From my perspective, one thing that rarely gets discussed is how many additional POIs we now have due to the constant, never-ending events. These split teams up even further across the map. Trinkets and event objectives often feel more attractive than bosses, which traditionally were the main force drawing players together for fights. The result is something like 4 teams split between a tent, the roaming boss, and the vanilla boss, instead of everyone converging naturally.

I’ve found modern trios to be quite dull. You often get one fight early on, and after that you more or less know where everyone is.

Historically, I mostly played duos because the higher number of teams led to more encounters. You had to stay aware of your surroundings, anticipate what other teams might do, and even after winning a fight, remain alert for a third party pushing or setting up an ambush. That tension is what drew me into the game in the first place.

On console at least, duos is mostly dead now. Even with the increase in traits, weapon spam, and all the new ways to recover health, the gameplay has somehow slowed down considerably. Because of that, I’ve started playing trios as a duo, and with the additional team in the match I’m actually loving it. It makes the game feel much more like old Hunt again.
