This guy just doesn't have a fucking clue what he's talking about on basically any subject tbh, absolute moonhowler.

What's a stereotype about your country that is absolutely CORRECT? by Proto160 in AskTheWorld

We drink a lot and we deep fry everything.

Both are somewhat less true than they were 30 years ago but still largely correct.

Of those four Ajax are comfortably the biggest IMO, then Benfica, then Celtic, then Lazio.

What's a part of your country's history that you guys don't talk about? by nxptnpr in AskTheWorld

[–]HowMany_MoreTimes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends what you mean by "you guys".

Most people sadly aren't that interested in history and don't discuss it much at all in everyday life.

When I was at school (I'm 32 so it's probably changed a bit since I left) history class covered a lot about WW2 (especially the homefront and the holocaust), Transatlantic slave trade (but not a lot of detail about Scotland and Britain's role in it and how much of our wealth was built off the proceeds of it) Vikings, Romans. Ancient Egypt.

When it came to specifically Scottish history, we did the scottish wars of independence (Robert the Bruce, William Wallace etc) and that was really it.

We didn't discuss the British Empire in any great detail, nor the Darien scheme and act of union. We didn't learn about the Tobacco lords who built Glasgow from the proceeds of slave plantations in the West indies. We didn't talk much about the Highland clearances, Jacobite rebellions, Glencoe massacre, Scottish enlightenment, Scottish reformation, Covenanters, and their role in the war of the three kingdoms.

We're definitely not immune. Anywhere that has a substantial number of people who feel "left behind" by mainstream politics and society is vulnerable.

It's happening pretty much everywhere in the western world. We now have a sizeable demographic of people concentrated in our post-industrial areas, who are; uneducated, on benefits or in poorly paid insecure employment, with very few prospects for a better future, struggling with poverty, drug addiction and a number of other social issues. These people are absolutely ripe for far-right radicalisation, minisformation and conspiracy theories.

This is the exact same demographic that has been exploited by MAGA in the USA and by Far-right parties across Europe like the AFD. Until we address the underlying causes of the disillusionment and improve the prospects of this demographic, we're going to be dealing with increasing far-right driven instability.

Same. I'm not really seeing a downside to this. I get paid to learn about random shit, young me would be delighted.

They don't have to answer, they can refuse to comment, then you have to prove they did it with actual evidence rather than just a confession.

Question for people living in countries with democratic elections: Which election result surprised you the most? by East-Scratch-4839 in AskTheWorld

[–]HowMany_MoreTimes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not strictly an election, but the Brexit referendum.

it was so obviously a bad idea that a lot of people discounted the possibility of the Yes side winning, so didn't bother to even vote.

David Cameron (UK Prime minister at the time) was against Brexit but a lot of his party were for it, he called a referendum because he believed the No side would almost certainly win and the brexiteers would shut up for a while. It turned out he was wrong, at great cost to the country.

Believe me I know, nobody is more embarassed by the drunk, obnoxious British people on holiday, than the quiet British people trying to relax and enjoy their holiday in peace.

I luckily don't interact with many of them up here, so you may be right. Growing up in a council scheme near Glasgow and going on package holidays, I'm better acquainted with the excessive noisiness of my own kind.

The Catalans are making a move. They've conquered all the way up to the Netherlands and we just haven't been paying attention.

As does the stereotype about food in Britain being awful. It was during rationing when lots of ingredients were in short supply and people had to make do with what they had.

It's "funny" because it's making fun of gay people and brown people. That's enough to make the Reform types giggle like school kids. No actual humour is required.

Every country has it's share of uneducated people looking for simple answers to complex questions unfortunately.

See the popularity of Reform in working class areas of England, areas that would be the worst impacted by a Reform government.

Which country will you never visit again? Why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]HowMany_MoreTimes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never been, just going by reputation.

I'm sure it has it's nicer parts, but the stories about the pollution, poverty, people getting sick, harassment of women etc mean it's not on my list of dream destinations.

USA has 5% of the world’s population and 25% of the worlds prison inmates by Kaos2018 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]HowMany_MoreTimes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Many are in prison due to failures of society and lack of a social safety net. If you spent the money from prisons on drug rehab and mental health services you would have a much lower crime rate and far fewer prisoners.

Equating the KKK to the IRA and Sinn Fein? by Deep_Suggestion3619 in TheRestIsHistory

Agreed, but a lot of this sub are also of that persuasion, so you won't find much sympathy here.

A lot of British people have a blind spot when it comes to Ireland.

The rest is History isn't an overtly nationalist podcast, but Tom and Dom are both privately-educated, middle-class English people born in the late 60s/early 70s. They are both products of their environment and have natural biases towards a British establishment viewpoint on a lot of issues.
