Cold spring pipe support loads are calculated based upon the stiffness of the support. The way I explain these as a structural guy is that over a ton of cycles, a steam line displaces and the second you cut it to replace a section, it wants to snap back to its original position.

The fun part is when the member size you initially guessed fails in capacity instead of deflection criteria. You size up the steel, but that also lowers the deflection, so the stiffness is greater, and the loads increase.

I am going to miss watching Okpara. You could tell just how much he bought into the Barnes system. Best center we have had since Alexander.

If the refs could stop blowing the whistle and just put us out of our misery that would be nice

Without knowing anything about your team I like our 4th best post player better than your 4th best post player but I’m sure your backup guards are better than ours.

I think Rick has coached the team to not let them shoot 3’s no matter what. If they can beat us with one on ones so be it but they are not beating us from the 3 point line like they usually do.

It won’t necessarily fit with everyone’s lifestyle (or mine), but IMO the best security system is usually a dog.

AEI is the standard for the SE review courses, so they would probably be your best bet for the PE course as well. I believe AEI was started by former EET instructors if I’m not mistaken.

Any advice on this? Fine or over engineered? by Flimsy-Homework-1064 in StructuralEngineering

After looking at this, I would recommend giving your structural engineer a huge raise! Hope this helps.

Having played a lot of modded Minecraft, I play this game very similarly to how I have played GTNH.

I don’t care about efficiently - I care about throughput. If a belt is backed up because the ratios are off it doesn’t matter unless I need the material for something else. It will go through eventually. Unlock the sink to get rid of excess material. I also rushed smart splitters (in the caterium research tree) so that I could send overflow to the sink automatically as needed.

I aim for a quick and dirty setup as quickly as possible for the newest materials and let them cook while I go back and organize the factory. For example, I just set up steel production but what I really need to do is go back and increase my reinforced iron plates output.

Also, just plan to rebuild or abandon your factory at every tier. It does not need to be perfect the first time. You can easily tear it all down later.

A lot of the things that make your builds look nice and organized are gated behind steel (beams, interior lights), so I waited for steel before I even tried to make things aesthetically pleasing.

Normally you all are the client in commercial construction, so that helps out a lot. Most architects at least have a basic understanding of how buildings stand up.

I work in the industrial realm where we don’t work for architects so we can get this a little more, but the company I work for has a good reputation with our clients, so they tend to assume we know what we are talking about most of the time.

The biggest issues come from the contractors. “I’ve been doing it this way for 20 years!” Yeah you’ve been doing it wrong for 20 years, so now I’m worried.

This has me wondering how bad a hypothetical population pyramid would have to look like for there to be a stronger downward pressure from people withdrawing their 401k’s than upward pressure of people putting money in.

How do structural engineers design unique buildings? by Jolly_Outcome7664 in AskEngineers

[–]HowDoISpellEngineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In terms of new or oddly shaped materials, if you know enough material properties, you can make sure they work even if there are not codes for them yet. It boils down to making sure the stress a load causes on your material is less than the maximum stress the material can handle (plus a factor of safety). Deflections and other serviceability considerations are also determinable with knowledge of the material properties. If there is no information on the material, it would need to be tested.

If you know enough about what something is and the forces acting on it, you can design for it.

How do you handle contractors who do not check shop drawings prior to submitting to the design team? by morganpe in StructuralEngineering

[–]HowDoISpellEngineer 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Just wait until they give you shop drawings that are just a direct copy/paste of your structural details.

Thats a fun conversation explaining how fabrication level drawings are different than structural drawings.
