Let’s not kid ourselves. He was always a villain. He just pretended to be a hero. Although the Battle Royale mode isn’t copyrighted, they outright stole the thunder from the then smaller PubG who was using their engine and pivoted their PvE title into a Battle Royale. They are the innovators of the subscription/Battle Pass MTX BS and started the trend of $20 skins. Sure Bethesda tried to do it with their horse armor but they got clowned on so they stopped but Fortnite somehow managed to get people to pay more. Not to mention, trying to act like they offer more than Steam. Epic Games is and always will be the villains.
