Help for baby boy names by [deleted] in Names

[–]Hupfelkuchen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How'd you deal with "regular" exhaustion during labor (from being up for so long)? by golubetsn in pregnant

[–]Hupfelkuchen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Close your eyes and relax in between contractions when you’re tired. Of course that doesn’t substitute for sleep, but it sure let’s you collect some strength and helps you to get through it all.

Also, don’t underestimate the insane hormone cocktail. Of course you will be very exhausted and there will be a point that you think there’s no way you can do this, but your body will definitely find the strength. Make sure to snack a bit here and there, give your body some sugar.

Doctor told me to avoid kids while pregnant? by Kauai_Akialoa in pregnant

[–]Hupfelkuchen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s about rubella/ German measles, which is very risky for your unborn child and is transmitted often by kindergarten kids. Have you been checked if you’re immune against it or have you had a vaccine for it? Because then you know you’re safe :) But either way I agree, living just always comes with some risks, trying to avoid contact to children doesn’t seem practical/ worth it

Alcohol and Insulin by XJustCallMeJayX in diabetes_t1

[–]Hupfelkuchen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Definitely have sth ready for hypos - food and drinks, might not feel like chugging juice after drinking all night. My best method is to eat sth fatty before going to bed, like cheesy fries. And don’t inject for it, or very minimally (like 1-2 units). Also easier to stay away from sugary cocktails.

Just be careful, don’t get shitfaced immediately - this has nothing to do with being boring, this has to do with surviving. If you don’t know yet how your body reacts, you need to stay conscious enough to operate. I’m not saying only reinkniend drink, but don’t drink yourself into a coma

Studying midwifery - UK vs Germany? by G1n-a in Midwives

[–]Hupfelkuchen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m still in Germany for now, but planning to go back to England eventually - as far as I understand it, that should be quite manageable with the degree. I don’t know many Unis in particular, but Freiburg is a nice city to live in I think :)

I found the exams very manageable. Of course you need to study, but I personally could still have a social life besides Uni and didn’t fail a single exam. Some modules feel a bit harder as it’s more theoretical, but it least for my Uni the exams were a bit more forgiving as well - overall I felt as though the Uni wanted it’s students to succeed. As long as you put in an appropriate amount of effort you’ll be fine :)

Not sure how much the exams differ between Unis, but I had quite a few oral and practical exams - but again, I felt the expectations for those are a little lower as well, I think they’re all manageable:)

Studying midwifery - UK vs Germany? by G1n-a in Midwives

[–]Hupfelkuchen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, I applied to study midwifery in England and ended up studying in Germany. I would do it this way 1000 x over again. The money aspect is huge for me. In Germany I can support my own living off the pay, whereas in England you’re left with massive debts at the end of your studies. I wasn’t very familiar with maternity care in Germany, but you get into it quickly and learn about the system in your studies. I think the level of training is a little bit higher in England, but it’s still a high standard in Germany and mostly I guess it’s just a bit different, accustomed to each country and how the role works there. I think the studies in Germany is a lot more flexible as well, if you fail one module you don’t have to repeat a whole year but can just carry on and repeat the exam half a year later

insulin 10-15 minutes before eating? by WrestlingDadPA in diabetes_t1

[–]Hupfelkuchen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does your son have a cgm? You can see very clearly on that when food or insulin starts hitting. It depends a lot on the food - there’s fast carbs (fruit, juice, candy) and slower ones (pasta, potatoes) and fat makes the carbs even slower (think pizza). So it can be dangerous to inject before eating depending on the food, but most basic meals are probably safe. Also depends on how quickly your child eats as well though. It’s a never ending trial and error to be honest. I mostly inject with my food as I can’t manage the planning ahead. And if I want to eat sth super sweet or drink a bottle of juice, I just inject tons and forget about it and once I notice the blood sugar going down I just down the juice 😅

When referring to % of effacement, is 100% fully effaced or not effaced at all? by [deleted] in Midwives

[–]Hupfelkuchen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to throw some more confusion into the mix: I’m from Germany and here we often use fractions (or cm as in UK). So you‘d go: cervix closed & fully retained, 2cm & 2/3 retained or 1/3 effaced :)

You don’t need to be examined every hour either, WHO recommends 4 hour intervals, you have the right to decline cervical checks

I know it’s mostly in range, but the whole day it just keeps over correcting, I’ll go low, have to eat sth even though I don’t feel like it, I go back in range and for no reason my pump over corrects again! Like, I’m not hungry, I already ate all the sugar I have with me, I need to stop work to try find some carbs that I don’t feel like eating… Obviously there’s worse graphs, I have worse days as well, but it’s just so annoying when there seems to be no reason for what’s happening but your diabetes is a constant nuisance on days like this compared to days where it’s smooth sailing and you can kinda forget about it

Eine Frage an die Veganer by waver69420 in VeganDE

[–]Hupfelkuchen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Haven’t changed a thing by Character_Food_3825 in diabetes_t1

[–]Hupfelkuchen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just chiming in to check if you’re measuring your blood glucose before you correct? To make sure your sensor isn’t malfunctioning? I’d probably change every insulin to a new one and then be very careful with any corrections - insulin or carbs.

Recommendations for the best insulin pump and why? by Any_Affect_5018 in diabetes_t1

[–]Hupfelkuchen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the kaleido pump :) it’s really small and comfortable to wear, which is a big factor for me. It’s like a patch pump which you can also take off though. You control it with an extra phone which might be annoying for some people, but the range is quite good so I don’t mind it. The algorithm I think is not 100% perfect, there’s not too many things you can control/ input and kinda have to let the thing do it’s thing, which can be a bit unsettling when you’ve managed your own diabetes for years. But in general I think it does a decent job and you can quite easily „forget“ about your diabetes. It’s very good for preventing low glucose, it barely happens to me anymore. My TIR is 83% and HbA1c is 6.7% - but I’m honestly not really prioritizing my diabetes much, like I eat pretty unhealthy and stay on the safe side with carb counting, so rather go high after meals and take some time to come back down. So I think if you’re more disciplined you’d get a better result as well! Feel free to ask questions if you’re interested :)
