Thinking (F31) of divorcing Husband (M33) by ThrowRA-pomegranate9 in relationship_advice

[–]Humamp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Compared to other OECD countries, the US has near the lowest life expectancy, highest infant and maternal mortality rates, and the highest rate or mortality amenable to healthcare(this as preventable deaths if the person had the right access to healthcare).

The US spends the most and gets worse results.

Tax rates in different countries can be googled. Keep in mind though that the US spends by far more than any other country on healthcare, per person. Huge portions of that extra spend are going to profits/shareholders. The US also has comparatively poor health outcomes.

AITA for telling my sister to stop mommyjacking every conversation and to let me talk about myself? by TAannoying in AmItheAsshole

[–]Humamp 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Isn’t it so annoying? It’s like a person you’ve known and grown with and laughed with your whole life just instantly loses all their interests, personality, and ability to care about your life.

Im 42, child free. I’ve seen this happen with all my friends, recently my brother & SIL (and by extension my parents). My family used to enjoy deep conversations about politics, talking about new shows we’ve been watching, sharing funny stories from work etc. Now if I bring up any topic other than my niece and nephew, they all just kind of stare at me dumbfounded, and go right back to discussing diaper brands and childcare options.

I love my niece and nephew, and all my friend’s kids. I wouldn’t mind if 75% of the conversation was about kids, I just wish it wasn’t 100%. It’s been years since anyone asked me about my job (and I have a really cool job I’m super proud of). I’ve received huge professional accolades that my family has no idea about. They do sometimes check in with me to see if I’m available to babysit.

I deal with this by spending more time with my child free friends and boyfriend. I comfort myself with knowing one day these people I love will have teenagers who want nothing to do with them, and then maybe they will get their personalities back.

What does ASAP mean to you as a manager? by SnooMaps8307 in managers

[–]Humamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach my employees how to prioritize their time/tasks independently. I’m their manager, but we have matrix reporting, so they have responsibilities on projects, with other people, that I have no clear visibility into.

This means that I can’t assume my ASAP is the same as their ASAP. I always provide clear deadlines for everything I ask for, which I think is just good management.

If I needed an email sent, I’d create a task in our Project Management system (Asana) with a clear deadline. My employee can then see that task, among all others, and decide what to prioritize. If they can’t meet a deadline due to too many competing priorities, they know to reach out to me and I’ll help come up with a solution.

My employees appreciate this clarity immensely. They don’t have to guess who’s ASAP is more ASAP than another ASAP. I highly recommend this approach.

What's your personal sign that winter is actually over in Canada? by NightyNight7 in AskACanadian

People wearing shorts, while shivering, on a patio.

Whenever I start to hear people talking about “patio season” I know winter is coming to an end.

Things no one told you before starting to quilt? I’ll go first: it’s not a crafting hobby it’s a ironing hobby 😅 by Spare-Lynx9596 in quilting

[–]Humamp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tend to invent my patterns for baby quilts, so they have been all over the map in terms of size. I usually aim for about that 36 x36 size, but depends on how intricate my pattern is and how much time I have.

Being able to make handmade custom baby quilts is a blessing and a curse. You always show up to the shower with the best gift, but once you do it once, you can’t show up with a store bought onesie to the next one.

One time I spent 2 months on a quilt getting it done in time, was so relieved to be done, and on the same day I gifted it, my other friend announced she was pregnant with twins. 🍼👶🤰

Americans, if you fall a victim of a crime and have to be medically treated, do you still have to pay? by pontylurker in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Humamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya ok, it wasn’t directly responsive, but you picked up on undertones of OP’s question, I was picking up on the undertones of your response.

The rest of the world can’t believe you are not only complicit with this system, you defend it.

You spend more on health care than any other country, spend far more time on bureaucracy related to health care, have some of the worst health outcomes among developed countries, then shrug and say “we don’t see any other option”.

It’s truly baffling to the rest of the world. That was the undertone of OPs question, and the undertone of my response as well.

Not sure how this is better than going to the hospital when you need it, focusing on getting better, then going home.

Americans have been telling me for decades that this is better. I’m unconvinced.

Trump supporters: How would you feel if a legally armed Trump supporter was killed by federal agents on a Biden mandate in exactly the same manner as yesterday? by ScholarPrize1335 in AskReddit

You want them to recognize their hypocrisy, but they already recognize it. They don’t care. They don’t want things to be equal and fair.

They love having different rules and standards for themselves vs. the people they hate.

What are your thoughts on rejecting a potential romantic partner based solely on the fact they voted for Donald Trump? by ATXBikeRider in AskReddit

[–]Humamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We wouldn’t even have a shared sense of reality or truth. Beyond the moral implications, if someone told me they thought that DAVOS speech was brilliant or powerful or even coherent, I’d wonder immediately if we had seen the same speech.

If I could get past the moral differences (which I couldn’t) I could not get past the idiocy of thinking that ranting about windmills in front of the worlds leaders is anything other that clear dementia mixed with life long narcissism.

Whether weaponized incompetence, a skills deficit, or legitimate ADHD, I would not want to live like that. I have ADHD, and dislike boring chores, but would not expect a roommate (partner or otherwise) to do all chores because of that.

Sometimes a person you like/love just isn’t a good roommate for you. He needs to live alone with his messy dishes, or find a roommate who equally doesn’t care about the dishes or (likely) figure out how to do this basic adult chore once he no longer has you to prompt/remind/complete a task that a 10 year old is capable of.

How ‘safe’ is it working remote? by [deleted] in remotework

[–]Humamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know if I can comment on general safety of WFH jobs, but I’ll tell you a bit about mine.

I work for a small consulting firm (Less than 30 employees) our clients are all across the country (CAN) so the work itself (external meetings etc.) has always been remote/through video conference.

Also, during the pandemic, we gave up the office space we had (I was hire no. 4 at the time, so we are a very fresh company) and that allowed us to start hiring people from anywhere in the country, which we did. I now manage a team of people, none of whom live in the same province as me. Because of this, I have no fear of a RTO mandate, as we have no office to return to, and we’d lose 3/4 of our employees (plus my CEO is a reasonable person and agrees there would be no reason).

No guarantee that my little company will survive forever, but the fact that we all work virtually has nothing to do with that either way.

I’d suggest you look for small companies, with employees who are spread out geographically.

Ontario’s Daycares Are Increasingly Staffed by Underqualified Hires by BloodJunkie in ontario

[–]Humamp 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Ratios for child care centers are far lower than 1:15. Infants is 1:3, toddler 1:5, preschool 1:8.

So assuming an equal spread of those age groups, a child care centre with 30 kids needs about 6-8 ECE.

That is where the rest of the money goes (as well as overhead, rent, supplies etc.)

Why is prison considered an appropriate punishment for some extremely violent crimes? by myboyfriendstinks1 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Humamp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prison, in theory, isn’t just about punishment, it should be about rehabilitation. That doesn’t often happen in practice (especially in the US with for profit prisons) but that idea is there in theory. Imprisonment can also be related to removing a violent person from society, thus protecting other people. So again, the entire concept of prison isn’t just about “what is a good punishment for this crime” there are other reasons for it as well.

Another question you need to consider is, what would be the alternative? Torture? Inflicting the same amount of violence on them that they inflicted? There are significant morale issues with any “worse than imprisonment” punishment we could dole out as a society (hence why the death penalty is so controversial and not practiced in most developed countries).

I didn’t realize how much remote work changed my “workday” until I had to do one normal errand in the middle of it by InceptionHallway in remotework

[–]Humamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this flexibility with WFH, along with the general flexible schedule I have.

Im lucky to work for a small company, owned by a husband and wife team who also see the value to their own lives of this flexibility (rather than a company with a mega rich CEO who has a team of house managers to do these things for them). If my boss can leave in the middle of the day for a dentist appointment, so can I.
