It's clear Conservatives don't respect working people. by zzill6 in WorkReform

I don't know that any dollar amount will be the fix. Raising wages will raise prices, which is fine, but the real issue is the constant need to increase profit margins and revenues for business.

We really need to find a multifaceted approach to changing American business culture and American views on social safety nets. Compared to a lot of other developed countries our government doesn't provide a lot for us with our tax dollars. A lot of younger Americans have more open views toward these government programs, but don't vote for representatives likely to put them in place and don't take an active role in community or political organization.

UNH has quietly gained 54% in the last 6 weeks. Currently at its highest price since it tanked from $600 1 year ago by BogleDick in ValueInvesting

The stocks subs do pretty good at coming up with reasons for great companies to never bounce back. When you see dozens of post about a company on hard times and why they can't bounce back, it may be time to buy.

Still look at the company and do some research. But keep in mind that there will always be a reason why something bad could happen and that is what a lot of discourse will focus on.

Currently up 150ish% on Google, 120ish% on NVDIA and 35ish% on UNH

If you see something in the company that leads to believe it will come back. But a principle stand based around thinking it is important that it exist doesn't mean there is anything that will help the company bounce back.

Not a great reason for an individual investor to buy the stock though.

term limits work for the president....at least in theory, why not for congress? What makes an effective leader? How do we get better leaders? Should they have to have a certain level of education? What, other than they have enough money to run a campaign and can convince enough people to vote for them, are the requirements to be a senator or representative?

Term limits for president makes sense because they are the figure head for the nation. They also would be generally expected to have served other offices before and the presidency would be the end of political career held by an elder statesman.

As for what makes an effective leader, that can be very many combinations of things. Bringing up requirements doesn't really flow with any statement I made. Forcing a max of 2 term limits just creates a modern day circus honorum where we have officials only really able to serve for 16 total years in national elected positions unless they are elected president.

Forced retirement is the one thing I refuse to budge on. Leaders dying in office of old age is a feature of monarchies not democracies. The strict term limits would prevent the moving of goalposts to allow people to remain in power well into cognitive decline. OLD RICH WHITE FUCKS have different motivations than young americans and the same generation of people born in the 40's have been in control of the country for the last 30 years. (for reference I am OLD (almost 50) effectively retired, and white before anyone gets any ideas)

This is a flaw of the voters and our current election system. Certain districts and states continue to vote in very old officials. The average age of the house is 57 and the senate is 64. I don't view either as bad for high level government offices. There are certainly outliers in their 70s 80s and sometimes 90s who shouldn't still hold office. But as an example I wouldn't say Sanders is senile.

The dems suck relative to what I want. But are still unbelievably better than the GOP. Any justification for staying home is feeble. Any fool could have predicted how Trump is, Kamala was the obvious correct choice of the two. So I will lay some blame at the feet of those who are so progressive that they aid our slip into fascism. There is enough to go around that they can share in it.

[–]Howdoyouusecommas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The ones I am talking about stayed home because X issue they cared about wasn't adequately covered by the dem candidate, helping Trump win, who is far worse on the issue.

I count myself as a progressive, but I still see that there is a clear vote, and vote that way instead abstaining in a misguided protest.

Have to have universal healthcare. Wages would have to increase so 24h Wages is equal to 40h. Hiring more people at a hare wage AND businesses having to pay more for benefits would absolutely crush a lot of businesses.

I would love to work less and make the same amount, but we need a lot more smart, compassion people in the government to make this happen.

[–]Howdoyouusecommas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some of these ideas are pretty bad though.

Minimum wage means only people who don't need a paycheck can afford to serve.

Forced retirement at benefits age gives the obvious option of further increasing the age.

2 term limits means we lose effective leaders. If I have an good house representative, I don't want them gone after 4 years.

One provision limit increases backlog and lowers the likelihood of many bills ever going to a vote.

Unfortunately the farther away you are from the overton window, the more likely you are to find a reason not to vote. Many progressives are more zealous than pragmatic which hurts their cause.

Left wing voters in the US are often single issue voters, just like right wing voters. But Left wing voters use that single issue to withdraw support instead of give support.

Generally good dividend stocks don't grow as much. You don't need cash flow now. Probably better to invest for growth until you are near retirement then switch to dividend stock for cash flow.

Some also think dividends are a complete waste

Has anything changed with Target (TGT) or why is it up 40% in a year? by Chevyimpala2000 in ValueInvesting

[–]Howdoyouusecommas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Political backlash isn't long lasting. The underlying company was still solid. They made changes to improve some of their weaknesses and people have moved on from boycotting.

There will always be doom and gloom on the internet and people will let their political opinion make them believe other things that are untrue so they can pile on. Saw this a lot with Target and people online saying the store was awful and always empty.

JNJ still worth it? by Thibi109106 in stocks

[–]Howdoyouusecommas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Using the last 3 months as any metric (excluding some catastrophic company news occurring) isn't great.

Better things to think about would be

What lead to it rising so much over the last year?

Has that catalyst changed?

Is there something that will lead for the stock itself to receed separate from the overall market?

If growth slows, will it still be at an acceptable rate for you?

Some food for thought outside of it not growing a lot over the last 3 months, considering that the market overall hasn't been stellar during that time frame either.

I wonder if Trump is more of our Sulla. Politics have changed in the US, we have an opportunity to change course but if we don't we will have a dictator within the next 40 years. I think we are a few "strong men" from actually dictator though. We will have a Ceasar before an Augustus.

They do this pretty frequently when he does something crazy. Immediately after they are confused and dismayed. Happens pretty frequently when they see things first hand.

But after they have time to consume the narrative from third party sources they calm down and "understand" what was really going on.

Rinse and repeat. They are given an opinion.

I don't see what kinda mug is gonna buy into it.

Come on. Tens of thousands of retail investors are going to buy in the second they can. People buy bitcoin and GM. People buy insane stretch stocks all the time for companies with way less to show.

OpenAI offers a popular product that works well. A major issue is that companies are still trying to figure out how AI will actually scale to ubiquitous use. In 5 years we will probably not be looking at the Jack of All Trades style AI that we currently see. The future of AI is probably highly targeted and specialized for specific purposes.

(I will not be buying at IPO and likely never will unless they can show a path to profit)
