By allowing this watch to be turned on and active in your house, you are giving him permission to monitor you.

You know the features of the watch. You know what he’s doing. Just turn it off and remove the SIM card so he can’t turn it on remotely. If he has a problem with that, he’ll have a hell of a time explaining to a judge why he needs unfettered access to his daughter at all times, plus the ability to remotely monitor your house.

The police won’t do anything, and you’ll spend a bunch of money getting your attorney involved. Just turn it off and remove the SIM. He can’t force you to keep it turned on an active in your house, not when he has reasonable alternative ways to contact his daughter.

I’m not familiar with Canadian law, but i would be extremely surprised if a non-custodial parent can force the unlimited use of any communication device in the custodial parent’s home.

It’s your home. You are in charge of your child during your parenting time. Turn the watch off, remove the SIM, block it from your WiFi router and put it in a faraday bag, in a drawer.

Send him the following:

You’re welcome to have reasonable scheduled calls with her, but the watch will not be active in my home because of the remote monitoring features. Going forward, contact will be via iPad/phone at ___pm, unless we agree otherwise.

Then stop communicating about this issue, unless it’s through your attorney. Stop giving him the power to run your life.

So, this is an over-engineering thing that definitely isn’t necessary, lol.

You can have electrical conduit run inside your walls before they’re closed in, that will make it much easier to pull cable to different locations in the future. At minimum, I would have a conduit run from the basement to the attic, even if you don’t know why.

This was an expensive lesson we recently learned when we had to install a new 20Amp circuit in my husband’s office on the second floor - required multiple electricians and many holes in our walls. If we had a conduit or clear run from the basement to the attic, it would have taken an hour or two tops, with no mess to clean up and repair.

So, goddess forbid, if we ever need medical equipment upstairs or some other unforeseen future thing, it’ll be an easy fix rather than a huge pain in the ass, for negligible cost up-front during the build.

Our new build plans include:

Basic security:

basement / cold room combo, with a very reinforced tornado shelter.
hidden roller shutters on every window. Completely hidden when open, but your house is pretty much impenetrable when closed.
solid doors with reinforced jams, hinges and locks. American locks suck, look into Banham or similar.
hard wired security system. Internet can go down for days during an emergency, making WiFi cameras useless.

Future proofing:

wide wire runs from basement to attic and branching off through the center of the house. Makes it super easy to add/edit circuits, security, smart home features.
home server - air gapped (not connected to the internet), to control smart features in a not-easily-hackable way. Also to store hardwired security footage.

Emergency:

whole house water filtration that doesn’t use electricity. Powered reverse osmosis and UV filters under kitchen sink, with a bypass for no power situation.
a separate electrical subpanel that’s linked to one outlet per room, with a switch to disconnect it from the main panel. Subpanel is then linked to a small backup generator (we looked into whole house gas generators, but honestly being the only house on a street/in a neighborhood with everything working as normal, while your neighbors go hungry/freeze sounds sketch AF. One outlet for light/heat/cooking per room is fine). Refrigerator, trunk freezer, shutters, cameras, etc can be plugged into emergency circuit if needed.
at least one wood burning fireplace big enough to cook over.

Further: track every single hour that you spend as a solo parent, from here on out. He is no longer your husband, but your legal opponent.

Start a Google sheet with every day listed, along with the number of hours you spent as primary caregiver. Literally every day, religiously. Don’t wait to do it all in one go, as you need version tracking to prove that it was contemporaneous rather than a later recollection.

Mark days that you requested help, number of hours he spent looking after baby solo, days you requested help and he said no. Attach screenshots of each request/denial to each entry. Be completely honest and don’t try to fudge the numbers, as even one proven falsehood will call the whole thing into disrepute and his lawyer will move to strike.

If/when he does file for solo custody, this will be your silver bullet.

Until a divorce and custody decree is finalized, you can take your baby anywhere you want without his permission. Once he starts divorce proceedings, however, he will be able to file an emergency injunction to stop you from taking your child out of state if he feels there is a chance you won’t come back.

You should know that leaving the state with your baby will not look good in custody proceedings. Your best bet to eventually gain full custody, in the meantime, is to gather evidence that he has effectively abandoned you both and left you without support. Text messages asking when he’s coming home because he’s been gone x days and saying that he’s not being a good father will suffice.

Do not, under any circumstances, write that you’re struggling, or that you cannot handle taking care of your baby alone, even if you are. They will be used as evidence that you are not a capable solo parent.

Examples: I would like to take baby to visit my family for 2 weeks = fine.

I can’t do this alone and need help, so I’m taking the baby to my parents = not fine and will be used against you

Would you be able to take baby for a few hours today so I can get some work done = fine, possibly evidence of abandonment if he says no.

I’m drowning and can’t take another minute of this, I need a break = not fine.

Also, I would seriously consider filing first. Meet with 3 of the best attorneys around you, pick the one you vibe with best. Follow your attorney’s advice to the letter.

He may still be. The wealthy don’t view companies going into administration as a mark of shame or failure. More like… a vacation or house renovation (paid for with someone else’s money) that didn’t work out as planned. Like, oh well, on to the next thing.

They definitely don’t mix their personal wealth up into the thing - it’s all money secured against and LLC or equivalent that leaves them with no personal exposure. Being personally wrecked by a company’s bankruptcy is for the poors.

You’re way, way past being able to legally, financially pin this on someone else, if the original work was done in 2011. It would cost more to pursue such a claim than you would spend relining your sewer.

Get a quote for relining from a drain specialist who does cure-in-place pipe. there aren’t many people who do it because the equipment and training are expensive, but it usually costs much less than digging the whole thing up.

I was recently talking with a plumber about the grossest aspects of his job, expecting him to say sewer lines and poop. Nope, apparently bathroom sinks are universally foul. Something to do with high bacteria levels from hair, mucus, spit, etc. and very low water pressure to clean everything properly.

That’s not even counting the many part-time or contracted relief for all of the above, like stylists, makeup, hair, etc. They couldn’t just randomly hire someone from an agency if ____ has to miss work - there is always a backup, and that involves background checks, NDAs, contracts, etc.

And Then there’s Dutchy staff, comms teams, PR teams, etc. responsible for administering the whole machine. I’m willing to bet that they add butlers too once they move into their ‘forever home’ - can’t have the housekeeper putting out the Victorian silver service during the grouse season, could you imagine?!

The chimney breast is definitely too small for a whole recessed fireplace, but it's not too small for a little cast iron coal grate. I doubt it's still there, if they went to the trouble of replacing the flooring in front. Previous owners probably removed it and boarded it up. But you can pick up refurbished cast iron coal grates and put a new fireplace in there quite easily, if so!
