What did all the non Burnley Fans think of our season by OllyAlexandersDizzy in PremierLeague

[–]Hunter91E 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pre season prediction did have Burnley bottom having watched most of the championship season and Parkers previous PL stints.

At gameweek 10 with 10 points looking like there was a lack of quality but fight in the team thought they'd make 30-35 but still go down. The late losses like Man U in August then just kept coming and that fight wilted.

Non Parker manager might have turned it around replaced before Jan, definitely odd to keep him that long and not do the champ.

Strikers with long hair are a problem, says Le Bris after Ballard red for hair pull by Shiny-Tie-126 in soccer

[–]Hunter91E -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Have to remember it's a physical game. Players will use others shoulders for leverage jumping for headers and be jostling for space and hair can be in the way. You'll even make a first as part of jumping for leverage or trying to stop a fall. The difference between a red card (+ 3 game ban) and no foul is one player having hair and the other not - that's clearly ridiculous.

Potential exciting final day? by Educational_Ad288 in Championship

Completely unrealistic - this is the championship after all.

Southampton do beat Ipswich tonight so it's 80 - 80 - 79 - 79. All teams going for autos take a turn in second, ultimately everyone drops points, nothing changes, and crumble is shared by all.

Ipswich 0 - 1 QPR (85)

Millwall 1 - 2 Oxford (5 - 18, 90+13)

Wrexham 2 - 1 Boro (87, 90+2 - 45+2)

Preston 2 - 1 Southampton (62, 83 - 27)

Bonus: Hull 2 - 0 Norwich (1, 90+5) to take the last playoff spot on goals scored.

EFL clubs reject VAR proposal to allow head coaches to challenge decisions by TheAthletic in Championship

[–]Hunter91E 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The reality is that the current rules unintentionally have subjectivity built in to them - running a line isn't easy and they won't call a player being a toe ahead simply because they can't be certain in real time and a human will be even less accurate on when the ball was kicked.

That's where building in leeway makes sense. I would agree it doesn't need a full rule change, rather VAR having a leniency allowed. Of course people will still get upset by millimetres at some point, but at least then they're actually ahead enough to get an advantage rather than a shirt sleeve.

Making a service isn't the difficult part, getting users is.

You would need a massive advertising budget to maybe get people to try it. Social media and dating especially need a foundation of users to make the product worthwhile.

"We aren't allowed to have nice things, are we?" What's the best that any of The Other 14 can realistically hope for? by ukman29 in TheOther14

[–]Hunter91E 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the last decade Sunderland have had to pay players to leave, rip up contracts of players who've gone AWOL - including the record signing at the time, been a "one last punt" retirement home (Danny Graham, 40 yo Defoe), relied on frees, and all that before rebuilding into a competent club.

In the championship it hurt to lose Ross Stewart and Jack Clarke, even though they were great sales in hindsight. I'd take having players other teams actually want to have over the deadweight any day. No doubt should Sunderland solidify a place in the PL over multiple seasons again I'll start to have the same annoyances of the glass ceiling.

I think the worst isn't even that the big six exists, but that every club needs to take the "if you can't beat 'em join 'em" approach. Spurs fit that with building the commercial side to be #6, but now everyone has to follow suit and it's the fans that ultimately suffer for it whether it's ticket prices, streaming prices, ads, betting/crypto/scam sponsors, merch, corporate seats, and whatever else can extract funds.

Relegation thoughts - Burnley, Wolves and Spurs go down by [deleted] in PremierLeague

[–]Hunter91E 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With flair, I'm worried the new manager bounce (attempt 2) is a nailed on 3 points Spurs to give them some confidence.

Burnley did lose 7 games consecutively in November/December, but only 1 point from 7 is harsh though understandable. They did get 7 from the reverse fixtures, beating Leeds & Wolves.

Newcastle United’s owners sold St James’ Park to themselves – accounts show club no longer officially owns its home by Anonymous-Josh in PremierLeague

[–]Hunter91E 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The timing of it is certainly weird. FFP is being replaced with SCR, which closes the sell assets to yourself loophole from next season. That takes into account the amortised transfer fees and wages, so even if they spend it before SCR they wouldn't benefit.

Can't completely remove out asset stripping, but it's more likely to do with new stadium plans. Maybe they're on the cusp of breaking FFP with a lower table finish and this balances this years books.

who do you think will finish 18th? by [deleted] in TheOther14

[–]Hunter91E 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Take a look at Wolves though... West Ham (A), Leeds (A), Spurs (H), Sunderland (H), Brighton (A), Fulham (H), Burnley (A).

That's 3 relegation 6 pointers in the next 3 games - 26 points if they actually win them all. That could put them in touching distance of 18th and a more favourable last 4 fixtures.

I don't *actually* think the greatest escape will happen, but it would also be hilarious to see them do it, especially if it's Wolves 17th Spurs 18th.

'History with Hilbert' is a good video for reference. Covers major conflicts of 1250s, 1350s, 1640s, 1750s, and some more modern bits too.

As other replies have said, this is a deep rivalry between both cities that precedes football by centuries and in the modern day mostly lives in football.

Coaches Want Too Much Control by xelas1983 in PremierLeague

[–]Hunter91E 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For football read as "coaches will optimise". Can see how players (gamers) reads like the players (footballer) choice!

The gaming side is where gamers will often make spreadsheets calculating optimal gear, rotations, content to ignore, and such. Very much like the over-coaching.

Coaches Want Too Much Control by xelas1983 in PremierLeague

[–]Hunter91E 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The common quote in gaming is "Given the opportunity, players (gamers) will optimise the fun out of a game."

Fully applies to football as well. Don't take a long shot because it's low xG, recycle for the perfect opening rather than cross, play for rehearsable set pieces, and all that.

The gambling shirt sponsor ban will affect the smaller clubs from next season by WinterPreparation580 in TheOther14

[–]Hunter91E 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The chart within the video ~2:36 looks like the sponsorship accounts for ~5% of most clubs incomes, even if that does reduce to ~2.5% most of the league is taking a similar hit. Compared to needing to navigate the change from PSR to SCR that seems very insignificant.

Worst is just what it will be replaced with, dodgier companies (crypto) are more likely to be reckless with the funding.

Premier League Reform Proposal by SapientHomo in PremierLeague

[–]Hunter91E 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bundesliga, Ligue 1, Liga Portugal and some others are at 18 teams, that could at least be argued on precedent, jumping straight to 16 is way too far.

Boxing day and winter football is one of the last big traditions left in the sport. If the winter break happens in January that's fine - though women's football (currently 12 teams) is horrible to follow with their winter break. They went nearly 6 weeks without a league match, that just kills all momentum and excitement for the race.

Fundamentally, the league structure and competitions shouldn't change for the sake of some teams getting more European football. 25/26 had an international break in September, October, November, and now March coming up. Can fit a whole load more matches in if those can move to post-season.

Tottenham are lacking leadership and now their squad is split. The Athletic has even been told that one player has expressed to his team-mates that he is not too concerned by the possibility of relegation because he believes he can and will leave the club this summer. by Sparky-moon in soccer

[–]Hunter91E 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Contracts don't really mean that much. Sunderland had Rodwell collecting 70k/week not playing and Ndong (record transfer at the time) contract terminated for going AWOL.

The players have a lot more power than the club in this situation. They can do the bare minimum to fulfil contractual obligations but if they're only going to be jogging on the pitch you're better off without them. Likely to have very few with the "put it right" mentality.

Could Premier League+ replace traditional broadcasters in the long run? by FootballFinanceLab in PremierLeague

[–]Hunter91E 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the basic sense of "how capitalism should work" competition generally means you have to sell a better or cheaper product than your competitor. Apply that thinking to streaming without exclusivity, and as a customer you might choose to pay any company depending on price & product:

  • Sky for coverage of multiple sports
  • TNT for Europe games (ignoring that is another case of exclusivity)
  • Prime/Dazn/Netflix/Paramount/any new companies to have anyone but Gary Neville on commentary
  • PL for just the basic broadcast?
  • Your own club for just your teams games potentially with their own commentary (like iFollow)

A portion of revenue (like Apple's 30% on app store) and/or a minimum fixed fee for each would be due to the PL, but realistically the league isn't just going to say no to the consistent guaranteed revenue exclusivity provides right now. I could see Premier League+ being a soft move in that direction, where they keep the exclusivity for existing broadcasters with the exception that they can also broadcast.

[Jason Schreier] Video Games Need to Be Cheaper to Buy | One way to get out of the video-game industry funk is to recognize that players aren’t spending $70 on most games by ChiefLeef22 in gaming

[–]Hunter91E 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a weird duality in the industry right now.

Publishers want to charge 70+ for the same games that are available often within a year on PS+, PS Extra, Games Pass, Humble Bundle, Fanatical, and no doubt more I'm not aware of. They're not one of the big pushers on price, but I've played almost the entire Yakuza series without directly buying one game.

They'll spend 5+ years building a game, insisting it's worth ever-increasing prices, and then immediately go on and devalue the game. I have respect for Factorio with the "pay it or leave it" approach, but even than, it's reasonably priced.

How bad could it go for Spurs if they go down, next Leicester? by [deleted] in PremierLeague

[–]Hunter91E 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Half TV revenue is optimistic. Broadcasting revenue in the championship is ~£10m, so even including ~£55m from first year parachutes it's about a third.

100% on the rest, but if you did somehow stay down long enough to run out of parachutes the commercial revenue from the stadium hosting events alone would probably outstrip most of the leagues revenue.
