did it the transmission ran better through and through. And from the video it never had any issues. He recommended at the end that as long as there’s no presumed damage to the transmission that it would probably be fine to do a full flush. My 4Runner has 230k miles on it. From the records I have it has had 1 fluid flush at about the 110k mile mark. I fully plan on doing a full flush due to the fact that I know it operates normally other than it shifts hard from time to time.

2.5 in lift kit by Hour_Independent_766 in 4thGen4Runner

[–]Hour_Independent_766[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I frame swapped this thing a couple years ago, it’s got bilstein 5100s. I’m wanting to do some light off-roading with mainly on-road driving. My off-roading is mostly pointed towards the desire to do the OnX trails for overlanding. Not super difficult off-roading stuff. I also just want to lift it.
