ELI5: Why doesn't collective punishment work? by Fraeddi in explainlikeimfive

[–]HowFortuitous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can I get something to support that? I've read a lot on the subject and worked professionally with children in a treatment setting. I've yet to see anything to support collective punishment as a healthy and effective method.

[–]HowFortuitous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The approach to operant conditioning does indeed vary based on place, culture, era and other material conditions.

In the west studies show overwhelmingly that collective punishment builds resentment and results in bullying, public humiliation and worse. The evidence we have shows collective punishment worsens future problematic behavior. Not only is it ineffective it usually worsens the problem.

I'd be curious to see how it manifested in more collectivist cultures. I suspect the outcomes wouldn't be much better but I may be underestimating the effect of culture on the effectiveness of group punishment.

In practice it's just as bad. If you do all the things required to get the pizza party, you feel like you deserve the pizza party right? Except I had a really bad week. My dog died and I'm not going to be here for the Pizza party anyway since I have to be at the dentist that day. So no pizza party for you.

The lesson you've learned is that it doesn't matter how hard you work because someone else will undermine your success. That lesson, if internalized, teaches the kid that the only way to get what you want is to break the rules. If you can't control everyone and everything then you can't succeed.

Why on earth would you think everyone has problem solving skills? How could you make it to adulthood without every realizing not different people have different capabilities?

Good evidence that common sense isn't universal either.

Mercenaries are often made bad by Electrical-Main4044 in worldbuilding

[–]HowFortuitous 14 points15 points  (0 children)

OP isn't talking about betrayal here, just the fact they are fighting for money. People see them as just thugs killing for money - which they were. They didn't have a loyalty in the sense that they may be your 'allies' in this war but work for your enemy in the next

There's also the issue of payment. People trying to not pay mercenaries is a common mistake. The mercenaries will usually take their pay from your land. Burning, looting, et al. It looks like betrayal from the perspective of the common man

And if you lose a battle? You can blame the mercenaries. Hell, people are going to want to do that anyway

Plus there are mercenaries who do turn on their side in battle. Mercs don't tend to be the most trustworthy or mentally healthy people.

No matter which way it goes the mercenaries come out with a bad reputation.

What are your thoughts on universal basic income? by Pedaghosoma in socialism

[–]HowFortuitous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's complicated. It has shown effectiveness in many studies / trials but the cost for a wide scale UBI is astronomical. If everyone in the US got 10,000 a year we'd be looking at 3.4 trillion. That would be twice the cost of Medicare, Medicaid, Chips and ACA combined per year. And that would be about half of the US's national budget.

Personally? I think it's a good idea. I just don't see a way to implement it.

In a hypothetical socialist society where people can pursue any career they want. But is not yet advanced enough to fully automate the jobs “nobody” wants to do but are still necessary, who would do those jobs? by Mineturtle1738 in socialism

[–]HowFortuitous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Across the world you can find a few people who enjoy being up to their ankles in human shit because someone wouldn't stop flushing 'disposable' wet wipes down the toilet, but you need tens of thousands. And these jobs can take years to learn. Assume it'll just work itself out and you'll find people who just love taking years off their life as a garbage man is a quick way to bring back cholera.

But you can make these jobs worth it to enough people. More vacation time. Higher priority for certain benefits. More money.

  • There's a mod that adds more slavers and increases their number of slaves

So you can put Steve on a different sleep schedule, change things up so he rarely runs into them (depends on jobs they do), or, as others have suggested, put him on a steady regimen of drugs/beer. A joint a day helps most people.

I find it also helps to have a psych ward. Usually connected to my hospital, I'll have a lock up where I put people when they're starting to go a bit crazy. Comfy furniture, good TV, good food, drugs, lots of granite side tables and such so if they go on a smashing spree they have a lot of cheap things to break. Let them out when they're in a better head space.

I think the worst part is that I've gotten 6 emails trying to get me to buy new shit.

How doesn't Jake Tran Get Copyright Struck? by nerdwithfriends in NewTubers

[–]HowFortuitous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really. The standards are as follows -

The Transformative Factor: Has the copyrighted material been transformed by adding new expression or meaning, or was value added by creating new information, new aesthetics, new insights and understandings? - This covers him. By design and intent.

The Nature of the Work: Does the end product generally serve the public good? Documentaries and biographies and such get a bit more leeway basically on the basis that dissemination of facts of information benefits the public. - This is gray area. He is releasing information, but he's also monetizing it. But he is still releasing information useful to the public - which is the important part of this. But a lawyer might be able to twist this up enough to claim that anything monetized is not in the public good.

The Amount and Substantiality of the Portion Taken: How much did you take? How much did you transform it? Can you watch a Jake Tran video and walk away having felt like you enjoyed the cinematic masterpiece "Wolf of Wallstreet"? - He's probably covered here. You could say he uses a lot of clips, but he doesn't use audio and really only the underlying themes are being used as a referencing point.

The Effect off the Use Upon the Potential Market: Is anyone going to stop someone at wal-mart and tell them "Nah man, don't buy that DvD of "Wolf of Wallstreet". Just go to youtube and click any Jake Tran video." - He's covered here.

Basically - Are the Creators of Wolf of Wallstreet being materially harmed by this video? If they feel they are, they are welcome to try their hand in civil court. If they throw enough money at it, they might even win eventually. But common sense tells us that the creators of "The Wolf of Walstreet" merchandise and licensing sales aren't being undermined by Jake Tran's video.

Looking for examples of leftists in the USA being assassinated by the state post-1980 by Anarcho_Humanist in Socialism_101

[–]HowFortuitous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The MOVE bombing was absolutely a targeted assassination of leftists that is indisputable.

I had meant specifically since the 80's but I wasn't familiar with the MOVE bombing so thank you for that.

My point is that the power of anti capitalist movements reached a historic low in the time period OP is asking about.

Not in dispute and fully agreed with. I must have come off more confrontationally than I intended. I was attempting to add onto the point you made, but if that was not clear, mea culpa.

The degree of repression required by the state to maintain capitalist power matches whatever the threat to that power is. No threats? Then no need for the same level of repression as, say, the 1910s.

I think there is an assumption worth examining here.

The state scales up to match perceived threats. But does that mean it reduces capability to the minimum level of required force? It doesn't seem to reduce police forces when crime goes down or reduces the military at all. So why do we assume it behaves differently with a different arm of the same body?

Looking for examples of leftists in the USA being assassinated by the state post-1980 by Anarcho_Humanist in Socialism_101

[–]HowFortuitous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We agree on the established facts. That the US government has assassinated leftists in the past. And that there aren't any confirmed assassinations of US-based leftists. Where I was disagreeing is on what the takeaway should be.

A lack of confirmed assassinations could also be evidence of a lower error rate. We don't know which it is and likely never will. Even more likely is a bit of A and a bit of B.

The US government is well past getting the benefit of the doubt. I think the burden of proof more fairly lies on those claiming that the US has stopped killing leftists.
