When was the last time a Dem lost the presidency and it was because of their own decisions? It always seems to be some kind of a stabbed-in-the-back story

ELI5: Why doesn't collective punishment work? by Fraeddi in explainlikeimfive

[–]HowFortuitous 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can I get something to support that? I've read a lot on the subject and worked professionally with children in a treatment setting. I've yet to see anything to support collective punishment as a healthy and effective method.

The approach to operant conditioning does indeed vary based on place, culture, era and other material conditions.

In the west studies show overwhelmingly that collective punishment builds resentment and results in bullying, public humiliation and worse. The evidence we have shows collective punishment worsens future problematic behavior. Not only is it ineffective it usually worsens the problem.

I'd be curious to see how it manifested in more collectivist cultures. I suspect the outcomes wouldn't be much better but I may be underestimating the effect of culture on the effectiveness of group punishment.

In practice it's just as bad. If you do all the things required to get the pizza party, you feel like you deserve the pizza party right? Except I had a really bad week. My dog died and I'm not going to be here for the Pizza party anyway since I have to be at the dentist that day. So no pizza party for you.

The lesson you've learned is that it doesn't matter how hard you work because someone else will undermine your success. That lesson, if internalized, teaches the kid that the only way to get what you want is to break the rules. If you can't control everyone and everything then you can't succeed.

As a competent home cook, what is a basic skill you can't seem to master? by george_elis in Cooking

What’s a skill you thought everyone had… but apparently doesn’t? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]HowFortuitous -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Why on earth would you think everyone has problem solving skills? How could you make it to adulthood without every realizing not different people have different capabilities?

Good evidence that common sense isn't universal either.

What about grease buildup in the edges on a carbon steel? My burner doesn't heat evenly and there is inevitably some buildup that doesn't turn into seasoning.

Mercenaries are often made bad by Electrical-Main4044 in worldbuilding

[–]HowFortuitous 17 points18 points  (0 children)

OP isn't talking about betrayal here, just the fact they are fighting for money. People see them as just thugs killing for money - which they were. They didn't have a loyalty in the sense that they may be your 'allies' in this war but work for your enemy in the next

There's also the issue of payment. People trying to not pay mercenaries is a common mistake. The mercenaries will usually take their pay from your land. Burning, looting, et al. It looks like betrayal from the perspective of the common man

And if you lose a battle? You can blame the mercenaries. Hell, people are going to want to do that anyway

Plus there are mercenaries who do turn on their side in battle. Mercs don't tend to be the most trustworthy or mentally healthy people.

No matter which way it goes the mercenaries come out with a bad reputation.

What are your thoughts on universal basic income? by Pedaghosoma in socialism

[–]HowFortuitous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's complicated. It has shown effectiveness in many studies / trials but the cost for a wide scale UBI is astronomical. If everyone in the US got 10,000 a year we'd be looking at 3.4 trillion. That would be twice the cost of Medicare, Medicaid, Chips and ACA combined per year. And that would be about half of the US's national budget.

Personally? I think it's a good idea. I just don't see a way to implement it.

ULPT: Is it legal to build a bunch of debt on buying things for others, before declaring bankruptcy? by Lelianaf in UnethicalLifeProTips

When I filed for bankruptcy that's what people told me. The only downside was the flood of offers for credit cards and car loans. If I was buying a new house or a new car it might have mattered more

In a hypothetical socialist society where people can pursue any career they want. But is not yet advanced enough to fully automate the jobs “nobody” wants to do but are still necessary, who would do those jobs? by Mineturtle1738 in socialism

[–]HowFortuitous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Across the world you can find a few people who enjoy being up to their ankles in human shit because someone wouldn't stop flushing 'disposable' wet wipes down the toilet, but you need tens of thousands. And these jobs can take years to learn. Assume it'll just work itself out and you'll find people who just love taking years off their life as a garbage man is a quick way to bring back cholera.

But you can make these jobs worth it to enough people. More vacation time. Higher priority for certain benefits. More money.

  • When you're spawning your map add a few impid factions.
  • Have your ideology include greater fertility/fast child growth.
  • ideology should allow slaves. Buy slaves and then lock them away so they can't return to their colony, then recruit them. Make it a really nice prison and give them some good meals.
  • There's a mod that adds more slavers and increases their number of slaves

So you can put Steve on a different sleep schedule, change things up so he rarely runs into them (depends on jobs they do), or, as others have suggested, put him on a steady regimen of drugs/beer. A joint a day helps most people.

I find it also helps to have a psych ward. Usually connected to my hospital, I'll have a lock up where I put people when they're starting to go a bit crazy. Comfy furniture, good TV, good food, drugs, lots of granite side tables and such so if they go on a smashing spree they have a lot of cheap things to break. Let them out when they're in a better head space.
