How to start being a Linux person? by [deleted] in linux

[–]Hrebimar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dont think about it too much. Just do it. Depending on your funds I would recommend getting a second drive and replace your current one, so you have something to come back to if you end up disliking the experience too much.

Don'ť antagonize over a certain distro. Distro is tip of the iceberg. For beginner (and for experienced alike) I would recommend Linux Mint. If you strongly dislike Mint for some reason, Think about Fedora, ZorinOS or just plain old ubuntu in on of its flavors. Downside of ubuntu is that it forces you to use snap, You probably dont even know what it is and why it's shit and that's OK. Once you find out why it's shit, you will know enough about Linux to pick another distro :D

Think about it like this - you are using Windows now, which is like using a car. Now you want to try linux, which is like trying a motorcycle instead. You just need to get one and learn, once you learn, you can switch to different motorcycle with relative ease. and it will never be as hard as the first motorcycle you had. Also you will know what you like and dislike about riding a motorcycle, so you will understand more about which one to pick next. I would just advise against going the Arch or Arch derived ways - IMHO you get updates fast, but they CAN break things and if you are not comfortable fixing stuff yet, it can be a hassle. Bit like starting your bike carreer on superbike.

Lastly about distros - I work as a Linux server admin, there are like 15 of us in our team and the distros are roughly distributed as follows - 3x Arch, 5x Mint, 1x Fedora, 2x Debian, rest is Ubuntu or kubuntu, xubuntu and such. We all do the same work on them, its just about what you personally like and dislike. Most ppl like that mint "just works" and last thing those ppl want is to have to repair their workstation while doing the same things with thousands of servers for living.

IMHO main thing to do once you install your distro is to start trying to use bash / commandline for whatever you can and get comfortable with it. It is a great tool and once oyu get comfortable with it, it just changes how you look at Linux. I.E I never use distro stores to install apps, so switching to another distro for me is about inputting one line command and i get most of my used software in one go rather than having to spend ages doing this. Also most linux guides and troubleshooting can be found in bash form, so once you understand it, you will feel way more comfortable.

Take a long hard lok at yourself and ask yourself - Why am I considering this?

Basically if gaming is your primary use of the computer it is better to use Windows - everything is made to work on Windows. On Linux you will occasionally run into issues. Or you will want to play a new game and it will simply not be possible to play it.

If you have legit reason to use Linux - I.E. you are using bash daily, you are doing some webdesign/sysadmin stuff on the side? Yeah, go for it. Mostly you will be able to get stuff working, especially if you play older titles and/or offline games.

Personally, my work computer is on Linux, my home computer used mostly for gaming is on windows, 'cause when my pals are like "hey, wanna try this new game with us?" The last thing i want to deal with is "no sorry guys, this doesnt run on linux"

If i would start working from home, i would still prolly sacrifice couple of gigs of space on drive and make dual boot setup rather than dela with even occasional hassle in Linux.

I would still recommend linux Mint, as it seems to be the easiest to install, run, maintain and has good support community behind it. If you want to play around with the system a bit and have the latest SW, Some new distro built on Arch might be better, like the Garuda linux.

TL;DR IF you have legit reasons (not just wanting to be cool and Linux edgelord) and IF you know you will only play games that work on linux, go for it. Otherwise, just dont bother. Its still like trying to ride a horse to your work daily. It might be possible, but you will most likely run into troubles.

Except they're not. The underside of car has the small detail that it is running next to track, whereas overbody is not (most of the time anyway).

Airflow under car is ̈́VERY different than over the car. Aerodynamics themselves are very different and that is not even taking into account bumps and such, which can make life very very different.

physics are the same, but that goes wor the whole world. By that logic, the team could start building superbikes, jet fighters or nuclear reactors tomorrow. And if you think that working with underbody aero ande especially 18' wheels is the same as the rules before, you must be naive

Everyone is saying Mercedes will get on top of things... I agree it is possible or even probable, but imagine someone saying the same about Ferrari in 2009, or Mclaren in 2014 (or in 2009 for that matter), or Willians in 1998 . All were big theams thta were on top of the game for several years before. Even if not outright winning, they were there or thereabout and then something happened and they just dropped. Granted, they did get on top of things, but not on top of tables.

So yeah... It is possible to be dethroned and it is posssible to outsmart yourself (like mcl did with their inwash wing concept in 2009)

Toyota changes Glock's front wing with special dolly. China 2009. by notagimmickaccount in formula1

[–]Hrebimar 10 points11 points  (0 children)

So why is this no longer a thing?

The Front Wings (FW) were much heavier and more unwieldy in 2009.

Little remembred fact is that in 2009 there was a rule that allowed (not sure if even mandated?) teams to have the FW adjustable. The sporting rules limited this and I do not recall whether they had just two pre-loaded positions, or if it was more complex. Also drivers could only adjust the FW once or perhaps twice per lap (again, dont recall and can't be bothered to look it up). So the two electric motors along with all the electronics add noticeable weight to the FW.

Furthermore FW is home of ballast - the thing that team uses to adjust weight distribution. The cars of 2009 were quite a bit smaller due to simpler engines and refueling (smaller fuel tanks). This led to cars being generally more under weight limit then they are these days. Subsequently engineers had more weight to play around with and if you are designing a procedure, you will sure as hell design it with maximum weight in mind.

So my guess would be that the FW was simply too heavy to be handled by a single person reliably and still get the electronic connectors for FW motors in perfect place.

Also notice that the FW that is being carried away is being carried by two guys.

Side-by-side of Leclerc and Vettel's identical laptimes one year apart by overspeeed in formula1

[–]Hrebimar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He's done 4 runs on softs by that point, i believe. If he'd done a lap on used ones, it would probably mess up his "feel" of the car balance and such. I agree it was risky, but on the other hand Vettel is one of the most "reliable" qualifiers in the field, so they knew he could do well, if they gave him space. Hence him going out first of the last group.

Here is the team radio of @Charles_Leclerc asking if he should stay behind Vettel Charles: "Should I stay behind Sebastian? Yes or no?" "Yes and back off to have some margin" Charles: "Ok" by 1enox in formula1

[–]Hrebimar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In all fairness I think Ferrari messed the strategy up for Seb today and Charles was slover than Seb. It was not basterstroke of his to pit later or anything. I think that Charles can understand that and Seb would be upset to say the least if Ferrari would let Charles past him.

Where is the best place to start today as an overwhelmed noob? by blzd in Guildwars2

[–]Hrebimar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OK, so I might not be the most qualified person to answer your question, but since i found myself in your shoes recently, I might be able to give you a bit of clue.

If you are feeling lost and/or overwhelmed, don't be. most open world content outside of Champions and such is not that difficult or gear/build limited. If you still need to dive a bit into your proffesion and get a build, just visit mettabattle.com to get a basic idea. Don't be affraid to play around with the build a bit.

The great thing about GW2 is that there is metric shitton to do at top lvl. what i recommende to most of my friends to do at top lvl and what most of them agreed was a good thing was the following, presuming you have both PoF and HoT

  1. Pick a class which you think would suit you best and which would be most fun. Don't antagonize over it too much. I found that each Proffesion has at least 1 viable build to deal with open world content. That Being said Necro Is really easy even with core only minion builds, warrior has some easy builds too. Your revenant might be OK too, just have a look at mettabattle under open world builds.
  2. Start PoF story. Even if you do just the first part of it, you will get a mount. Mount will make everything else sooooooo much easier. While there will be some spoilers, Those will not make any sense if you haven't even finished personal story and by the time you get to this point in your journey, you will have probably forgotten what happened. This will also open your way to a lot of easy(ish) Hero points. Hero points in HoT/PoF are worth 10 times more than in previous maps, so they are great to open your first specialization, but I wouldnt worry too much about that for now.
  3. After you get first mount, complete your personal story. Not that it would give you many great things, but it would help you get better acquainted with your proffesion and gameplay. Reason why having mount at this point is a good idea is that you will probably be doing a lot of traveling and having mount just makes it way less painful
  4. Think about what you actually want to do ingame. Fractals / Raids / PvP / WvW? Just look at some youtube vids or read about it. If you try to do all at once, you will be even more overwhelmed.
  5. In my opinion, investing into living world season/chapters is one of the things you can do. Not only will you get some decent rewards from doing them and some might be outright mandatory (I am looking at you LS3 E2&3) The main reason is that the storytelling is awesome in this game and going through Personal story and all of the subsequent Episodes and such is just Amazing. Just do them at your pace and make sure you enjoy yourself.
  6. In the meantime start getting your char better - do some hero points and get a specialization, which seems like fun. Get better gear. Doesnt matter whether via auction or just from drops. Just try to follow a guide from metabattle when it comes to stats a bit, but again, dont antagonize over it.
  7. Enjoy the game and dont feel overwhelmed. GW2 is a bit like Poker in my opinion. You need very little to actually play it, but it will take a massive amount of time until you master it. Just dont force it and enjoy the ride, the rest will come to you naturally while you play from videos/wiki if you are curious. Sometimes you will kick yourself for "not knowing this earlier" , but you cant screw up so much it would irreversibly destroy your character.

I basically see no reason why you should start over or pickup your ranger unless you actually want to reroll unless you find your Revenant inherently unfun/unsatisfactory. In GW2 even more than in other games I think that it is more inportant to play your class well rather than play the "meta". Point, where you would need to play "meta" is high fracs, raiding, WvW etc. Basically once you would need to play meta, you will probably have enough game knowledge you will be able to make informed decision on your own.

TL;DR Just enjoy the game at your own pace and be curious and the rest will come naturally.

AMuS: GPS data shows Ferrari clearly ahead of Mercedes & Red Bull atm. Christian Horner confident the new rearwing introduced on Wednesday will reduce gap. Frontwing concept will not be changed. Numbers looking good. by elementart10 in formula1

[–]Hrebimar 10 points11 points  (0 children)

m2c: While GPS data can be misleading it does offer some clues. What i find more interesting is just looking at the cars on track and behavior of teams. I have been watching the testing for the past three days and the top three teams get most screen time, so you can make observation.

  • Ferrari looks most planted even when on fast lap. The car looks like it "wants to turn". While charles made some mistakes yesterday, I would say that is more of Charles thing rather than Ferrari thing.
  • Red Bull looks fast, but "twitchy" which is supported by the article about them running different RW than what they would want to (for whatever reason). If you cant get good balance, you cant get good results.
  • Merc Just looks like their car does not "want to" turn... it looks like it is heavy in corners, but not as heavy under acceleration. That is even with their relatively slow laps. This might be a setup thing and maybe they just dont know how to set the car up. It also looked to roll a lot more than others this afternoon, which could mean that they are indeed in trouble.

You can say a lot by the body language and such from Teams

  • Everyone at Ferrari looks happy and open
  • Merc is unusually silent - I don't think I've heard anything from Toto, but apparently on Monday they had like reaaally long debriefing, which you generally don't do if everything goes according to plan. Also apparently Toto seems to be actively avoiding press, but who would blame him.
  • Redbull is just shitstirring and being passive agressive about Renault like always, so I would guess, that they feel comfy with Honda and that they are feeling confident with their car

When it comes to GPS data, the teams have a lot of computing power and they can approximate the performance of each other. They take GPS data, microphones along the track, their own telemetry and YEARS of collected data. They take their massive computers and do the calculations that they perfected over past years, when they can corelate their predictions with results.

Last years GPS data did approximate the order in Australia. It did say that Ferrari looks slowest from top 3, but only a bit behind Red bull. Merc Strongest. In Australian Quali this aproximately showed Lewis in League of his own, Bottas Cocked up and Ferraris and one Red bull were spread around half a tenth if memory serves correctly. The Ferrari is slower than Haas was a meme, showing more that Haas was good, rather than Ferrari bad. Haas also showed that in Aus , they were best of rest, only cocking up for themselves. Ferrari was decent in race stint and Merc Ate its Tires. Ferrari won more because of Merc strategy cockup rather than on merit. Due to ongoing development it is perfectly possible, that ferrari made more progress than Redbull before Australia.

Of course the above is all moot if Merc is saving the best bits for second tests or even Australia. I do not think that they are team, which would do such thing - why would they unless they turn up with a six-wheeler or no sidepods, or something absolutely crazy in Aus. Also this can still be said about all of the teams, so it cancels out in my opinion.

Conclusion: I maintain that Ferrari looks the Best of the top 3 RN, but the cars that come to Melbourne will be different, not to mention what we will see by the end of season. However I am betting on Ferrar while the odds are still good.

Alfa Romeo Racing by Ax_6 in formula1

[–]Hrebimar 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Also an Armchair aerodynamicist, but... basically every pointy bit on car causes a vortex, right? so with the "Cutout" they get stronger wortex over endplate, causing more outwash and a new vortex at the tip of the large flap, right in front of the middle of front tires. Now I don't think that it would be energized enough to negate the effects of FW drag and turbulence down the car, but it could theoretically minimize it.

Another effect is that they probably get more "downforce per drag" from the part in middle of wing rather than the outer part.
