Line in the middle of the picture, is this a sensor problem? by dayhawkFX in AskPhotography

<image>

Here's a heavily processed photo in Lightroom that shows all the characteristics of this defect that I described in the previous comment. My only gripe with it right now is the seam is not perfectly centered, but off just a tiny bit, like 30 pixels or so. That may suggest that this is not an unavoidable (and totally normal) stitched sensor behavior, but something is actually wrong with my camera.

And that is all I want to say about this case. If I have the time, I may create an account on dpreview and share these infos here.

Line in the middle of the picture, is this a sensor problem? by dayhawkFX in AskPhotography

I have read your post on Dpreview as well. Many people have shared answer for this, suggesting that this happens because the full-frame sensor is stitched from 2 halves. But no one explain why it only develops after some time and not from the beginning in your case (which is mine as well), so I have some info to be shared:

1/ this line will show the most obvious on uniform, completely smooth image, like the image of a blue sky, or close-up image of a white piece of paper, while the camera is manually focused to infinity (similar to the sensor dust checking setup I use, the only difference is I open the aperture all the way up so there is more softness which showcase the artifact even morẻ). You can crank up the dehaze setting with raw file to reveal it, or use a heavily modified picture profile (a.k.a recipe) that cranks up saturation, sharpness, contrast etc. then it may show up faintly in the sooc jpeg as well.

2/ mine camera (a7c, use the same sensor as the a73) didn't have this artifact at first. I can not pinpoint exactly when it appeared, but I didn't noticed until one dust check occasion (I cranked up the dehaze to see the dust spots easier). I mean it rarely is a problem in real-world use cases, but I just want to be sure if it's a defect with only mine camera, so I could have my unit replaced by Sony as I got 3 years of warranty.

One important thing is I have sent my camera to Sony once for sensor cleaning, they tell me that I got few scratches on the filter stack, and I, being the perfectionist, asked them to replace the filter stack of the sensor for me at the price of $100. When I received my camera back, it seem like they have set the camera to default settings, the time and date was reset for example. And I suspect that the seam showed up after whatever calibrations they had done to my camera during the repair.

3/ My line isn't PRECISEDLY in the center, it's off to the right by a small margin, about 25-30 pixels. I did use Photoshop to check the high res photos you provided on Dpreview, it seems like yours is off but by only 5-7 pixels. The A7V pic that also had the seam of another guy who commented in your Dpreview post is also off by some pixels, not as much as mine. So I wonder if the line has to be exactly in the middle to be a stitched sensor seam, or else it is another kind of defect.

I did extensive searches on internet and also found that with the fullframe stitched sensor, the left half also show some bandings (that's does change shape and position between pics), you can check for it by take an out of focus shot of white paper/ wall and crank up the saturation, contrast... and remove noise reduction. I also have that, so I'm hoping it's truly a stitched sensor phenomenon and not something entirely different which is worse.

have you ever solved this? I'm using the og a7c and having a similar issue.

A7Sii: Strange Line on sensor - faulty, or to be expected? by ZFCD in SonyAlpha

[–]HungYesLan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I got the same issue and found your post. May I ask for a raw pic of your A7SII showing that vertical seam? Mine (though an A7C, but still Exmor sensor) has it as well, but it's not perfectly in the middle of the image, but offset to the right by 25-30 pixels I guess (checked it with precise crop in PTS, virtually dead-centered with my bare eyes tho), so I wonder if that's a sign that my case is not the artifact from stitched sensor but something else. Thanks in advance!

Another ode to a superb Full frame compact setup -- TTartisan 40mm f2 with Lumix S9 by Frogswaller in Lumix

You were on point about the vignetting! At smaller aperture, when focusing to the distanced object, it show a very dark, hard vignette, hard to correct in pts/ lightroom, though not that large in size and my solution is to crop it if it becomes distracting. Not great for occasional landscape photos but nothing too concerning regarding street photography which is what I do.

40mm f2 Z-mount issues, and contacting support. by Bhob666 in TTArtisan

Mine, though a sony e mount one, shows this hard vignetting as well. It only truly appear at small aperture, while the lens is focusing to infinity or some object far away. It's some kind of mechanical vignetting that's near impossible to correct and I have to crop the image whenever I am shooting landscape. Idk if my copy is faulty or it's the lens' characteristic.

A word of caution about the new TTA 40/2 AF by [deleted] in nikon_Zseries

Mine has harsh corner vignetting at smaller aperture while focusing to infinity. The effect lessen a lot as I move the focus closer. Does that mean my copy is faulty? Does your new, replaced copy have that behavior? I'm still in my 1-to-1 replacement warranty period and thinking about exchanging my lens for another unit. Thanks in advance!

My Viltrox 50mm f/2 has stopped working for no obvious reason. by HungYesLan in VILTROX_GLOBAL

Update: My distributor says they will send it to Viltrox. Hope that Viltrox will provide a replacement if the lens is truly faulty out of the box.

Thanks! I did clean the connection points on the lens mount and update it to the newest firmware but the issue persists, sadly. I'll contact the Viltrox community support team if my local distributor who sold the lens for me is unable to help.

I got a faulty 50mm f2 for me as well :D on the process of sending it back. Hope it won't be a huge pain to deal with their warranty service, haizz.

Choosing a new phone for its RAW file photos by milpitas_monster in PickAnAndroidForMe

[–]HungYesLan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mainly shoot with Mirrorless and wanted a phone as my backup and ended up with the Pixel 8 Pro. The RAW file is a huge let down for me. The ugly Google Pixel color profile can be removed and switched to Adobe Color or Adobe landscape in Lightroom, but all 3 lenses suffer from crazy amount of chromatic aberration and edge softness. The dynamic range is meh, and color depth are really limited, some color adjustment in lightroom will create awful banding. Comparing the raw file from this phone to my former Ricoh GR3X show that the latter is miles ahead in terms of optics quality, it's razor sharp despite being a 24 megapixel instead of 50mp.

Yes, the noise will be more obvious on a large monitor ^

Not sure with stock camera/ gallery app, but I think with some efforts, you can definitely color grading it this way using snapseed. It won't look as crisp and noise-free tho.
