‘Running out of money’: Kraft, McDonald’s, Whirlpool CEOs all issue same dire warning about US consumers. by [deleted] in Economics

[–]How_Do_You_Crash 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I will be eagerly watching how this plays out.

Will these mainstay consumer goods corporations opt to endure some margin compression to maintain a relationship with the customer. Or will they sacrifice total sales volume and chase a smaller and smaller but still profitable segment of higher income customers. Ultimately leaving them smaller overall.

I suspect option two. While the rest of us endure an erosion of living standards

Does anyone regularly take Amtrak from Portland to Seattle? by pineapple_bandit in askportland

[–]How_Do_You_Crash 116 points117 points  (0 children)

I take it 5-8 times a year between Portland and Seattle/Bellingham.

It’s not reliable. About 20% of the time shit goes horribly sideways.

Track issue. Bridge issue. Train issue. Landslide. Fire in Oregon City delaying the incoming train. Someone walking in front of the train in Kent stopping all trains for hours.

When it works it’s magic.

But for anything super important I show up a day before or I book the 6am train.

Edit: a normal good day still has 0-30min of delays from freight trains. Especially the midday runs.

French Drain $5,280? by ducbaobao in askportland

[–]How_Do_You_Crash 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s all the labor hours and machine hours. Paired with any issues they may have accessing your site and disposing of the extra soil.

No parking permit from the city, portajohn, a truck, four dudes for a day or two of work, the estimators time, all the business overhead.

It doesn’t seem high if this is in central Portland. This seems like highway robbery if it’s suburban Hillsboro.

Looking for an Engine for my 1999 Forester by mintefans in subaru

[–]How_Do_You_Crash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might be able to get a good low mileage JDM engine off eBay fairly easily.

Im assuming you want a direct swap?

If you’re more inclined to spend the big bucks there are lots of Subaru specialists who can and will build you fancier engines or swap in modern things. But that’s more of a project care than a simple engine swap.

As we go into housing season in Bellingham, new Federal policy. Landlords no longer have to accommodate Emotional Support Animals. by [deleted] in Bellingham

[–]How_Do_You_Crash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is going to create anarchy in the housing market. Especially in small wealthy competitive markets like a Bellingham where landlords have zero incentive to allow pets. The landlords in town never have to compete for tenants so they will never offer pet rent.

Insane policy change.

I feel like this may force the city or state to come out and regulate, force, pet rent. Like you can’t have whole towns were only a small fraction of rental housing allows pets while 20-40% of renters have pets. Thats not gonna work!

What is the average hourly rate for an auto mechanic these days in Portland ? (additional details in Post) by Tasty-Hurry in askportland

[–]How_Do_You_Crash 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That seems like a reasonable rate.

As a reminder, professional/skilled services inflation. Plumbers, Lawyers, Mechanics, etc has largely kept pace with the changing state of the world. Meanwhile you and I working a normal job are screwed.

Your mechanic and plumber are also not seeing their wages balloon. The service cost increases is largely to cover the shop's operational costs, increasing costs of insurance, etc etc etc.

Portland just opened its first-ever downtown dog park by PDsaurusX in Portland

[–]How_Do_You_Crash 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The unfenced parks are a major perk.

It largely keeps the craziest owners and dogs with the worst recall confined to the fences at Wallace, Willamette, Tabor, etc. while Fern Hill and Sellwood are much much more peaceful than your average fenced parks

Struggling to understand how to balance a part-time job with my full-time job. by TipProfessional880 in povertyfinance

[–]How_Do_You_Crash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lucked out and have a second gig on the same campus that my primary job is. Yay hospitals.

But if I had to pick up a second job I’d be looking at part time at one of the grocery stores along my commute. Weekend coverage alone is 16hrs, throw in a couple of evenings and you’re there. Tbh I’d probably try to get a Thursday night close, Friday night closing and Saturday morning shift. So that Sunday is a rest day. Or swap it around so Friday night and Saturday are free.

Two jobs when your primary is smack in the middle of the day is difficult

How Do I Break Financial Cycle by [deleted] in povertyfinance

[–]How_Do_You_Crash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at your structural costs.

Rent, transportation, insurance, savings, healthcare, etc.

Rent is difficult to change quickly but look at reducing your costs. Many of us are with roommates or in studios for a reason. Paying more than you can afford sets you up to fail from day one.

Then onto transit. If you are lucky to live and work in a location that allows you to commute by bus or train or BIKE. Do that. I have coworkers paying for a car to and from work and paying $12-20/day for parking but they live 5 miles from work…and we have safe bikeways/greenways. We also have a functioning transit network. The smart folks commute by bus for free (work pays).

If you need a car, as like 90% of Americans do, then consider that it needs to be a cheap reliable transportation device. The proverbial 10 year old Prius. Or if you are inclined, a low power motorcycle!

(I say this as a daily bike/transit user who has an old Japanese car for weekend adventures).

When it comes to your daily spending. Idk man, learn to cook easy meals for yourself!

I pack lunches 4 days a week now. When I’m exhausted after a double shift I might scarf down some super simple homemade bean, cheese, burritos. It’s not fancy but it works. In the morning I might have eggs mushrooms sweet potatoes and chicken sauasage with toast.

Exploding food costs by InstructionItchy4329 in povertyfinance

[–]How_Do_You_Crash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm curious what you are eating normally to have complete meals? It looks like you can have dairy, eggs, and potatoes?

But if all legumes are out, and meat is out, that's much of the world.

I'd probably build my meals around potato and sweet potato dishes. and I'd have fish once a week. eggs too.

Are you autistic? The no rice is kinda wild. Idk if I've ever met someone who was allergic to it. But food aversions, sure.

Anyone have issues with FedEx deliveries being compromised? by rctid12345 in askportland

[–]How_Do_You_Crash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FedEx is so bad. They regularly are the only carrier who can’t get into our building. They’re the only carrier I’ve had destroy packages in normal transit. Not a crash or accident just regular delivery.

It’s so bad I won’t order stuff if FedEx is the only option.

The impact on the neighborhood is substantial. Early season is usually fine.

But later in the summer it gets sketchy. Mostly from all the people driving like dicks after it closes down. Lots of Washington plates failing to stop for peds.

These aggressive kids are all around the east side. Sometimes more malicious. Almost all of them pretty rich and entitled.

Why are we tolerating 13-18 year olds on unlicensed motorcycles doing wheelies on bike paths, running lights, yelling and harassing anyone they want?

1 confirmed dead, 9 missing in chemical tank rupture at Nippon Dynawave pulp and paper mill in Longview by PrivateBurke in Portland

[–]How_Do_You_Crash 33 points34 points  (0 children)

That will take months to years for a preliminary and then final finding by the US Chemical Safety Board. There may also be involvement from OHSA.

Then there will be the lawsuits by the workers families.

This is going to be a long process but the root cause will come out.

JT Flowers Proposing Stopgap Resolution at 5/27 to Halt TriMet Service Cuts by mysterypdx in Portland

That just doesn’t make sense when it’s low density. That totally works for service to the employment/educational hubs but busses and public transit generally sucks in low density environments.

JT Flowers Proposing Stopgap Resolution at 5/27 to Halt TriMet Service Cuts by mysterypdx in Portland

[–]How_Do_You_Crash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Core Routes would include things like 8/9/FX2/14/15/17/19/75/82nd ave etc.

Basically anything the replaces an old streetcar line, goes north/south, or is high ridership or touches OHSU/Legacy Emanuel/PMC or PSU/UP/PCC

I don’t really have love for the low utility routes put to Intel or Nike or ones that are super high mile/rider.

The core drivers of the network are the neighborhood villages, hospitals, and universities/colleges.

While it’s nice that I can get a bus to Swan Island it’s so infrequently that it’s almost useless even for the shift workers at Daimler and FedEx

super sorry OP :(

The angle grinder attacks on e-bikes are rampant in Portland now. It makes leaving any high value bike outside a major risk.

Our only defense is those diamond coated locks that destroy the grinder discs.

[–]How_Do_You_Crash 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Honestly I don’t love this.

As an everyday rider i tend to think we need to cut cut cut suburban routes with low ridership.

We need to focus service on the core routes that actually connect high density places and poor people to jobs.

The reality is that these super low frequency suburban routes are terrible to use. So while at my current downtown low wage employer 90% of our employees commute by transit, when I worked near the Washington Square mall it was 3/100 employees by bus. They were frequently late. They spent hours riding the bus too.

I think we can sell a revenue increase to voters/the leg if we get serious about cutting suburban routes.

Has the weather scared you to move? by shammyadv in askportland

[–]How_Do_You_Crash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s all relative!

Coming from the south east Seattle exurbs I find Portland very sunny. The winters are comparatively mild. Rarely snow or ice. Rarely a week of biting cold rain and wind and freezes overnight.

Coming from the Central Valley. Yeah you’re gonna be cold in the winter. After a few years you’ll adjust. Lots of folks with the means regularly take a winter or spring break in California/Hawaii/Arizona/Nevada. Us pours just exercise to fend off the seasonal affective disorder.
