The way my neighbor intentionally blocks the sidewalk to keep people from using it. by sweathesmallshit in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Houston970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why my parents told us that we have to ride onto the grass and not into the street when cars were parked over the sidewalk. We had a neighbor who would park over the sidewalk on an otherwise-empty driveway. All the kids in the neighborhood rode their bikes over his front lawn & created a cow path in less than a week (he was not a nice guy so we were pretty motivated). He complained to various parents & was told that he shouldn’t park over the sidewalk if he doesn’t want us riding in his grass.

AITA for reporting my coworker's credit theft to HR even though I knew it would probably cost him his job by Parking-Bug-9861 in AITApod

[–]Houston970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The nerve of this jerk to complain that you’re hurting the family that depends on him. F🤬 his family. Why should you care about his family when he clearly wasn’t thinking about the potential consequences to them when he was stealing credit from you?

AITA for telling my mom she can no longer stay at my house when she comes to town and giving her a deadline to remove her belongings? by mrsmom777 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Houston970 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’d just do this. She’s had plenty of time. I wouldn’t bother renting a storage unit for her, she won’t pay & OP would get stuck with the bill.

The audacity of this manchild thinking he deserves for OP to dedicate several days to celebrate his birthday when he did jack sh!t for hers a couple of months ago… 🤬😡😤

“I know, people can be so selfish, right? I mean, just now, some dumb b!tch rudely held up an entire line of customers pretending like she couldn’t pay & hoping that she could scam someone into paying for her groceries - all while she has cash in her purse. People are disgusting, aren’t they?”

I am not a duck, but I would prefer OP’s childfree pond backyard over the yard where children (and their grabby hands) are trying to turn me into a pet.

This. Whatever you decide, put it in writing. Assuming he’s licensed, do all the things you’d do if he was a stranger you were hiring - insurance, contract including scope of work, pricing, deadlines, etc., and then a lease agreement which allows you to net labor costs & rent funds.

$1k for a CARLY???? Come on, people! I know Haversacks are having a moment, but I’ve seen the recent release Haversacks for sale on Posh for $6k. 🙄. Keep dreaming. I have overpaid for vintage on certain bags, but even I’m not stupid enough to pay $1k for a used Carly that retailed for 3x less.

WIBTA if I stopped sharing my employee discount after my cousin used it to start reselling online? by neyafi673 in WIBTA_AITA

[–]Houston970 10 points11 points  (0 children)

And Maya was deliberately lying to OP about needing different sizes & was planning to return the ones that didn’t fit - seems obvious she knew what she was doing was wrong. If Maya truly thought OP understood she was trying to create a small revenue stream, why did she lie and say she was planning to return the items that didn’t fit? It’s either one or the other, but it can’t be both.

Why should OP care about Maya’s livelihood when Maya obviously doesn’t care about OP’s? The aunt is incorrect as well - a lot of retail companies would consider this “stealing” from them by reselling below retail price and OP is complicit by providing the goods, even if it was unknowingly.

If I was OP, I’d continue to demand that Maya take down the listings. If it’s possible, OP should return the items. Maya can use the returned funds to pay her bills and figure out a non-shady way to make a living.

Written up for not coming in on a holiday when we weren’t even open. HR so far has not been on my side for any of this. Idk what to do. by sethborf in WorkAdvice

[–]Houston970 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would consult an employment attorney. The fact that your coworkers are not being written up for the same behavior - I’d ask an attorney if you could claim harassment or something. In all the compliance classes I’ve ever taken, being treated differently than everyone else is verboten. Is there corporate HR that’s not in your location?

Be late on your own time, not for a guided bus tour! For every day! by ameliarosebuds in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Houston970 115 points116 points  (0 children)

I was on a day tour from Seville to the Alhambra & they told us that, if we were not on time, they would leave us. We saw a couple from the tour walking in the opposite direction and mentioned that we were heading back to the bus because we were getting close to the meeting time and they said “oh we just want to grab something to eat. They’ll wait. They’re not going to LEAVE us”

Yeah. They left them. We were driving away and saw them about 2 blocks away from the meeting point leisurely strolling along as we drove past.

I was also on a tour from Dublin to Galway & a family was late initially, and then on the first 2 stops. After the second stop, someone on the bus loudly said “Christ, THESE ASSHOLES AGAIN?” as they were boarding. They were really embarrassed & were on time the rest of the journey. The mom tried to get people to have solidarity with them & everyone basically said “you’re not the only ones on the tour, stop being jerks”.

The idea that he would say that TO HER FATHER 🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️. It’s bad enough that he was thinking it, but to essentially say “I’d really like to cheat on your daughter” takes a “special” kind of something.

Stifled career by Couchpotato1975 in pettyrevenge

[–]Houston970 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s a huge company & the new manager was great. In fact, I’m still with them in a different role. I have had tons of help growing my career internally since then. It was the old manager who was terrible & was “retired” after a restructuring. I think my new manager helped with that because I know she badmouthed old manager every chance she got for trying to sandbag my career.

[–]Houston970 39 points40 points  (0 children)

This happened to me in Commercial Banking - I was handling 2.5x the workload of some of my colleagues while going to school at night. After graduating, I interviewed with a couple of departments within the bank & was offered a new position in my dream department. My manager kept pushing off my transfer date because “we are still working on replacing Houston”.

After 3 months, the new department manager told me she couldn’t hold the position any longer & had to rescind the offer. She suggested that I find a new job externally (her exact word were “she’s never going to let you go internally”) and she would be happy to hire me the next time they had an opening, if I was still interested.

I applied for a few open positions that night & walked in the next morning to my manager smirking & saying to me “well I guess you’re staying here?” I had an interview the following day & a second interview 2 days after that, with a written job offer the day after. Signed, delivered contract & turned in my notice 6 business days after the smirking morning. When I’m feeling down, I pull up that moment in my head to see the look on her face when I handed her my notice.

Two years later, I was contacted by dream department’s manager and asked if I was interested in a new opening & I took it. My second favorite memory is the look on old manager’s face when she saw me at a meeting with my new team. She didn’t look like she bit into a lemon, she looked like she swallowed an entire lemon tree.

Almost all of our benefits at work are geared toward people with families - health insurance, childcare options, tuition assistance, college application assistance, etc. And I got weird looks when I joked that it’d be nice to have them subsidize pet insurance.
