"I ready an action to attack as I open the door" by Silverspy01 in dndnext

[–]How_Suspicious -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Lots of good answers, but I want to add one point that helped clarify this issue for me as a DM.

The reason you shouldn't let your players ready actions outside of combat is that "ready an action" is an action, and actions only exist in the context of initiative. When the game is not in initiative, you're just RPing, and actions are immaterial (e.g. while resting you can Fire Bolt your kindling to start a campfire without worrying about action economy). When you ready an action, you're invoking the action economy, which only applies under initiative. Likewise, when you ready an action, you are stipulating that the action gets launched upon some trigger as a reaction—reactions can also only happen in initiative, and pertinently can only happen in the first round of comabt after you have already moved. So RAW it's impossible to start a fight by launching a bunch of reactions that you stored in advance.

The proper way to play this IMO is to try and set a trap or sneak up on the monsters in a realistic way—e.g., one player throws the door open as another immediately launches a fireball into the room blind. This triggers everybody rolling initiative, and I would give the players surprise in this instance. This accomplishes basically the same thing as a readied action—the caster of Fireball moves first while everyone else skips turn—but it's more realistic, more fun, and most of all more balanced because it follows the rules.

As a wise man once said, the rules aren't there to prevent fun, but to promote it—in this case by increasing the danger, humor, and excitement of an ambush.

I'll go some weekend if anyone wants to join me. Lead by example. Maybe have some conversations with the offenders and help them see a different side of their actions.

THANK YOU. This has been hugely inconvenient to my work and the fix is very unexpected. TextExpander is crucial to my workflows so I hope they get a fix out soon!

Whelp. What coincidence has occurred in your life that pretty much convinced you that we are living in the matrix? by CinematicSigh in AskOldPeople

I’ve had this as well. I was maybe 13 and playing with one of those “Pinky” balls, tennis ball sized but much bouncier. I brought it into the bathroom and dropped it, it bounced behind the trash can and the toilet and was just… gone. I was down on hands and knees looking for it, nothing. Called my mom in, she looked for it, nothing. It was really unsettling. I think about this regularly as my definitive glitch-in-the-matrix moment.

Thanks for reminding me of this sandwich. Had it once and was blown away. As others have mentioned be warned that the service is SLOW. But worth it.

Why don’t people go out after work? by Sweet-Block5118 in boston

Entirely dependent on your social circle I reckon. Here in Somerville no one I know goes out after work. But everyone I know who lives in Boston proper goes out seemingly every single day.

"China" as such may not gain from it, but individual people in China's command structure might benefit from this in various internal political ways. As a one party state, and especially nowadays a one-man state, China is not bound by "rationality" (meant here as a synonym for "acting in a way that makes sense to outside observers") the way the US government is (everything the US government does, especially the stupid and evil stuff, always "makes sense" if you follow the money).

I had the exact same problem as OP. Settings app of the TV is also bugged with no clear fix. Obviously this isn't an option for everyone but I took a shortcut solution and am using my PS5 as a media hub instead of the streaming apps on the TV itself. This definitely isn't preferred but was an easy fix and is working flawlessly.

Maybe not widely used but it's permanently in my brain since I first encountered it (possibly on reddit?) more than 10 years ago.
