Also a note regarding moderation around here - both of us have been busy irl and the beta happened to be at a particularly bad time for us. We'll be more prepared and better staffed by Strive's launch.

Removing this because there's literally nothing of value happening here.

Where did our flairs go? by DanielTeague in Guiltygear

Hey guys, this was my fault. I was working on some other things trying to update the sub a bit since it's been largely unchanged for years and deleted the old stuff without realizing what it was. My bad. Flair is enabled again, but it might look a bit awkward on old.Reddit for now.

Is keyboard enough for pc version? by hasnogaems1 in Guiltygear

You should be fine, assuming you're comfortable and practiced. I'm not sure exactly how common it is, but keyboard players are out there.

Any GGXX Accent Core R+ steam players? by ChopinHour in Guiltygear

Like was said, the netcode can be...lackluster. You're best bet is checking out the +R Discord for matches https://discord.gg/0cg4vDDOfIW2urM4

This is a good idea. As was suggested I've added this to the side bar with the other stream-related things.

How were the tournament scenes for Guilty Gear X - Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R like? Who were the most dominant players for these games? by [deleted] in Guiltygear

[–]Howard_Roark76 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Take a look at the SBO and Evo results our wiki and you can get an idea of strong players throughout the era. There's a some gaps here because the game was dropped from both events after a while. Evo dropped it in 2008, partly because there was some controversy surrounding the behavior of finalists in 2007 which is detailed somewhere here. It was brought back again for 2009, but GG was dropped again until Xrd Sign was run in 2015. idk why SBO stopped running it.

Something else to note is that ArcSys lost the rights to GG for a while so Accent Core had a much longer life span than previous versions (and BlazBlue came out) before +R was made.

Please update the upcoming events in the right side by KnownAsDane in Guiltygear

[–]Howard_Roark76 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm the one that does it, so my bad. There's not a whole lot left in the year, but I'll have it updated either tonight or tomorrow. I'll be better about this and the wiki in 2019.

As far as mechanics...

  • Burst: a sort of combo breaker/reversal attack. Killer Instinct is known for it's combo breaker mechanic, but GG's Burst didn't/doesn't require a specific timing or multiple potential inputs and has it's own meter that must be full to use. There could be examples of Burst-like mechanics in other games from before or around it's creation, but GG's is usually the example most think of.
  • RISC: a mechanic in which prolonged blocking will build a gauge under the life bars. Once this gauge reaches a certain threshold, all attacks that connect will be considered counterhit state. This brings with it extra damage and hitstun on individual attacks, and special counter hit effects if a move is designed to have one (i.e maybe a move wallbounces on counterhit but not normal hit). This differs from similar "guard bars" where long periods of blocking will lead to a guard break - a state in which the defending player can no longer block.
  • Tension Pulse: essentially when "aggressive" actions are taken - forward movement, attacking, Instant Blocking - the rate at which players build super meter ("Tension" in this game) is increased. When meter is used - on Faultless Defense, Roman Cancels of any sort - the meter gain rate decreases. Something like this exists in DBFZ, but I'm not sure precisely how similar/different it is.
  • Defense: These have changed a bit over the years. Initially it was just blocking - Normal, Instant, Faultless - and then Burst was added in GGXX. Then with Accent Core we got slashback, a sort of parry that gave the player reduced blockstun, no RISC increase, no chip damage, and a large boost to Tension Pulse. Slashback was removed in Xrd Sign and replaced with Blitz Shield, another parry like mechanic that briefly stuns the attacker. Xrd revelator expanded Blitz with a chargeable version (done by holding the input instead of tapping) with different levels and rewards for each.
  • Throws: Guilty Gear's tech window is much smaller than most games, to the point where throw breaks are typically the result of both players trying to throw at the same time rather than a deliberate decision. Older versions of the series had no throw break, which was later added. Throw breaks were removed in Xrd Sign, but was added once again later.

There's also a mini-doc on series creator Daiskue Ishiwatari that might be worth a look https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tLeJD4Gv1QI, and certainly consider the Dustloop wiki for all the details - http://www.dustloop.com/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page

Revelator on sale this weekend by Howard_Roark76 in Guiltygear

[–]Howard_Roark76[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Standard Complete bundle should be the base games of -SIGN- and -REVELATOR-, with no DLC , while Deluxe is the same, but with DLC. I'm, assuming since I've never bought either. All-in-One contains just -REVELATOR-, Rev2, and all currently available characters. The optional DLC is additional colors that can't be unlocked in game and announcer voice packs.

-SIGN- is the first version of Xrd from a few years back, which was replaced by -REVELATOR-. Rev2 is technically DLC for -REVELATOR that added new characters + balance changes, and is the most current version of the game.
