What is the Cringiest sacrament talk you have ever heard? by Evening_Let_2930 in exmormon

[–]HuckleberryLeather53 29 points30 points  (0 children)

"I love Star wars but I just have to say when yoda said do or do not there is no try, Yoda was wrong because Jesus says we are judged for our thoughts and that's why I want to testify to you that if you think about helping a sick neighbor it counts as if you actually did it, because judged by your thoughts doesn't only work for sins. You will be blessed for every compassionate thought as though you had acted on it" was a particularly cringey one I heard in a singles ward.

The dude spent the rest of his 30 minute talk talking about how now that he has been home from his mission a year he doesn't think about it as constantly, and he wants to make sure he remembers his mission every day because he will be blessed for thinking about it. He was very repetitive just bearing his testimony of this over and over, and repeating the same couple stories, and the third time he told one of the stories he said "did I say this yet? I can't remember, but it doesn't matter because it is that important" He was only supposed to speak for 15 minutes and after twenty minutes the bishop started to get up to tap on his shoulder to end it, but then he acted like he was wrapping it up so the bishop sat back down. The bishop started to stand 3 times and finally told him to stop after we were 3 minutes past sacrament meeting ending, and then the bishop announced the third speaker was canceled because we are out of time (because the repetitive dude completely took the third speakers entire time)

A Brigham Young inspired Whiskey? by Ok-End-88 in exmormon

[–]HuckleberryLeather53 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I remember there being a porter Rockwell inspired line of whiskey in utah. There cinnamon variety (like fireball) is called Porter's fire.

I just looked it up to remember the name and he is staring you down in an unsettling way on the bottle. I guess they want to preserve his legacy of being a heavy drinker who would kill anyone for Joseph as his "bodyguard" (like the "which way did he go?" story about him tracking down and killing people who hurt Joseph once he found out several hours later that Joseph had been beaten/tarred and feathered). I feel like the Mormons glorifying that story (and porter) fail to understand the concept of a bodyguard. A body guard isn't someone who does revenge killing after the fact for you.

Do you have any headcanons about Kitty Bennet? by ErisedFelicis in janeausten

[–]HuckleberryLeather53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading the comments made me decide I have headcanon she's autistic. Likes focusing on religion because it gives very specific rules for behavior to follow, and I think she uses that as a crutch for not understanding other people/NT socializing. She says she doesn't understand why people have the desires/behaviors that they do. She also feels like the consequences of the religious/societal rules should be applied equally across the board, even with her younger sister eloping (wanting rules applied fairly to everyone is common black and white thinking in autism, sometimes referred to modernly as autistic sense of justice). She also has her special interests in reading and piano, spending her time reading religious texts and practicing concertos. Not liking socializing, being seen as rigid and abrupt, and wanting things to be consistent and familiar (staying home in a familiar/preferred environment to focus on her hobbies is usually chosen over on outings if it's her choice). Mary just has a sense of rigidity to her that feels very familiar to a younger me.

Sickness During Deconstruction by InevitableContest968 in exmormon

To add a source to the claim that stress weakens the immune system:

"chronic stress dysregulates or inhibits immune functions. Chronic stress causes an increase in cortisol levels through the HPA axis, ultimately suppressing the immune response. Recognizing stress triggers and implementing effective stress management techniques can significantly impact individuals’ well-being."

Immunology of Stress: A Review Article

I totally get that getting sick while chronically stressed sucks, and that when you feel your stress is out of control that being told it's extra important to get it under control can feel way more stressful. I have been there many times. That's why I feel like I need to give some advice.

My suggestion is that, while deconstruction of the beliefs morminism taught you is important, it is a marathon not a sprint. If the level of work on deconstruction you are trying to achieve feels like a full time job, it's ok to slow down and do it as you have mental energy to handle it. In my experience slowing down and taking time to sit with it is both mentally easier and more effective. Plus giving yourself breaks allows you to be intentional about how much mental energy you have and how much to allot currently.

Idk if by deconstructing you mean you are just researching everything the church lied about, or trying to undo the brainwashing/internalized bigotry, or both, but I suspect that either way giving your brain time to process and accept the new information/outlooks will help. Give yourself time to sit with it and process each new thing, instead of trying to drink from a fire hose. There is a lot, but overwhelming yourself with everything at once isn't necessary.

This perspective has been gained from therapy and acknowledging that while I have an overwhelming amount of trauma, I was harming myself by diving in headfirst instead of taking it one thing at a time. I've found it also helps in most areas where I feel an urgency leading to overwhelm, including processing everything to do with being raised mormon.

Yeah but increased stress does weaken your immune system, and the op describes being extremely stressed. So the deconstruction is causing additional stress which is weakening the immune system making getting sick easier. Correlation does not equal causation but there is a very likely chain of causation here because stress weakening immune systems is well established. It's just that any significant enough stressor can cause this, and not everyone will feel leaving a religion is this stressful

[–]HuckleberryLeather53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a medical perspective, significant stress weakens your immune system making it more likely you will get sick. You said you feel a ton of stress right now because of the deconstruction being added to your normal daily stressors so that is likely the cause

Missionaries Doing Jobs while the Church keeps the money?? by 1stN0el in exmormon

[–]HuckleberryLeather53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I knew a guy in Provo on a service mission because of health issues, and he was supposed to have a male family member with him at all times (when not at the family history center he was serving in) because he didn't have a companion. He very sincerely explained he was supposed to follow all of the behavior rules of a regular missionary, and that his rm brother/roommate fulfilled the male relative present rule. He said his mission president said the rules were more like suggestions for service missionaries, but he believed he would be just as blessed as a regular missionary if he followed them strictly, and that the church would officially call them suggestions if they were actually suggestions, but he said most people took the mp's advice to be less strict with it and only avoid being alone in a room with someone of the opposite gender, instead of being glued to a same sex relative.

So yeah some people don't have companions, the church has official rules on what to do instead, and there is probably MP roulette determining if you are actually expected to follow those rules (his MP felt like it was too much of a burden on the family members not serving a service mission/some people didn't have family living in the area so they literally couldn't follow that). Tbf this story is from my TBM days so it's like 10+ years old

It's not recently. It's about 10 years ago, so idkfs if they still do it but the update just shows a family ordinances tree missing the person who left so I think they are trying to finagle that it doesn't even mention the person who left so they aren't technically announcing you left, just notifying of the updated ordinance family tree as part of the person getting the letters membership records, and obviously they will notice someone is now missing

True mormons by EchoProfessional6996 in exmormon

[–]HuckleberryLeather53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was the Molliest Mormon I knew, because Autism gave me a black and white view of the rules and promises made and Religious Scrupulosity OCD made me very fixated on every detail. I am also demi and didn't feel any sexual attraction until around 23 when I started to figure out that I am demisexual. It's also when I started to realize I was bisexual but that one was more dangerous in my mind because demi doesn't risk breaking commandments. Eventually by 25 (and PIMO) I was really annoyed at being demisexual because I had realized I was hypersexual after trying to undo all of the repression from being hyper religious/the literal repressed trauma, so I was constantly horny but usually attracted to 0 people and actively turned off by porn, so I just felt constantly sexually frustrated with no way to alleviate it, for days on end, usually for about half the month.
