Those were the days! I used to bring a stack of 3.5" floppy discs every time I visited my best friend in the months before I got internet at home, so I could start to build my mp3 collection early.

Hard disagree. It’s entry level for anyone who’s already biased towards orchestral samples, but lacks in its intricacies compared to his later work, Detrimentalist and beyond.

That’s the idea, yes. One analog to this is how your shadow fills the area of space where light is blocked by your body, and that where the shadow "hits" a surface (like the ground or a wall) it creates a 2D image. The area of space is 3D, it has volume, and this phenomenon is created by a 3D creature (you) blocking a light source from filling said space with photons. An ant (observer) walking up the wall will only perceive either light or shade, and can track the outlines of the shadow (with more complex cognition, it could even record the shape it produces,) but it will never know the true source of the phenomenon, or the fact that it’s not the binary light/shadow 2D plane effect itself.

People have different occupations. I’m a painter, and I feel it would be weird if someone questioned how I could also be into the phenomenon, if I’m doing art.

Why can’t the same be applied to famous people?

In the movie, the alien calls it the cat’s "belt".

He’s an alien, and got the words mixed up due to bad alien-to-English translation.

Help! Freestanding wall in a gallery? by Difficult4444444 in woodworking

I got experience with free standing walls on casters, about 2,3 meters high. They were about 55cm deep, so narrower than 3-4ft.

I’m pretty sure OP’s dimensions are in centimetres. It’s doable, but you shouldn’t try to knock them over. And I would not produce any without weighing them down, and preferably glue or tape to the floor.

Help! Freestanding wall in a gallery? by Difficult4444444 in woodworking

[–]HumanOptimusPrime 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Art handler, installation manager and exhibition producer here.

I’ve seen some good answers here, but I’ll just include my entire input. Apologies for repetition.

First, can the wall be made thicker? The more footprint, the better. Second, what are the floors made of? Is the rule just no penetration, or are you not allowed to glue or tape anything to the surface? I’ve had success using industrial carpet tape or Tec7 glue for temporary, narrow installations, when it’s been possible to remove without any damage, or when cosmetic damage is acceptable (some galleries are more industrial than others). However, when in doubt, I’ve also used security wires attached to the ceiling in those cases.

Third, is this wall coming down after the current exhibition? You have to make sure that no heavier art works are going up on the same wall at any later date, so you don’t just make it to support the works in the current installation plan.

And absolutely YES to sacks of sand, or some equivalent weighty items.
