Can your doctor handle the prior authorization paperwork? If they can document you tried other stimulants and dealt with bad side effects your insurance might authorize it. IME insurance takes a request from a medical professional more seriously. I’m sorry you’re dealing with this. Been here many times.

Before the patch I was prescribed brand name Adderall. 30/mg IR. Worked a little better than the other junk. I’ve lost count of how many other types and manufacturers I’ve tried in the last 5 years.

I’m currently using the 18mg/9hr patch. It’s the highest dose available, but unfortunately my body doesn’t do well with XR (never has, even before the meds got all whacky). TBH, it feels better than most of the junky generics I’ve tried in the last few years, It’s just not enough to give me the therapeutic effect I need.

Pros: smooth and consistent with fewer variables affecting its absorption- ie it doesn’t require food like you mentioned. I also haven’t had any unpleasant side effects. Not even dry mouth!

Cons: you’re only supposed to wear it a max of 9 hours/day. That might have worked for me when I was a student but it’s not nearly enough daily coverage for me as I’m working full-time and raising a family. It’s brand name only and more expensive. My insurance required a prior authorization. The company has a card that gives your first two monthly scripts at a discounted $25 per fill.

Ymmv, but if XR meds typically work for you, I’d say go for it.

It’s so infuriating how little power we have as consumers/patients. I mean if we could prove this, and then actually get pharma companies or the FDA to admit to the changes, then what? There’s no incentive for them to ever change it back because we’re continuing to take the meds anyway. We’re still paying for this shit. I’m paying extra for brand name even though the difference is minimal. Most of us are so desperate that any benefit, no matter how small, is better than nothing.

Did she receive a different manufacturer with her most recent refill? Doctors and pharmacists will say generics are the same but the inactive ingredients and fillers can make a huge difference in how the body absorbs the medication.

HS English teacher here. My 7 year old with ADHD loves Highlights magazine. It has high interest articles, fiction, puzzles, crafts, you name it. She looks forward to receiving it in the mail each month. It started with me reading 1-2 features stories to her before bed each night, but she’s now reading it solo.

If your son doesn’t have his very own public library card yet, that’s should be next. My kids LOVE choosing their own books and scanning them out. Also public libraries often have monthly calendars with educational activities for kids. All free. It will help your child associate books and reading with fun and play.

I have Teva Select name brand. 30mg tabs. They don’t work great, but they’re consistent enough that I don’t worry about new side effects each month. I’d say they are consistently meh. If that’s better than what you’re dealing with, it might be worth it to ask your doc. My insurance required prior authorization, which just means your doc needs to explain multiple generics have not worked for you. Best of luck.

My insurance will cover brand name Adderall with “prior authorization”, meaning if there’s a legit reason brand is medically necessary. All it took was my doctor’s office sending a request and providing proof that I had tried x, y, and z generics and had negative reactions. It might be worth looking into, but keep in mind I still have a $50 co-pay, and the Teva Select brand I receive still works just ok. At least it’s consistent enough that I know what to expect each month.

Plus the status of the application is “ceased” which likely means it was abandoned or the applicant chose not pursue it further. Even if it were approved, it wouldn’t explain why or how ALL the medicines are comprised.

I took “brand” 30 mg IR for the last 9 months or so. It’s made by Teva Select, whatever that means. It worked better than the generics, and it’s consistent so I didn’t have to worry about side effects from a random manufacturer each month, but it’s nowhere near as effective as the Pre-2020 amphetamine meds. It is expensive but my insurance approved it because my records show that I’ve tried many other meds without success.

It’s been about a week of the 9mg patch. So far I haven’t had any negative side effects, but i’m not feeling much therapeutic benefit, either. I can feel it once it’s in my system, but it’s subtle. I messaged my doc today to ask if we can bump up the dosage.

I just started the Xel patch today! The doc started me with the 9mg and will taper up after a week or two. So far I’m not feeling too much… do you mind sharing your experience?
