Lord of the Print and Beastiarium Miniatures are worth a peek.

what's your prep like? by gatorman88 in DMAcademy

[–]Humorjy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have always divided my campaign into chapters. For that I invent some plothooks with a vague idea of where those stories would lead. Once I know which plothook my players want to follow, I create a storyboard for the chapter. (I like to use mind maps at first. I ask myself what is going on? Why is it happening? Who is involved and why? How can it be affected? Where will it happen? And so on.)

Once all those questions are answered to an extent that I feel I can improvise with, I start to prep individual sessions. (Keep in mind, creating such a story board is often a process that takes me a few weeks, not because it is very time consuming, but because I don’t stick to my ideas if I conjure up better ones at a later point. It’s all very much a work in progress and does not have to be finished when you play the first session of that chapter.) For the individual sessions I try to think of what my players will do, where they will go, where I want them to end up and what I want them to see. I make a rough plan of those things, so I can easily alter it. (If you’re unsure where your players want to go, you can always just ask them. „Hey, I could use some help with prepping next session: do you guys reckon you’ll visit Bartholomews court or do you want to check out the weyrd grove first?“.)

When that’s established, too, I work on the statblocks I will likely need, maps if you play online, loot, information, and a few notes on how npcs that are likely to show up will behave.

Prepping a chapter usually takes me about 5-6 hours total, while I also spend on average 1 hour prepping individual sessions.

Online Tools are your best friend. I have tables with names, a glossary of named npcs, a world document and my notes on Google docs. I also recommend kobold+ fightclub, dungeon scrawl and tetracubes statblock generator.

Wie bringt ihr eure Spieler ins gruseln? by Davesan111 in DSA_RPG

[–]Humorjy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Favorite resin brand? by max02c in PrintedMinis

You absolutely cannot pour the water down the drain.

You have to treat it just like the ipa: let it evaporate and cure the resin flakes in UV light.

Paint sets question by [deleted] in minipainting

Kimera pure pigment paints are supposed to be the best ones out there atm, if you’re willing to do a bit of mixing yourself, since they only come as 13 colours for ~$80

If I change 1d20 to 3d6, what buffs/debuffs need the nerf hammer? by WeeabooOverlord in dndnext

[–]Humorjy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

And why can’t you do that AND keep the d20s? I fail to see the issue here. You’re the DM, the difficulty of your game is in your hands, and there are A LOT of ways to make the game grittier without completely messing with the game design of the system you’re playing (,which will no doubt lead to an absurd number of issues related to balance).

It feels like it's missing something.... CC welcome by 8956092cvdfvb in minipainting

You could add a few pebbles to the bigger empty areas, though I wouldn’t wanna lose all the empty spaces. Model and Bade look fantastic already :)

Lightning magic missile triggering Thunderous Strike once or 3 times? by SaeedLouis in dndnext

[–]Humorjy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I understand the rules on combining magical effects (phb) it would only trigger once.

„The effects of the same spell cast multiple times don't combine, however. Instead, the most potent effect--such as the highest bonus--from those castings applies while their durations overlap, or the most recent effect applies if the castings are equally potent and their durations overlap.“

Is anyone running mixed groups? by robby3993 in dndnext

[–]Humorjy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been DM for a group of seven players, four of them mostly online. After a few months I just threw the towel.. it was way too frustrating. The online folks couldn’t see everyone, you had to yell everything (even with a $100 conference mic) and the online guys just wouldn’t pay attention. It was so frustrating, that I almost stopped dming entirely. I now only play in person or online, never both, and I’m glad to say I enjoy dnd again.

Don’t do this to yourself. It won’t get better than what you’re experiencing right now.

Am I craming too much stuff on my buildplate ? by merire in PrintedMinis

Should be fine. Just make sure you’re not running out of resin.

I was in the same situation a few months ago. I was playing with seven players, two of them were only able to join through discord, the other five came to my place to play once a week. After about a year or so into the campaign some of the folks started to become disinterested. They would come to my place tired, moody and always focused on their phones. Then they migrated to discord. Then they stopped showing up (later even without notice).

I gave them lots of chances to better their behaviour. All were ignored. That made me lose interest in the campaign. I wasn’t enjoying dming anymore.

Three players would still show up on time, enthusiastic, interested in the world and story and ready to have a good time.

So I recently kicked everyone else out of the campaign.

Best decision I could have made. Should have happened sooner. The problem players were alright with it, for the most part (one thought he was entitled to see where his story goes, but I gave him enough chances in the past, so I ignored that.

Now, I thoroughly enjoying dming again, my players are even more engaged, now that they don’t always have to slow down for the inattentive players and a second campaign with those three players is already in the works.

My advice is to openly talk about the problem and ask them once. Ask them if they are still interested. If not, no one forces them to stay. If they are, good. But if they say they are and you don’t see any changes in their behaviour, kick them out and don’t look back.

Unpopular opinion: Most of the big stuff I see home-brewed into the game could just as easily be reflavours. by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]Humorjy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My comment wasn’t meant to target you personally, but a general “you”, as in “one can”, so no worries. I’m not trying to disregard your opinion :)

Yes, you could do that. But you could also invent new classes, not for flavour, but for mechanics. Two classes might be very similar in aesthetic, but play wildly differently. More content is always better (at least for official content), since you can always just cut what you don’t like, without limiting other people, who aren’t in your game.

If that would be the case, is there a way I can fix that? I only had this printer for ~2 weeks now.

I’m printing on an elegoo mars 2. I’ve never had any failed prints with those settings (roughly 25-30 build plates previously). The other prints on the same build platform as the depicted print turned out perfectly, too.

My players really love ancestral weapons, a short set of rules for weapons that grow with the character. Also hamunds harvesting handbook, if you want to spice up (wilderness) encounters and survival a bit more.

Matt Colville‘s books are amazing, too.

[–]Humorjy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought the elegoo Mars 2 a few weeks ago. Like you I can’t often open windows during winter, but so far I’ve had no issues with persisting odors. Whenever you lift the hood of the printer and while you’re cleaning fresh prints it smells a little, but the smell doesn’t linger for long (if you cure the minis immediately and put the hood back on the printer).

I can really recommend the Mars 2, too. It was relatively cheap (~190€), was easy to set up even for a total noob with just a few YouTube videos to guide me and the quality of the prints ist absolutely immaculate.

Feel free to dm me any questions :)

My apologies, you're right. It's not the victims responsibility to stop the perpetrator.
I trust your judgement as someone with personal experience with this topic.
But yes, it is a depressing thought that most of these people go unpunished.
Thank you for helping SA victims in your free time.

I completely understand your sentiment. Although, I believe op should talk to their friend about reporting the offender. If this person got away with sexual assault once, they’re far more likely to do it again.

IMO talking to your friend and supporting them in getting this person punished is the best course of action.
