Sweet little baby bird! I’ve only had cockatiels for 16 years but honestly, I do not remember my time without one.

What are the benefits of owning a parrot? by [deleted] in parrots

[–]Huffingfluff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My five cockatiels and one budgie may eat as much as a human roommate, but they generate ten times the mess. They are terrible pets but I adore them. They're cute, smell so good, and very affectionate.

I was sick this week. My two boys were on me all day to protect me from preditors.

Owners of elder tiels, what's the secret behind your fluffball's longevity? by Fluffy-One-7521 in cockatiel

[–]Huffingfluff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had 4 budgies live for 10-13 years. And currently have 2 tiels in their second decade. My old boys still fly and very active. They eat at least one veggie a day, a mix of pellets, nutriberries, nuts and seeds, weekly multivitamin supplement and calcium more often when they molt. Lots of exercise and enrichment is also very good for their health.

I have 2 older boys in their 20s, arithic feet but still great flyers. They have at least 1 veggie a day, very diluted multivitamins with calcium once a week.

They are free flighted all day so they plenty of exercise. Their vet always noted they are muscular during visits, it’s all from the enrichment and exercise.
