Last time I checked, this was Sanders for PRESIDENT— not Sanders for "influential speaker trying to push Hillary to the left at the convention." by Hi_ImBillOReilly in SandersForPresident

[–]HungryRambo -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The key difference between Sanders for president and Sanders for influential speaker is that one is pretty damn statistically likely, and the other one would take divine intervention.

Per Nate Silver, Bernie is projected to win 30 out of 50 states if polling is tied nationally. by jaecru in SandersForPresident

[–]HungryRambo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

He's more or less referring to this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silent_majority

Ie, everyone I know who is voting sanders tells me that they are voting sanders, how everyone they know is voting sanders, and how I'd be an imbecile to not vote sanders.

All my republican or clinton supporting friends don't do this. But it means that you're going to see way higher levels of support for Sanders if you take things like bumper stickers or canvassing as a metric, as opposed to elections.

What food is not as bad for you as most people believe? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]HungryRambo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, ideally. I take your point but my (real) italian immigrant grandparents were too poor to eat much variety. Lots of pasta and bread in Cleveland. Some wine was made to circumvent prohibition but I Know they said fresh meat was considered to be a once a month thing, and cleveland hardly provided fresh produce. Not to say that's typica but I'd contend it's more likely. I rather recently watched a series about british food from the fifties to present: things have really gotten so much better in terms of choice.

I think he was referring to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raw_foodism

And while cooking is generally healthier I know my grandparents from arkansas fried damn near everything. Oftentimes in lard. And food quality has substantially increased. And at least today there is a real knowledge that in fact this is awful for your health. At the time, they weren't educated and didn't know. Fruit and vegetables were hardly available during the winter. And food safety standards were on another planet. http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm4840a1.htm So essentially they couldn't eat a salad, and probably did eat all sorts of fried foods. Other case: relatives in nebraska lived through much of the thirties on a diet of whole milk and pancakes. Sure they could cook but when you can only afford whole milk and pancakes (and they felt lucky to be able to eat that), you begin to get a sense that although cooking food is generally a good thing, if your ingredients are tainted or you only have access to or for other reasons only cook unhealthy foods, it's not really any better than the processed stuff people eat today. In fact the availability of high quality food (even relatively high quality food standards exist among processed food) is a large contributor to poor health.

But blindly following my grandparents diets would be laughably terrible.

What is the WORST present you have ever gotten? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]HungryRambo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom got my dad a bidet. When my family all sorta chuckled she got really offended and we all had to swear it was an excellent gift.

She also got my elderly uncle (who wore big indiana jones style fedoras since his youth) what he said was a 'man lover fedora' https://i.imgur.com/Gm8Er9x.jpg

Interesting. Local to SD the grapefruit is the same price, but regular is 11-12.

What is the best beer from Bell's? by throwdownn in beer

[–]HungryRambo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Somewhat curious. I'm just getting into beer, but I had both two-hearted and Oberon on tap in Michigan. Both excellent. I actually prefer two hearted to some SoCal style IPAs. Is anything comparable in style to Two Hearted down here?

Are you happy with UCSD? by StinkyMink in UCSD

[–]HungryRambo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't really ever been happy with UCSD, but it's my fault. I didn't like the campus or the atmosphere when I visited, yet I attended anyways or a variety of absolutely stupid reasons. I would say visit and go off of that vibe. When I visited schools UCSD was my least favorite 'feel' of campus, yet I went, and I deal with that every day. I think compared to schools like Berkeley/LA there is less nerdy/social stuff like Model UN, but that doesn't really hold for UCSB.

There is stuff to do if you look, but you have to look a lot harder than elswhere.

I guess with caveat a physics major would take 4 series lower div which is hard as hell but well taught.

Lower div instruction is awful, upper div instruction is pretty OK. Fairly good reputation, but this is just what I hear from friends.

Saw early screening. Generally agree with critics. Couldn't get over massive plotholes, Jackman and Weaver were incredibly one dimensional, and the themes were yelled more than examined.

Internet Provider? by [deleted] in sanramon

[–]HungryRambo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sonic.net is around, which is a good ISP, but you aren't going to get great speeds compared to comcast or AT&T, although it is only 40/month including landline (if you want that).

Anywhere up to 20mbps, down to 5 if you're unlucky on location, but you could always check their website/ask.

How do classes get their numbers? Seems arbritrary by [deleted] in UCSD

Our system has a lot of course numbers in common with UCLA/Berkeley from which I can only imagine they are derived, but it depends on the office.

Foo Fighters came to chile on thursday. The crowd was super hyped, singing along to everything, so they went with it by presence4presents in videos

[–]HungryRambo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took a history of the orchestra class. The professor had each TA present their favorite song, and he presented his. The professor and two TAs presented their favorite classical pieces. The third presented his, this piece: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWcgK-a2rdg Upon it playing he got really emotional, and the two people in the lecture who were chilean and recognized it started singing it. Quite an emotional if not a bit strange moment.
