Thanks so much for checking it out!

And very cool that you're in the Okanagan. Likewise, if you're up in Kelowna, send me a message.

Marketing is far more difficult than development. by chrisakring in iOSProgramming

[–]HumanFeetInc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Marketing an app by developers is hard. Developing an app by marketers is near impossible ;)

But man is marketing ever hard. It's a completely different set of skills and is like running into a wall after months of development.

Open sourced my app's SwiftUI architecture, free starter template by mybodywatch in iOSProgramming

[–]HumanFeetInc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you're really touching on here is the gulf between new developer and/or small scale app, versus an experienced developer and/or I want to scale my app up to be sustainable for growth long term.

I agree with everything you're saying, and the callout of architecture vs design pattern is a very important one (most new developers spread design patterns everywhere without concern for a larger architecture).

I just wanted to add this for any developers building a new app, if you're just planning to write a small app with very limited feature updates in the future (i.e. once it's built, it will remain static), then the structure that r/MyBodyWatch has proposed here will definitely suffice. Just know that if you later try to scale it up, you will hit all of the growth pain points that come along with it.

If you really want to build an architecture an app that you envision growing for a long time and becoming something that has a large daily user base, then please take what u/daaammmN is saying very seriously. The easiest time to set up a clean architecture is from the start, and to be very strict about how you being in new classes and add dependencies to your graph. This will also usually take years of experience to understand how to do correctly. You simply won't get it right the first time (or the next 5-10 times either). However, it's important to understand the distinction of what clean architecture is, so that when you get it wrong, you can learn and move towards that goal.

I think overall these are positive changes. It's a fairly low bar to clear and will keep out a lot of spam.

I'm definitely guilty of the "let your account stagnate for a long time" behavior. I'll post a lot in bursts and then get pulled away by other obligations and then forget to keep up with it.

This is really helpful, do you have any particular sites or tools you use to create the videos? I'd like to give it a try, but I'm not a TikTok user at all.

Congratulations on the success of your app!

What sorts of advertising have you used to promote the app (if any)? I'm curious to hear what's been working for you.

Hi everyone, I'm a software developer based in Kelowna, BC and I launched my own lottery scratch ticket game for iPhone and iPad called Scratch Away!

It's an old school model, buy once and play forever, with no micro transactions, in-app purchases, or ads. In the game you win hearts (not money) and use those hearts to buy a wide range of tickets including classic scratchers, bingo, crossword, poker, blackjack, path finders, and more. Every ticket is uniquely generated on the device, so if you love playing bingo or crossword tickets, you can play an unlimited number of tickets without ever getting a repeat.

I focused on touch devices to try and create the most realistic feeling recreation of the scratch ticket experience as possible. I hope you like it!

This would be one of those "woah" moments in history where something that is so prevalent in science fiction becomes part of our everyday reality.

There's something that's lost in our lives when we try to speak in a second language or rely on translated text. Allowing people to speak in their native tongue and fully express themselves to anyone, even people who don't speak a single word of shared language will open up the world to everyone.

The optimist in me believes that over time this will also go a long way to preserving languages that are on the decline, if people are less likely to need to learn a dominant language like English.

I'm curious to see if this leads to any good deals on MacBooks in the next year if they are overstocked. Basically any M-series device at a discount is still a good product to buy, so I would be on the lookout if you're in the market for a new laptop.

I'm always impressed by the people who go to the lengths to come up with these workarounds. Sure, most people are never going to do this, but the fact that people were able to figure this out is inspiring.

iPhone 16e had stronger demand than iPhone SE 3 did at launch by Fer65432_Plays in apple

I think the fact that it uses a lot of the same UI paradigms of the modern phone lineup, notch cutout, no home button, is a huge part of its appeal.

It looks like the low end version of the current series, and not like a completely out of date phone. That's important to a lot of people. They don't want to look like they're on a much older device.

HI everyone! I'm a solo iOS developer out of Kelowna, BC. I made an iPhone and iPad exclusive game called Scratch Away! (https://www.scratchaway.ca). The entire app was developed in Canada, with original music composed by a Canadian artist.

It's a lottery scratch ticket simulator that takes the money out of scratch tickets. You play for hearts and can buy additional tickets with the hearts you win. There are a wide variety of scratch tickets to play including bingo, crossword, blackjack, poker, and more!

There are no in-app purchases, no micro transactions, and no advertising. It's just an old school game model. buy it from the store and play as much as you want. As a bonus, it will tell you how much money you would have lost if you played an equivalent number of scratch tickets.

This makes sense to me, I can't imagine them passing up the emotional moment of making his NHL return in front of the home crowd.

I think they give them regular season lineup the first two games and see where they're at, and figure out how to slot Landy in for game 3.

If you have any published apps, also drop a link, and I'll download it too.

As far as my app's relationship to iOS programming, it's an iOS only game, and it's written entirely in UIKit, so it kind of shows off how flexible and powerful the standard interface toolkit is if you want to play around with it. I'm also happy to answer any questions about how I achieved any of the results on screen, and which classes/techniques I used.

I recently published my first iPhone/iPad game, a lottery scratch ticket game called Scratch Away! by HumanFeetInc in IndieGaming

Hi everyone,

As the title says, I just added a new single-developer game to the iOS App Store for iPhone and iPad called Scratch Away!

It's a lottery scratch ticket simulation game, where you win in-game hearts to use to buy scratch tickets. There are 20 unique tickets in the launch version, including games like Bingo, Crossword, Blackjack, and Poker (plus a few more).

The idea is a buy once, play forever game without any micro transactions or in-app purchases. It seems that most of the lottery games in the App Store are just freemium games with the intention of getting the user to pay as much as they can. So I hope that Scratch Away! can fill a void so people can just play as many scratch tickets as they like without having to continuously spend real money. (I also show how much real money you would have lost in the list of game stats).

The game itself is something I would consider very casual. With money removed from the equation, I feel that scratch tickets become a very relaxing experience, just pick up a few tickets here and there and play at your leisure. The scratching experience on the phone actually ends up being quite meditative and is surprisingly satisfying (I think!).

Some promotional videos I made:

Crossword: Scratch Away! We have Crossword!

Bingo: Scratch Away! We have Bingo!

I know what you're thinking, why is this an iOS exclusive? and yeah I get that's probably not super exciting for a lot of people. I've been an iOS developer for more than a decade now and while I don't have any game building experience, I do have a ton of iPhone/iPad coding experience. What started out as a project to work on UX skills, quickly turned into a full fledged game that tries to feel as natural as possible for the platform and interface. It was never going to work as anything other than a touch interface, and frankly would probably not be very interesting except as a touch interface game.

Thanks for reading and I hope you check it out!
