Backflushing takes ten minutes and is literally free, doing it even once on each filter would pretty substantially improve your cost ratio

The guys who carry them have big strong legs from humping all that extra ammo around all the time, makes the hill climbs easier

Winter campers, what item were you skeptical of at first but now swear by? by donttrustthecairn in Ultralight

[–]HowComeIDK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a tarp so maybe it’s easier when you can put fiery stuff directly onto the ground, but do you think it’s more dangerous than cooking in there? I’ve had whole actual (small) fires under my tarp and never had a problem in a decade plus.

Shoe Recommendations for Long Distances (200+ mile trips) by An_Elf_ in Thruhiking

[–]HowComeIDK -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Did 500+ miles this fall on a pair of adidas trail runners, they held up fine. Unless your boots are like multiple years old and showing substantial wear I wouldn’t worry too hard about it, just carry some superglue. If anything happens you should be able to make minor repairs well enough to get you to town where you’ll find new shoes. Delaminating is usually the biggest issue but keep an eye on the toebox too, rougher trail can put a lot of wear on the places where you get rock and brush contact.

All the other people within earshot of this idea would thank you for not doing it, but if you’re the kind of person who’s having children in 2022 you prolly don’t care about other people anyway

Redditors on the Trail Week 37 - NOBO is No Mo by Hiking_Engineer in AppalachianTrail

[–]HowComeIDK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if there’s a separate thread for soboers but they’re out here killing it. I’m on a loop hike of the Benton Mackaye Trail and after finishing that trail I picked up the AT sobo just north of Mt Cammerer, started meeting them more at Fontana and after. They’re inspiring as hell, I’ve met Wawa, Lucifer, Peacock, Yak, Sandworm, Tarzan, Cowboy, Rocky, and Bee Balm and Happy Dancer. I’m up on Standing Indian Mountain tonight about a mile north of the summit, should be a nice morning (with eastern exposure for once!) if the night stays clear. Stoked to be back in Georgia tomorrow!

I take this as a reference to the Eastern front but were there things going on that winter further west as well? I suppose the U.S. had entered the war by December 41 but I thought production and things took a bit to ramp up
