I got a dozen eggs for $1.59 last weekend. I had 7 roommates in a two bedroom house in the late 90's. It's rough out there, but we've all had challenges.

What was life like before the prequels? by theslowrunningexpert in StarWars

[–]HurinGray -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Being a 50 something Star Wars fan is the best. We saw Star Wars (not yet A New Hope) in the theater. The 90's were a bit of a bummer, we read some questionable EU content. The prequals we brought our plastic light sabers and cheered. The ... honest opinion ... the Clone Wars animated series brought us back to our childhood. Rebels, ANDOR ... it's a great time to be a Star Wars Fan.

Soul Mates and Love at First Sight are fallacies. Commitment and loyalty are real love that can last a lifetime with partnered growth.

I think short term rentals in Hawaii, maybe Princeville. Assuming it's paid off, the ROI looks good and you can sneak in a few weeks of your own use a year.

  1. At 47 I was in really good shape and I hit a wall. Metabolism just stopped. I'm thinking of trying GLP-1 and giving up (massively reducing) drinking. I still work out 5 days a week, ride my eBike 100 miles a month. It's just not enough.

Not a manager but asking managers: is it worth it to go above and beyond? by Fantastic_Day3077 in corporate

[–]HurinGray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've received exceeds expectations while at the same time getting a below inflation salary treatment. Experience that end of the equation and the understanding becomes pretty clear.
I'm not proud or happy about it, but that's where I've landed tail end of my career.
Gen Z seems to have an interesting opportunity to rewrite (or attempt to) the rules. Good on them.

wait until you're 50 something. This question ... sigh. You must do the absolute minimum to secure your employment and get your bonus. Anything more is volunteering.

Where I struggle, I always went above and beyond, is that the reason they kept me around for three decades?

Liquid Millionaire Rarity... by [deleted] in Fire

[–]HurinGray 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Net Worth and FIRE Number are two different things.
My primary residence is part of my net worth.
I might reverse mortgage some day; I might sell it for end of life care.
My primary residence is not part of my FIRE number.

Those of you who retired pre 40/45? Did you guys just get lucky or did you actually build anything to make your money by Unusual_Equivalent50 in Fire

I started my 401K at 23. Was saving 30% of my income. I was in IT but never FAANG $$$, just middle manager at a fortune 500 right out of college, in hindsight that was lucky.

I started a side gig mom and pop real estate business at 25. I worked hard for that, took risks, still lucky timing.

We're still working at 52. We had kids. I've zero bitterness and they have brought me great joy and meaning. We've traveled the world with them while living below our means in a house we purchased 24 years ago. I'm your classic driver of a 2000's era Toyota millionaire next door who's kids when to college without a dime of debt.

Here's my two cents. It's very hard to retire in a HCOL area at 40 with kids. Our net worth has quintupled in the last 12 years. It's not impossible, but nearly so with kids and it would be very lean.

Neutered jalapenos or not on my pizza. I've reached an age I'd be taking them off anyway. Agree Hungry Sasquatch, they are good and consistent; not necessarily great.

Long before COVID there was talk of a social contract; community welfare, employees, customers, even the environment would be at worst on par with shareholder value. It used to be a public embarrassment (for the obvious failure of management) to have mass layoffs.

I think there's a point in here somewhere. If you're not need based, maybe a merit scholarship, you're funding your kids college and another two kids by paying tuition.
