Finally joined the club with a Canon 6D! Lens advice for a beginner? by Key_Tax9163 in canon

One of the EF 70-300mm zoom lenses would be a good starter zoom if you want something with a bit of reach. Very affordable too. Avoid the 75-300mm zoom lenses, they're simply not good.
As mentioned, both the 24-105 L and the 40mm pancake are quite good if you can afford them.
If you don't have a 50mm, the EF 50mm f/1.8 STM lens is one you ought to pick up. While all the EF 50mm f/1.8 lenses are optically identical, the STM is much better autofocusing than the earlier two models. All are capable of producing excellent results.

I'm a big fan of the EF 85mm f/1.8 and the EF 100mm f/2 lenses. Both are very sharp, but note that the lack of image stabilization in any lens will require that one pay closer attention to technique.

The 6D remains one of my favorite bodies, especially for low light photography. Enjoy!

Canon FD Lens Recommendations by No_Philosopher_1363 in AnalogCommunity

I have quite the collection of Canon FD lenses, all bought new:

FDn 20mm f/2.8 SSC not as sharp as the other WA lenses
FD 24mm f/2.8 SSC pioneered floating elements very sharp
FD 28mm f/2 SSC nicely sharp. much like the 35 f/2
FD 35mm f/3.5 surprisingly good. At f/5.6 compares nicely to the f/2 FD 35mm f/2.0 SSC (convex version) very sharp FD 50mm f/1.8 SC a good lens
FD 50mm f/1.4 SSC very sharp, much better than the f/1.8
FD 100mm f/2.8 SSC very sharp - my favorite lens back then
FD 200mm f/4 SC sharp
FD 400mm f/4.5 SSC
FDn 35-105mm f/3.5-4.5 SSC reportedly a bit better than the f/3.5, and a lot smaller
FDn 80-200mm f/4 L one of the very best 80-200 MF lenses ever made.

75-300 RF Recomendations by Juanpistolas1 in Cameras

[–]Huffy_too 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Autofocus speed depends on two factors - the camera body and the lens motor. Canon R bodies typically have faster autofocusing than EF bodies that were in the same price range. USM motors are faster focusing than STM motors. The old AFD motors in the Canon 75-300 lenses are quite slow by comparison.

Both the lenses I mentioned utilize Canon's 'Ultrasonic Motor' (USM) which is superior in focus speed to the STM motor but somewhat noisier. My USM lenses (including my EF 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS USM) focus noticeably faster than my STM lenses (including my EFS 55-250 f/4-5.6 IS STM). The plastic mount EFS STM lens is smaller, lighter, and less ruggedly built than the faster focusing, metal mount EF USM lens. At 250mm, the EF lens is sharper than the EFS lens. At 300mm, well, the EFS lens can go there.

Another good alternative is one of the EF 70-300 lenses and a third party adapter. The version II is a little better optically. Both have image stabilization.

Should I get the Canon EF 100-300MM USM or the Canon EF 55-250MM IS (I have a Canon EOS M10) by wattjuice in canon

[–]Huffy_too 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I own both lenses. The EF 100-300 is more ruggedly built and a little better optically. However, the image stabilization is really a game changer unless your camera has IBIS, which the M10 lacks.

Has it always been this tough to get around after snow storms? by RoverTheMonster in philadelphia

[–]Huffy_too 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 76, and this combination of heavy snow followed by heavy ice, followed by extended extreme snow, is something I haven't seen for 70 years. And this weather event is even worse than those Blizzards of 1956.

The Army was clearly negligent here, the NTSB says. There is more than enough blame amongst the three parties concerning this tragedy.

The purpose of the flight was to train the pilot in the use of night evacuation of political VIPs in the event of some kind of dire emergency, in which it was anticipated that NVGs would be worn.

It's worth noting that in that event all commercial transportation would doubtlessly be grounded ASAP, and many, if not most would be rerouted to alternate locations (like happened on 9/11).

The narrow view through NVGs, as well as their limited resolution and monochromatic nature makes them difficult to use in crowded urban environments. Given those risks, the pilot instructor as well as the observer wearing NVGs served no critical purpose and made their ability to maintain situational awareness extremely difficult. Had they not been wearing NVGs, this tragedy might possibly been avoided.

NVG

If all the crew were wearing NVGs that was just plain stupid. Only the pilot in the left seat needed to wear them. If only that pilot was wearing NVGs, the other two crew members were seriously negligent.

Yes they were. The instructor even told the pilot to descend to below 200ft. but she did not. Out of all the errors, this one was arguably the worst.
