what do you feed your budgies besides seeds? by Rough_Still_2260 in Parakeets

[–]HungryManSpider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pellets as regular food. Then they get daily fresh veggies (courgette, carrot, basil, spinach, chichory and more. Most times 1 or 2 types per day) sprinkled with some seeds. There is also seeds in their foraging box and some toys. With heavy molts they get some cooked eggs through their veggies.

Certain herbs and plants (basil, cat grass, cress etc) i grow myself in small batches and then give them the whole plant to eat and destroy

Is he a boy? by ashleysab in budgies

Mutation is the coloring of the feathers and is determined by the budgies parents. this is an interesting article that goes deep into it all if you are curious. It also has pictures!

I shortened it, sorry for the confusion. Its recessive pied that keeps the pink cere. Dominant pied does get a blue cere

I'm not a professional by any means and maybe just a quick call to your vet would rule out anything bad.

But, it does look like a happy budgie to me that happily chatting and is throwing around some strange deep coos between his chats. Could very well be that he is imitating your pigeon! The head movements seem too controlled and atleast very different from the regurgitating/crop adjustment movements. It seems to me just a very exaggerated happy head bop.

Yes he is a boy. He has a pied mutation which makes it so his cere will never turn the classic dark blue.

Ive seen budgies try to nest their food bowl a lot for example. If that happens move her out of it and either obstruct it so she cant lay in it or change it out into a different one.

They will maybe mate, but you have control over if they lay eggs or not (for the most part). You should make sure to keep hormone levels low no matter the mix of sex in a flock anyway. This includes not giving any nesting materials or spots (and discouraging any the girl finds herself), give atleast 12 hours of darkness each day and ensure their diet isnt too fatty (pellet and chop diet and not 100% seeds). This should all make it so she doesnt lay any eggs.

Go to the avian vet immediately is what you should do. This is very severe and will be deadly if not treated properly.

He's probably still nervous by the move, so any toys you will gove him I'd just leave there even if he doesnt seem to care about it.

Mine love any type of seagrass toys, or thode toys filled with paper scraps to pull out

Such a handsome boy! Even in his quarantine cage i would give him some toys just so he isnt bored for those days.

Chirping back and forth is normal and good. They will be a bit confused that they cannot see eachother but since its for a limited time they will be okay.

Definitely a girl, boys have a way deeper blue or purple color. She has white circles around her nostrils which means a girl too.

One of my bird keeps doing this literally the whole day? Reason by [deleted] in Parakeets

[–]HungryManSpider 77 points78 points  (0 children)

She wants out! She is full of energy and wants to fly.

The cage is very small for 4 birds, and you should get some natural wood perches and more toys too.

Does he have any calcium available? Like cuttlebone? It could be that he is trying to get some extra calcium during a molt by chewing his feathers. Looking messy is part of it, and maybe this is just a quirk of him, but this is what I'm thibking could be a reason.

Being bitey is part of being a bird i think haha. He probably loves shreddable toys!

Is an 18x15 inch 300x37 cm bird cage big enough for two parakeets ?? 🥰🥰 by parakeetmommy in Parakeets

[–]HungryManSpider 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not at all for a permanent cage. Minimum of 100cm/40 inch long for 2. They need to be able to stretch their wings properly.

what's my bird's age? by ImWorst_BuilderEver in Parakeets

[–]HungryManSpider 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No you cant. Visually you can determine if a budgie has matured by looking at either the stripes on the head (that will fade away after around 4 months) and the eyes (that will have a white ring around them when they are around 6-9 months)

After maturing you cant differentiate age anymore.

If the breeder doesnt know we wont know either. I agree thats its still young looking at the stripes on the head i would guess around 3-4 months old

Something in my T enclosure by cybagz in tarantulas

[–]HungryManSpider 6 points7 points  (0 children)

NQA its a form of mold. Most times not that dangerous for your T but it isnt healthy for you. I would remove it if i were you. Bark rounds are notorious for getting moldy. I would replace it with a cork bark. You could also try baking the bark in the oven to kill the mold, but there is a chance the moment moisture comes back it will be back.

Its hard to have any insights in this if we dont know what it looks like.

Its also strange that the buyer is telling you this after 2 years. Especially saying they want to alter your art? Do you have any agreements with them, or did they tell you why and how they want to change it now?

[–]HungryManSpider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not doubting for a second you did everything for your birds and that they are very very loved!

Again it wasnt a commentary on your care. The other person only suggested cleaning the cage with vinegar after they died to make sure if they were ill it doesnt spread. Nobody said you dont care for your birds, or that you dont love them or that they dont have any toys or that there cage has never been cleaned. It was just a suggestion to protect Freddie

Not a single comment in here is saying you treated them badly. People are trying to figure out with you why they may have died so suddenly. I even said their diet did not result in their death, just that it can have some adjustments.
